rzel
Didn't find any topic with the same problem so... I'm trying to start GTA IV (bought on Steam) and at some random point, the music in the character screen stops and the it begins to loop over and over again, showing me the same characters. I've waited long and nothing happens. Any clues to what I can do?

Post your system specs please AMD x2 5600+ Nvidia 9600 GT 2 GB RAM Windows XP SP3 I tried it several times and needed to close the game with task manager, I restarted my PC and closed everything I didn't need and it gave the same result. I am now going to validate my steam cache.
rzel
I know for a fact that specs aren't the cause, my friend has almost identical PC as me and his GTA runs smoothly. Though his was a DVD version, not Steam.
Gibbo3771
Well i have the exact same graphics card 9600GT, so take your smooth gameplay somewhere else mate, each and every individual cards have problems with drivers, nothing we an do about it. Also when i said i crashed the game, i terminated the proccess, dont know if that makes a diff but it gives you a nice warning before you do it lol try a full reinstall and clean the registry after you do so, reinstall everything over again, dont repair completely remove then reinstall @rzel go and play round at his house then and wait for a patch for urself, consider yourself lucky

Gibbo3771
Just wait untill you see how crapy it runs, if you get a smooth game post your FPS and start up a new topic saying what you did. I very much doubt it will run smooth but some of us have got lucky......

cntcncr
I have the same problem. Now if it gets stuck I wait until the music is finished (I assume it's done loading what it needs to by then) then alt-tab out of the game, and back in again. That has forced it onto the next bit of loading every time.
peterlustig
good idea, but i can neither tab-out, nor does ctrl-alt-del work for me, i keep stuck in the loop and have to restart my pc... kinda sucks.
arturchix
I had a lot of problems when trying to launch the game. First, Rockstar didn't bother to notify that Windows XP SP3 is required to even boot the game. I got a fatal error and was thrown out of the game with no explanation. OK, I googled and found the problem that I need SP3. Fine, I installed it. Next problem - I couldn't get past the loading screen. The music eventually stops and characters keep changing all the time. Once I did manage to get past it and now I can do it with the help of Alt+Tab Yay, I finally was able to start the game but the sight was horrifying - most of the textures were missing and Niko and other characters were floating in the air. The texture quality itself was terrible even though I changed it from low to medium. I tried to repair the installation, no difference so I'm reinstalling it at the moment. This is the first time something like that happens to me. I've played numerous resource demanding games including Crysis with some lag on medium quality but this is something new. Rockstar, you've done a very poor job and if the reistall won't solve the problems, you've lost a customer forever. My PC specs: Intel Core 2 6400 (2.13 Ghz) 1 GB RAM GeForce 7900 GS, 256 MB (all newest drivers) Windows XP Service pack
cntcncr
As an update to what I said before; the loading screen loop seemed to be solved at the same time as missing textures for me. I uninstalled Nvidia drivers and installed 180.70 beta drivers with modded .inf as per instructions on here and now it all loads as it should and graphics are fine, hud and all. It runs like treacle but that's another problem entirely. I don't think I've ever been this frustrated trying to get a game to work. Games are meant to be a relaxing distraction, not like working again in the evening.
