dr.whiz
just to make things clear, if you're using steam i have no idea how to send command line parameters to the game. by creating a shortcut and adding that fancy path line, all you're doing is to create a link. you would actually need to launch the game by clicking that link and not by launching it from steam. even if you are doing that, i don't know how steam works if it in some super hi-tek way reroutes the executable call to steam which calls the executable from steam and thereby bypassing the shortcut. i don't know. but someone else certainly does know how this works. if you're running a retail version, i really cant see why this wouldn't work. just gotta wait for someone else to get in here and solve it for you. dr.whiz
I have the steam version and was able to find the LaunchGTAIV.exe and created a shortcut. In the properties of the shortcut, in the target field it should look like this, no?: "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\grand theft auto iv\GTAIV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" -norestrictions So long as I'm not signed into the Rockstar Social Club (as it re-signed me in the first time I tried this) the game will load with out error. However, nothing's changed and I cannot go above the auto settings. Funky ass steam. Not sure about this. I remember way back trying to add command lines to CoD: UO and couldn't for some reason. Even asked support about it and they gave me nothing. The thing with steam is that it runs it's own command through it's exe first then hit's your games exe. Not sure how it's coded, but it just sucks. :'( yeah it seems all apps are launched using steam.exe and some command line parameters indicating what game etc. you can google how to add command line parameters to steam apps..im sure you'll end up having to create a bat file to do some one line of code. dr.whiz
i bet it's just something silly like a misspelled word. the fact that a posse of monkeys from toronto coded this game shouldn't affect the standard of being able to send command line parameters to the executable. jinvl34
NO! i have used this command on steam games befor.. this is bullsh*t.. i think you need to create a video on how to do it.. IF ANYONE READS THIS AND HAS STEAM POST A VIDEO ON HOW TO MAKE IT WORK OR SCREENSHOTS!! I DIDNT BUY THIS GAME TO GET MY GRAPHICS RIPPED OFF! I HAVE BETTER SPECS THEN IT SAYS I CAN RUN ITS BULLsh*t! I WILL BE HAPPY TO COMPLAIN TO GTA IV AND GET A REFUND!
dr.whiz
one thing that is worth trying if you have steam is to place the -norestrictions parameter INSIDE the quotation of the path. as in for instance: "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\grand theft auto iv\GTAIV\LaunchGTAIV.exe -norestrictions" (in target path text box of LaunchGTAIV.exe shortcut that you would manually have to create). then try double clicking this shourtcut to see if it works. RMSe17
This is what it should look like.... "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" -norestrictions This -norestrictions switch does not work. I tried entering it into the shortcut, I also tried running LaunchGTAIV.exe -norestrictions from cmd.exe. The game starts just fine, but I still can not get the Texture to unlock anything above Medium. I also tried gtaiv.exe -norestrictions and that did not work either. V:\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV>gtaiv.exe -norestrictions V:\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV>LaunchGTAIV.exe -norestrictions Nop.. didn't work. This is from the Retail 2xDVD set. Windows XP SP3 C2D E6600 @ 3.5GHz GeForce 8800GTS 512 thats messed up! so i guess there might be a f*ck up on rockstar after all when it comes to taking advantage of norestrictions on certain graphic cards or something. whatever it is it doesn't really surprise me. however, since it's still working for some people, it would be good to know how to work it in steam for those people. dr.whiz
also you could try to start it from the command prompt if you got steam. then obviously with no quotes whatsoever.

NYHoustonman
Not working for me either. I think it's because, when I first run LaunchGTAIV.exe (retail copy), it instead runs the Rockstar community software thing, when then runs LaunchGTAIV.exe again... Only without any extra commands. /shrug
Boostaa
Works fine for me the way Dr.Whiz described it. Using the retail copy on vista 64. Don't worry, you're not missing much. I have an e8500 and a 4870 1gb card, to get it playable i need to run it with draw distance at 30 and details at 20. IF i max it out (like i should be able to if rockstar didn't release a sh*tty game) then it crashes constantly anyway. This screenshot i took last night is PROOF that it works-
Smiler-Online
I have it working and this is my exact line (if your a 32bit user then remove the (x86) by the \program files\ part of the line) *NOTE* I DONT HAVE THE 'S' ON THE END AND IT WORKS FOR ME!!! (as long as I launch it from the modified shortcut - if you use any other shortcuts, then you will need to modify them too!) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" -NoRestriction (MAKE SURE YOU COPY AND PASTE THE WHOLE LINE INCLUDING THE "" PARTS, ALTHOUGH AGAIN, IF YOUR USING A 32BIT OS THEN REMOVE THE (X86) PART) (I'm running on Vista x64 by the way... I thought I'd add that just incase it may be the OS causing you all the problem...) Edited December 3, 2008 by smiler_16

Warrior7
It's easy... go to your Rockstar directory.... Then create a shortcut of GTAIVLAUNCHER.exe (or something similar xD) Then add to that shorcut (clicking right button) and add to destination (or synonim xD) -norestriction (YOu must leave a GAP between " and the -command. You must load the game from there. I hope you've understand me

camdean
I have retail version, Vista64 and I can't get this working at all, for some reason it is only giving me 1GB of ram, when I have 2GB on my GFX card, so enabling this command line will help me get the most out of my specs. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" -norestriction I tried the -nomemrestrict as well with no luck and I tried running as administrator with no luck. Arggh bloody arggh lol And where do I find my screenshots ?
GTAMonkey2012
Just posted this in my thread HERE heres some things to try : Here what to try (if you have vista 32) ... 1.Create a shortcut from the rockstars main folder of the exe called "LaunchGTAIV.exe" 2. Open with "properties" on desktop of that shorcut and in the target add the following additions: "E:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" -norestrictions -DX9 /high -norestrictions = lets the game not restrict your settings, this wont do anything for FPS or performance as-is and is just helpfull when testing, some say it doesnt work for them (they still get restrictions) but again this is all about my own experience with my rig and it does work for me. -DX9 - Runs the game in Driect X 9 mode under vista, I do know that this actualy may help things as I have tried this with Crysis Warhead and it was more stable, so those saying "Install XP vista is crap" .. if you have vista and want to try it under DX9 this is it. /high - Runs the game under vista at highest priority, gives mem and cpu access to this over all other processes. -DX9 & /high have made it so I dont get stutters it runs, before I had same fps without these flags but having to set textures to medium (yuck) ... so I know for a fact this has helped and made a difference. For those with xp still try "/high" even if your in DX9 by default and give it a go.
