EDIT: Yay, I fixed it. No more lockups, and uninstalling the old .net frameworks was also stupid. You can't just uninstall the 2.0 framework, you have to be a f*cking engineer to remove the old one. I guess that's why even microsoft opted to just leave the old version there.

please share how the way you fix the problems.. thanks

i'm sorry for my bad english..

There are details in the FAQ on how to remove and reinstall .net framework.

OK guys I think i've got a solution. At least one that worked for me and this was after many hours of trolling through these very message boards as well as many others. And to all of the hatefull a-holes who say that everyone here who is having trouble are just a bunch of idiot nubies and to the others who say "Why don't you just get a new game instead of wasting your lives trying to make this one work", I say to the former: "F-Off" and to the latter: "It's a GTA thing and obviously you'll never understand..." With that being said here is what worked for me, and actually I got a useful trick off a YouTube vid that addresses this very problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRnFp1ePMYw

The problem is definitely with the launching of the "Social Club" program so, just like the other posts here told me to do, I did go through the motions of installing the latest drivers for my Nvidia card of course, I did turn off the other .Net programs that were running and install the 3.5 Net update and then found another Social club update from Rockstar here:http://www.rockstargames.com/support/IV/PC/RSGSC/index.html.

Hell, before this I even tried to re-install my Vista Ultimate which I found out I couldn't do (just update or repair it which kinda sucks)!

The thing that seems to work which I got off that vid was this: Right click your Rockstar Social Club icon, select Open File location, then into the 1_0_0_0 or 1_1_3_0 update folder (If you updated you should have the latter of those two) then run the RGSC executable and the Lollipop girl screen should pop up for you and you can click Play from there. And It worked for me!! After I did that once however, I didn't get the option of "Open File Location" when I right clicked the main icon again, so I had to go into Programs, Rockstar Games, Rockstar Social Club,1_1_3_0 to find that program again but it still worked!

I feel I had to repay all of those who have contributed here by taking some time to retell how I got the damn thing running. Mind you this whole thing has pissed me off and you shouldn't have to go trhough all of these f-cking hoops to play a game, but when I get my mind to do something I hold on like a fricken bulldog untill I figure it out. I hope this helps...

Guys, 99% of RGSC issues are tied to a faulty .net installation. Some facts for you

* 3.5 net installation is NOT MANDATORY. RGSC will work with PROPERLY installed 3.0 as well

* there is a PROPER way to have .net installed and IMPROPER one. If you wonder why that is, talk to MS.

* if you would like to know the difference between the above mentioned two, look in the FAQ, there it has been detailed how to PROPERLY install .net framework

  1.  For Vista and Windows 7, both 32 and 64 bit users this should not be an issue as those OS'es come bundled with the atrocity MS likes to call dot net framework, 3.0 version at that.

  2. If you do have issues, you can try installing the 3.0 package that can be found in the redistributables folder on the game disk or download the 3.5SP1 version from here which contains all in one package - both 32 bit and 64 bit versions.

  3. If you use XP then you probably installed the framework over and over again, with loads of updates, service packs and whatnot. This of course can cause problems.

  4. firstly remove all the present packages via "add or Remove programs". Reboot.

  5. Now get this nice little tool from here. Run it and reboot once again, just to be on the safe side.

  6. For 32 bit and 64 bit edition 2003 XP get the 1.1 version from here. If you have a previous 64 bit XP version, according to this .net framework 1.1 is NOT supported. I'm not sure as to what you should do in this situation.

  7. After the installation has finished, restart your machine. Now get the 1.1 SP1 package from here, install it and restart once again. This package is valid for both 32 and 64 bit systems.

  8. Finally, get the 3.5SP1 package from here, install it and ... what? ... yes, restart. This is the full package, 32 and 64 bit.

  9. If all else fails and RGSC prevents you from playing the game, you can try to reinstall the OS (tutorial here) in hope that this issue will then be gone OR get xliveless (more information about this here) which will disable RGSC all together, but it will also kill our MP. However, you 'll be able to play SP.

