RGSC has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Here guys...try this...for some it worked...but for other's INCLUDING ME it didn't work sad.gif ....

After lots of trial and error, I think i've finally narrowed down the cause of at least one of the RGSC startup errors, which was happening to me (and to others too).

This error was either:

- RGSC does not start, shows nothing.

- Windows shows "RGSC has encountered a problem and needs to close" before starting RGSC (this is not the same error as RGSC "The application has encountered a fatal error...", that error happens after RGSC starts succesfully)

Here's a post with another user having the problem:

Ok, to the solution:

1 - Uninstall all the .NET framework runtimes, from last version to first (for example, I did 3.5 first, then 3.0, then 2.0. I don't know if this really matters, but to be sure, do it this way) You may not have all the versions installed. If you have .NET 1.0 and/or 1.1, it's not necessary to uninstall it. People using Vista cannot uninstall .NET 2.0 and 3.0, but it's ok.

1a - Vista Only: Go to the services console ( start - run - and type "services.msc"), look for "Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN x64 and/or x86". right click on them, stop them, then on properties set them to "disabled".

2 - Install .NET framework 3.5 SP1

2a - XP Only: Right after installing it, go to the services console ( start - run - and type "services.msc"), look for the ".NET Runtime Optimization Service", right click on it, stop it, then on properties set it to "disabled".

3 - Launch RGSC.

This error also makes the new Games For Windows Client (the one that you can launch from windows without being in a game) crash on startup, so if you get that problem too this should solve it.

Hope u make it work :<

I'm the author of the solution copacu posted, original thread here:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/show...d.php?p=8607223

I've seen mixed results, for me it worked perfectly, I've been playing with no more problems for several days now... I've XP with SP3.

Other ppl could also got it to work this way.... others... didn't.

I'm curious about what OS the ppl that doesn't get it to work with this workaround have. I've a rough idea of what the problem actually is, and maybe we can get it solved completely.

PS: Thanks Rockstar Support for NEVER having replied to my mail, sent last week... I've had to fix it by myself, so be assured that if you launch another title for PC, I'm sure as hell I won't be buying it.

I don't have this folder either, the folder name looks like a version number, is there an update available for social club?

i cant find social club for download anywhere, also no updates or patches. Does social club update itself upon starting it? if it does we're going to need this update available for download somewhere outside of social club since we cant start it to begin with.

Could you upload your social club files somewhere? if its allowed ofcourse otherwise we're going to have to wait for rockstars

I have XP SP3 and FRAMEWORK 3.5 SP1 but it still won't work :| just noticed a strange thing though, when I went into the services window, the FRAMEWORK is called ".NET Runtime Optimization Service v2.0.50727_X86" Which is weird, considering the version written there.

Can someone try unplugging their ethernet cable, then trying to run the Rockstar Games Social Club application to see what happens?

I've unplugged my ethernet cable and rgsc worked! Without an internet connection it seems to run in offline mode. If I connect to online mode, the error occurs again.

At least for me.., but I'm unable to save etc. so this solution isn't really helpful. Beside that, the ingame performance is terribly bad and my pc isn't that worse. I hope the patch will fix the performance.

my system:

vista 32bit home premium, 3.5 .net

nvidia 8800gtx

intel e6300

2048mb

I've just received the 1_1_1_0 version from a friend of mine who was the game up and running, but it does no good, just the same old problem. I have a strong feeling it has something to do with our FRAMEWORK installation. something doesn't fit... but what the F could it be? confused.gif

OH, AND, the FRAMEWORK provided in the 1st DVD, in the middle of the install it says "PerformanceCounterInstaller has encountered a problem and needs to be closed." But then just continues and says it finished "successfully". But with the 3.5SP1 it just goes along fine with no errors at all, but when i tried running the RGSC.exe through the debugger, it gave me a list of errors, same ones that were mentioned in this topic: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=380680

As you can see, some of them included some error with the class "Performance Counter", could it be that some components don't get installed well from the FRAMEWORK for some reason? Any ideas\theories?

"RGSC has encountered a problem & need to be close".

It happen because the compatibility of GTA IV (Rockstar

Game Social Club) didn't match with WINDOWS compatibility.

WINDOWS still recognize GTA IV files are like the other game

which is still run under WINDOWS 95.

BUT GTA IV (Rockstar Game Social Club) have a high

compatibility because the basic type of the game is online which

is run under compatibility WINDOWS 2000.

That is the main problem why the GTA IV's picture in the game

SOLUTION :

after turn on your computer:

1. Click start menu -- rockstar games -- GTA IV -- GTA IV launcher

-- right click -- properties -- find target -- compatibility

-- change to WINDOWS 2000.

2. Enter your program files -- rockstar games -- GTA IV folder

-- change the compatibility of every file bellow this to

windows 2000.

-launchGTAIV.exe

-GTAIVbrowser

-GTAIV.exe

-GTAIV revoke license

Close all windows.

3. click start menu -- rockstar games -- rockstar games social

club -- right click -- properties -- find target -- compatibility

-- compatibility mode check -- run change to WINDOWS 95 &

disable the check mark.

