Heh that was fun GTAMonkey.. Nice work.

Thanks for posting the comments on the editor.. Does sound like there are some annoyances in using it. I was hoping it would be really flexible so you could create some really intricate sequences. If you were to use fraps you would lose all the cool camera angles which is what really appeals to me..

Is it possible to use one piece of footage but show the same action from multiple camera angles?

Man you can really see the difference in draw distance between the PC version and consoles - the city looks alot more alive.. Superb.

Yes, say you grab a 30 sec clip, you can slap in on over and over and each chunk repeated you go "into" and then tag markers where you want making camera pans. So different pans of same moment can happen and you can then copy those chunks. Pans can be maual and as you see you pan pan off from main character and go off to other areas and sweep in and follow etc.

You can trim the end of a section also, but I couldnt seem to trim its start point but again I realy did just go into it, think ... hmmm, right, farted around (I use Vegas 8) so had an idea, but I do need to play more.

The clips and then going into them to marker points is alot like Sony Vegas when you open a clip and add key frames basicly. Its pretty sweet for just being free with a game thats for sure. Im worried about the render time for Hi res though ... that one threw me a bit, on slomo parts it was render 1 frame say 4 seconds apart. i know this is rendering the game live then dumping the frame, not sure why they have to have full screen render when actual spitting the frames to video and not "off" to maybe speed it up a bit.

The next video I will still try some slick arty shots but with some funny punch ups next time (tomorow). Its a nice break away from the SP main game as I say if the performance gets on your nerves .. its more of a laugh.

https://tv.rockstargames.com/mytv/index/id/1655 UPDATED & FIXED 5/12/08

New video of mine : Rain Over Me

This is also to show my graphics settings now, also using the post processing which gives blur/motion blur with not much fps hit using "p" when in-game, captures in this footage. Textures high running up to 30 fps so slowly things are looking better and getting it playable.

Dont underestimate the "p" key, its not AA but its FAR better plus you get the motion blur when moving back and driving and falling/dying scene.

Still some bugs in the editor, somtimes soundtrack will loose sync and you have to exit back to SP, then back to video player to correct. In this at the end the fight with the business man should have punch sounds, but on render they are not added, again seems like a bug as it all ok in preview. Guess R* need to have a look at this also in time, but its minor compared to the main preformance overall issues.

I will get these out as high res up on vimeo too but the render is slooow in the game so will do that soonish, web is ok to watch though.

One good thing is you can capture at low res to get fps, then exit, up the graphics, go to editor and becuase its all data the playback of the sequences will be in the res you decide before render which is nice.

Also watch out if you overload you mem settings rendering in high textures (for me 2 gig in xp) it crapped out once with a mem write error, so give 100 MB leeway when rendering if you up the quality and add MB usage.

Sorry to hear that mate. So far its been pretty fluid here, I agree render to web isnt super fast, try rendering for external upload ... less than 30 seconds = 40 mins .... hehe.

Upload hasnt realy been a problem here though, maybe they went down as you were transfering, retry I only upped this in the last hour or so no problem.

Again, great thread GTAMonkey.

I was on the social club earlier and came across your rain video - very nice. Like your use of red for the fight scenes - works a treat.

Bloody awesome news about multple angles of the same scene and making copies. That is exactly what I want. I had some thoughts this morning about shooting some in car looking out footage then jumping to another camera to show an outside event from a far etc..

Sounds like it'll take some learning but once mastered it could be sensational. I imagine a patch will solve some of the technical issues as well hopefully.

You ought to blog about this if you have one mate.. Sounds like you really understand video editing so can help others get to grip with using the GTA editor.

Its realy good fun, even if people may not be a video editor nut, give it a try out its addictive because its so accessible and quick to set up and play with.

Also another tip, here the location on your PC if you rendered wmv videos :

C:\Users\(user name)\Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\Videos\rendered

This is vista location so it would be "documents and settings/user name" I guess with XP.

Download to the video editor PDF manual (from the social club site but its not obvious for the link):

https://tv.rockstargames.com/downloads/NA_L...itor_readme.pdf

Thanks for the link.

I worked all night on a vid just to have it crap out on export twice not even 1/4 of the way through.

What res did you use to export because I'm guessing I hit my cap even though my resources were supposedly in the "green".