*sigh* Makes me feel old, but I remember the day when people used to write software without the assistance of the .NET framework, Visual C++ 2005, etc. And you know what? It was usually more reliable and optomized very well.

It seems with all these extra tools to help programmers, it might make their lives easier but their programming sure seems to get sloppier. In theory it should have done the opposite: make programmers' software better because they had more time to work on things since they didn't have to write code from scratch sarcasm.gif

Sorry to bump this thread but I've had this game for a while now and I've had it uninstalled until an offical fix from Rockstar is released because I have tried absolutely everything and gone through hours of frustration trying to get this to work.

So I just wanted to know if any official fix has been released or even a date for an official release? Otherwise I may as well return the game because at the moment it has just been a waste of time and money.

Guys, is this thread for troubleshooting or for whining?! If you need help with a certain problem DESCRIBE THE FEKKING ISSUE IN DETAIL and someone might help. Also, reading doesn't (contrary to what most believe) cause brain cancer, there is a FAQ as there are loads of RGSC issue threads that might contain fixes for your problems.

99% of RGSC issues are related to faulty .net or unsuccessful RGSC installations.

I found the solution to my problem on a website completely unrelate to the game but it did solve my problem. I am running Windows XP byt he way so I don't know if this would apply to Vista users.

Solution

The solution is just a couple posts down from the original post. A crucial step I missed was cleaning up after the .NET uninstalls with a clean up program. I uninstalled all my .NET programs, ran the clean up application and re-installed the programs the post said to and from that point my game is working 100%.

You know what, I have only just installed GTA IV and have this issue, it won't even let me play offline. Why do Rockstart INSIST on giving me a piece of software I may not even use? Why are we forced to install it?

I have paid for the game and it should work without me having to patch it up or anything to start with - I did not download it, I boutgh it over the counter.

oh i see many people still havent figured out a way to make it work

if you have the same specs like i do i mean the hardware spec

windows XP professional sp3 :-

follow my easy steps

1:= goto gta iv cd

find RGSC

goto redistributable folder

for 32bit users install dotnetfx3

for 64 bit user install dotnetfx3_x64

those are the steps that might help now proceed for the second part if that didnt work for u

the second part is wright below this

2nd part

try using a .net cleaner the one i used heres the link

http://cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.skydrive.live....ip?sa=870260206

http://cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.skydrive.live....ip?sa=870260206

its the same link

now use it and clean all .nets

now u will have to restart or reboot ur computer

after u do that install .netframework 1.1

be sure to download it or if u have it then its good for you

u install 1.1 and u will have to restart ur PC

then u just have to do the part 1 steps again

HOPE THIS WORKS

Thank You for people who tried it

Hey I finally got this working !

Here's what you've got to do:

1) Download the 1.0.7.0 update patch from here or from here (or you can google it) and install it (double click UpdateTitle.exe)

Try running the game now. If it works you can skip the following steps. If not this is what you've got to do:

4) Copy the files that you extracted into the root folder where you uninstalled the game (Replace the old files when you are asked to)

5) Launch the game with LaunchGTAIV.exe

6) Enjoy !

This will make the game run without RGSC (the update will even uninstall it) and XLive.

It worked for me and I'm sure it will work for you too.

PS: Even if this fix means using a crack that is supposed to be illegal it doesn't matter for me. I bought the game and I struggled for hours to make it work. This is the only way i could play it so I don't care if i have to use a crack. I bloody bought the game !

You shouldn't post crack links, it's very much against forum rules for obvious reasons.

It's not a crack link. It's a link to an archive uploaded to another website that can contain anything. It's perfectly legal.

And in the archive is an executable that's been modified so that the game can be played by those who get that bloody error.

It's your choice, remove it or/and ban me, it's not like i really care. All i wanted to do is help. The game works fine for me now, so whatever.

But the fix that you have posted contains the Razor1911 crack which is against the forum rules. I suggest you remove that immediately before you get warned.

First off, wrong section, you want the Vice City Troubleshooting section over here. This one is for GTA IV. But, the Rockstar Folder is in the Install directory-by default it is C:/Program files/Rockstar Games/GTA Vice city.