4. Do the same with file ROCKSTAR launcher in your

program files -- rockstar games -- rockstar games social

club -- 1_0_0_0 folder.

5. Start GTA IV with double click Rockstar Games Social Club

launcher.

6. After launch, GTAIV Rockstar Social Club message will appear .

CHOOSE SKIPLOGIN

7. PLAY !! Message "You are not currently logged into social club"

appear . CLICK OK.

8. QUIT GAME

9. click start menu -- rockstar games -- rockstar games social

club -- right click -- properties -- find target -- compatibility

-- compatibility mode check -- run change to WINDOWS 2000 &

on the check mark.

10. Do the same with file ROCKSTAR launcher in your

program files -- rockstar games -- rockstar games social

club -- 1_0_0_0 folder -- run change to WINDOWS 2000 &

on the check mark.

11. Start GTA IV with double click Rockstar Games Social Club

launcher.

12. PLAY !!

13. Message "You are not currently logged into social club"

appear . CLICK OK.

14. ENJOY THE GAME WITHOUT DRUNKEN PICTURE!!!

THANKS.

well, now nothing happens at all when I try to launch RGSC. I guess that's some progress. But that's only when I'm in compatibility mode with win 95 or 98. (and yes, I tried to disable it as written. but still comes the same error) When I try with Win NT, after a few error windows, it shows in the Task Manager Process tab that RGSC is running. Though I can't get any response from it. So the problem remains the same. Any more ideas?

Your explanation doesn't make any sense at all...

Even more, enabling Windows 2000 or another compatibility mode on RGSC will prevent it from launching correctly.

Did you uninstall service pack 3 and the windows update?

You may also need to remove the 'run in compatibility with windows 2000' that may be on your RGSC Launcher.exe

it's a real pain in the ass to see people who legally purchased the game getting this treatment while we have crackers out there laughing at us for wasting our money...

haha, no need to be racist... lol.gif

I just posted a big bloated post (to go with the big bloated game.. no really I just can't be concise) about how I solved this.

I don't really think this will be widely useful, but just in case..

My dot net install was screwed up. Big time. I couldn't uninstall it, I couldn't install it again. So I had to get the cleanup utility:

http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools/dotne...leanup_tool.zip

That is basically a brute force uninstaller, it strips out all dot net versions (one option is to get them all, anyway). Then I reinstalled 3.5sp1 (which includes all other versions as well, at least in theory, testing suggests I don't have 2.0).

The first time I did this the whole thing worked. But I went back to a system restore point to try to undo what I'd done to see if I could make it work without the drastic brute force step. And it never worked again.

However I CAN run the main RGSC.exe file now, located in the version number directory. That works, and it allows the game to work. Both multi and single player.

Basically, I think that however they coded this social club thing, it seems highly susceptible to a possible problem with dot net. As for dot net, I dunno, I found too many instances of people having similar problems, it seems prone to corrupted installs. Together we have ourselves a big problem.

I know I have other things that use dot net, they failed after I used the cleanup tool, but they were working before (and are again now). It's as if only part of dot net is screwed up. And it appears to be the part that Rockstar used.

As one more hint, if anyone else is having the problem where the dot net 3.5sp1 install file keeps failing on them, try to get the "full package" version that's available part way down the main 3.5sp1 download page here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

Good luck.

Well, unfortunately for me, the BFU for .net wouldn't get everything, it would give me an error toward the end and, although it wasn't in add/remove anymore, there must have been some of it left. Enough that, when I attempted to use RGSC again my computer thought long and hard, before giving me the RGSC error. Thanks for the info though, hopefully it will help others.

Same problem here. Tried everything except only one last thing. Formatting HD and fresh install of XP.

You don't have to install SP3 on your win nor .NET 3.5 to run RGSC (although you need it for a game). I tried it on my other PC but this is a very poor configuration. It has an old XP (SP2) and I had .NET 1.1 or 2.0. Installation of RGSC went without problems and everything works fine (not the game just this Social thing). But on the another PC (new configuration) the problem is still there no matter what I tried. I even suspect that this problem has some other origin that .NET Framework.

Did anybody that has this problem tried to format HD and use clean installation of Win?

For some reasons I had to format a few days ago. Yes, I checked if the RGSC works after this, but it didn't.

Thanks for info. I just dag out an old HD (40gb). I will setup clean XP install with only basic drivers and try to run RGSC. I simply cannot believe that we have a conflict with some 1Mb application. It cannot be hardware related! Another thing, I just noticed the only difference between my PC that can run and the one that cannot (when I check Add/remove program) is this MS sh*t "User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack".

Well this method actually worked for me! Fresh installation of XP on formatted drive is by far the only solution for this problem with RGSC. It works normally. So problem is some kind of anoying software conflict and I just can't find the cause!

I will postpone playing of GTA 4, so many other great games are around!

Found a solution for me for this problem: Social club usealy starts automaticly, if you disable this and you start it each time manualy, the problem is fixed for me biggrin.gif