If you have 2 gig ram (I have vista) if you render HIGH textures it will run out of recources so to export hi res than "web" you have to drop textures to MEDUIM but then crank up draw distance.

I reworked both my videos and fixed some camera bugs and changed the camera work on both vids I currently have on Social club (need to delete and replace thier but that site is having issues currently). I decided to upload HD version to Vimeo, these are new final edits just done. What you see here is how I can play pretty much 30fps and a few dips, but bear in mind I had to go medium textures to render hi res, I actualy play high textures in-game .... so here goes:

"No matter what, just keep walking"

Rain Over Me - HD Vimeo

"Just another day for Nico in Liberty City"

J-Walk - HD Vimeo

You can also download from in the desciption in vimeo the full 720p wmv files for large screen playback if you want to compare with your own game graphics levels etc.

Just trying to put some positives into the justified bad side to GTA right now, if you can get decent fps low res you can get replays, then ramp back up setting when editing, so if SP and fps is annoying try this side of it out to take your mind of things.

Ah man you were so spot on about the replay editor.. I knew I would find it interesting but my god how accessible!!!

It was pretty much the first thing I tried after installing GTA earlier and I couldnt get myself off it.. It's the most amazing GTA thing I've ever experienced..

The whole system just works so well and can be picked up in minutes.. I haven't even read the documentation yet so there is probably a lot more I can do with it but this has got me really excited.

I've just finished my first proper video, although it was really just a quick test kind of thing. I had just been messing around on the street and picked a fight with some old guy.. Well he started attacking me and then this other guy jumps in as well. Both of them hitting Niko. So I get him out of there and run to the sausage stand to get some health back.. Anyway, after that I looked over for the guy who attacked me and he was walking away.. So.. What did Niko do.. He ran acorss the street and kicked the crap out of the guy.. I then hit F2 and eagerly began editing my video.. Which I proudly present to you:

Revenge

https://tv.rockstargames.com/videos/view/id/64B2C8022E79322C

Took me some time to get it to upload. At first it kept saying 'Upload Failed' without seemingly trying to do anything.

I then couldnt input the letters b or n on the keyboard in the description.. Not sure if that is my keyboard or the game though..

Going to have some real fun with this I can feel it.. smile.gif

Well I play in Medium settings and each render attempt has failed about 1/4 of the way through. I even dropped my res down to 1024x768 and it didn't get much farther before locking up. It did seem to render faster though. My movie is about 4 minutes long and I guess there's actually no current way to render something of this duration. To make things worse, when it does crap out, I get the missing textures bug and have to install my video drivers again each time I attempt & fail to render it.

New things ive noticed with capture and editing (2 MB ram here BTW and 896 vid ram)...

When im in the editor or capturing vid I turn textures to medium and lower view distance very low. You dont need these things for capture clips because you can up them before rendering later, but when capturing at high it will either report not enough resources or stutter bad, remember its not cpturing the "video look" its capting position data etc so look itsnt an issue although car density is need as it captures car positions and you can to change that.

@smokeringhalo - whats your spec? That sounds pretty bad I have had 2 crap outs, but that was when textures were high, you have to make at leas 100MB headroom or so if you hit the roof of mem in setting then render high it will crap out for sure.

Also note that if you want to record the BLUR in the video press "G" in the preview of a clip to make sure its on, then render.

I just upped my first created rough test video called "J-WALK" details are with the video.

WATCH HERE (on social club).

Well a couple of things, when i rendered this to 720DPI for higher res to place elsewhere (say youtube) it renders frame by frame full screen and took, wait for it ... 40 mins ..... WTF!? LOL.

Anyway when I then exported for "web" for social club it took about 8 mins to render, seems to take longer on slow-mo sections it seemed to me.

The editor:

Couple of things that bug me a bit.

1. Fade transitions cant be set to a certain contollable length just drag and drop, plus they cant be rendered in real time on after so no preview with fades.

2. When you set a camera marker and then set it to "blend" movement which means it key-frames to the next marker to make a pan shot and you set the time to slower (slo mo) the whole length of the timeline squashes so the markers become bunched and hard to move which is annoying (no zoom out)

3. You will see if you use handycam shake effect and then the same on the following marker the shake position isnt fluent so it jumps, you will notice in this when shakey cam changes shot it has an inital "jump" which I assume can be avoided if you make the following marker normal (not 2 markers in a row set to hany cam effect).

4. Couldnt seem to move the text any place other than in the center, correct me if you find it but I just couldnt see it.

5. If you want tight keyframing to sync with vid (which Itried with this test vid) its hard as playing or "scrubbing" wont play audio at the same time so theres some guess work when kicking markers around. Also starting play half way in the time line can cause daly on music so you have to start at zero to kickin in touch.

6. If you kick a marker or tow out of place I couldt find an "undo" .. so its a fiddle to put them back in place (unless i missed it)

7. When I played back the full res (40 min render LOL version) playback messed up the audio codec like a codec corruption (when playing back inside the game from video editor section), when i flipped back to SP game this was all effected too so had to restart, deffo some kind of bug me thinks.

Having said that it does the job for fun cut ups, if you want anything much tighter then its a fraps job and external editor realy, but its fun to mess with when you get pissed off with performance on SP biggrin.gif You will notice the camera jump on changes, still need to fix that probably as I say the shakey cam thing.

Also, remember to render for "web" to then be able to see it in the upload list for Social Club.

PS - ref render times etc I have athlon 64 x2 6000+ 3ghz CPU.

This is the first thing ive done with it so thats not much practice, oh and the music is in-game from Roy Ayres radio channel.

Dont get it whats so special with your vids. Ok, the moments when the vid turns into red look cool.

If you realy want to watch a good vid on R*s social club click this =>

(the escalade of death/GTA IV PC Cadillac of Death). This is livefootage from a MP-session.

By the way your avatar in the social club looks like sh*t.

How PATHETIC the avatar comment, jesus what are you 12?

Dont get it whats so special with your vids.

Nor do I, but the thread isnt ALL about the vid and how good you are.

This isnt an ego battle of "mines better than yours" grow up, I post becuase no ones reporting issues back to HELP others about the editor itself, my videos are the first ive EVER made in the game and have been created to help compare with people resolution and games settings and tests.

Troll off to school somewhere else, or maybe actualy "help" others.

BTW your looking for ingame action like that vid link (which is great for what is it), I like arty based short cinematics, theres room for all if you dont like it, move on. If you want blood and guts and crazy mad action hero scenes, go make some or watch those doing that.

Also the intial vidz on social club need replacement as they have been change, the vimeo ones are the fixed ones.

+1..

Comments like the previous poster gave aren't worth the energy of replying to.

Your vids are spot on mate and the value your adding to the forum is priceless for us who are getting into the editor and actually learning to use it.

This is the inherent problem with the forums here.. Many people just want to be negative, slag off other people at the smallest oppourtunity and try and get one up on everyone else..

Much of this problem I predict is based on the teenage contingent (although I know not all young players on here are brain dead, just a fair proportion)..

I know what your saying, id just like to point out im not a "kid" here and also im not posting (or interested) to get browney points, or think my videos are "special" I just like to do things right no matter what with vidz an uploading them whether thay are simple or epics, and also help report back things too.

I just go by the fact if other dont, do it yourself and keep your own standards eh biggrin.gif

PS - its all been re-upped to social club with corrected final edits, put things tidy in the first post again with links etc.

Also please if you have issues and bugs, or good links please post them, this isnt a one man show here ... anything you got, post here.

Rather than fly into loads of action scenes i take more joy in getting some simple captures and try to make a theme to them sync to music, thats just what I like to do. rest assured bigger action will come, I have an idea called "road kill" and that wont be pretty smile.gif

I would never have labelled you as a 'kid' GTAMonkey - all of your posts I've read have been balanced, informative and mature..

I personally really like your videos - that is the kind of style I am toying with as well.. I'm doing quite a few fight scenes at the moment but mainly because that's what I'm doing in game and then grabbing the clip to edit.

My ultimate goal to work towards creating a hollywood style trailer, complete with a voice-over. This is going to be recorded by me so has the potential to be epic or sound bloody awful..lol.

My main focus is in recreating legitimate film techniques so that my movies look more real. That's going to take a lot of experiementation to master the controls in the editor. I like how you've used the sweep around camera (or whatever it's called).. That is something I've not tried yet but looks like it will work really well in a lot of videos.

Artistic is good.. It sets the video apart from the numerous straight deathmatch and shooting videos that the majority will probably create.

The editor has so much potential it's scary.. I can't wait to replay the single player in the PC version and find new locations and oppourtunities to create some fantastic material.

Man oh man, I just went outside (in the game) and it was full raining which is ok on my rig.

So I turned on video capture option, walked out and walked along the road to get some street in rain shot, when I press f2 it brought my system to a 1 frame per 5 second nightmare and never recovered and then bombed out the game LOL.

Top tip when its raining and you capture - lower setting before hand even textures. Also that game save I have means when I walk out its raining so another tip is if you weather is what you like save to a different slot and make note of it is, then you can load an then know what weather is. For me this game save slot wont be overwitten becuase I know it gives me rain when I go out.

Thanks for comments, yes thers alot of "free" camera in mine that standard and the use of "merge" between targets using in&out to smooth motion of camera, im very much into timing and pace and camera work.

Hopefully a mod might come that runs over GTA so we can switch weather cycle like the one in GTA SA.

Right, merge is the function I need to look at then.. Superb.. Will give that a go tonight when I'm editing my amusing parkour inspired movie.

Great tip on saving the conditions you like to film in .. Brilliant idea.. Same with time of the day maybe.. I've been thinking that sometimes it will be necessary to 'reshoot' some scenes in a video to add stuff before and after a clip you've edited. Would be good to be able to quickly load up the same kind of time frame as the original movie so things match up better..

Think I found a bug, when you capture clips footage with helis, "sometimes" the main rotor is stationary when its flying.

Im hooked on the video maker at the moment more than the main game, ive had it since tuesday and only got to my 3rd mission since then, just tweaking and editor so far cool.gifinlove.gif .

The things Id like to see enhanced (not holding my breath though)

1. Ability to nudge first clip in movie form 0 over to where you want to add text and just black background, workaround is get any clip, shorten it for length you need and zoom into anything to make screen blank then ad text to this as the blank background.

2. Ability to "trim" music both at start and end point so you can have more than one track in a sequence, so far all I can se is one track only and one length.

3. Ability to position text than just centered only.

4. Ability to merge movies, so if you have 2x 2 min sequences un-rendered it treats them like clips so you can slot them together to daisy chain a sequence, that way you can switch music per sequence.

5. Ablility to use transition fades on text

6. Ability to set custom length in seconds of a transition

Currently im making a car chase scene with hollywood style camera work, its a compilation of different chases and ped accidents also devil.gif

Something I noticed last night (not sure if this is normal so let me know if it is)

In the physical manual :

Depending on how data intensive things are in the world at that time, the clip should be about 30-40 seconds long

In the main editor pdf manual:

The game will capture 30 to 40 second longClips, depending on your game settings and computer specs

This is a pic after taking a clip in the full wind and rain and alot of traffic (behind the camer view in this pic) when my system nearly died on me in the process (it did bomb out but still manages to save the clip fine)

Check the full time of the clip top right in dark grey:

@Slingshot - I just checked your vid, all good practice, like the walk away after a munch moment.

LOL ... I eat a hot dog, I walk across the road and kick the sh*t out of a stranger ... a pure GTA vid devil.gif

Check my first video if you wish :]

I am thinking about making feature-length movie on multiplayer. Police chases are amazing....

(I aplologize if this is not right topic, not have much time really)

No mate please post, I started this in hope that people might post to report findings and feedback so all welcome in this dept.

Like the video, one thing to note though when your on slo mo marker you can also switch voice to 0 so you dont get all slow down voices but just slow effects audio/video ... this is of course you indented that to be in icon14.gif

I notice rockstar are now viewing the forum and looking for editor updates so I was trying also to collate it in one place, i think some people mistook this thread as a "look at me and my video only" show, which it isnt at all.

LMFAO..

This is the problem with my vid, it does have a story but I couldnt show it.. Niko had just been attacked by two guys - the guy who he beats up in my vid was one of them.. Niko escaped, grabbed a hotdog then saw the guy walking off.. So he ran in and made sure the guy showed some respect.. lol..

Again, just a silly little test but was fun playing with the angles etc..

Here is my latest vid.. A better story here and more accomplished I feel although still very much a test video. Let me know what you think:

Don't look down

Playing with the video editor and swing glitch. I recommend clicking the video and playing in HD smile.gif

It's a neat feature, but the way you record clips kinda sucks. You have NO IDEA how long the clip will be, some clips i've saved have been like 40 seconds, some under 2 seconds.

Just a small test of the editor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5z88Tyeu6uU&fmt=22
