I have the same CPU as you (except mines the Black Edition) and get the same FPS. But the game runs smooth so I'm not worried about it. The only thing you can do if you want more FPS is upgrade to a quad core. Upgrading anything else won't make a difference. I even OC'd my CPU to 3.1 GHZ and and it didn't seem to make a difference. Oh ,and I have the resolution at 1280x1024. Interesting that you get the same FPS at 1024x768 as I do it the higher resolution. That's the only setting that makes a significant difference for me. Are you trying to torture us with the blue text on blue background? Edited January 26, 2009 by heat84
fran123456
Why gta iv won't save clip recording : off? Also, defintion and vsync in the game are different than the options in the benchmark. Any solution?
heat84
Why gta iv won't save clip recording : off? Any solution? The 2nd patch fixes that. It did for me at least. If you've installed the 2nd patch, you can now access the Game menu where the Clip capture setting is from the main menu when you first start the game. I set it to off there and its been off ever since.
Lioshenka
Vehicle DensityVehicle density scales the traffic density of the traffic in the game. It has no effect on the mission vehicles or difficultly of the game, but can have a significant impact on CPU performance What a load of crap, everyone knows that having 10 cars blocking your way can make you fail the mission while 1 car wouldn't cause that problem. Also, having it set to "high" will make game almost unplayable.

cshmech
Thanks for this, I know what settings to put more and what to less AAaalright.. Let me get this straight.. My PC: Dual Core (2.8*2)Ghz RAM: 2GB (thats the max. allowed in my motherboard) Video Card: 8600GS 512 MB If u really know what setings to put in each option... please post it here.. I tried literally everything, and my FPS is real low...

heat84
You have the same GPU I had and about the same FPS I had with it. I upgraded to the 9800GT 1 GB and get around 20 FPS most of the time but 30-60 indoors and other areas where there's less stuff to be rendered, which is the best your gonna get with a dual core CPU. You need to upgrade your GPU. The 8400GS would be sufficient to play any other modern game, but since GTAIV is future present proof, you'll need a better card. I think the amount of RAM it has is more important than the other specs. That could be the reason for the low FPS with the 8400GS as it has only 256MB (512MB with Turbocache). If your motherboard is so old that it only supports 2GB, you'll probably need a new motherboard. Is your 8400 GS in an AGP slot? A motherboard that supports a dual core processor but only 2GB of RAM? That doesn't sound right. But its Intel and I'm an AMD user, so who knows. I assume the benchmark is incorrectly reporting your CPU. I have only one PCI e slot.. And this 8600GS is in this slot only... My CPU is Compaq Presario SR1933IL I looked in the company's website and found this is the max. upgradation possible.. Can u suggest anyother way?
heat84
The only thing you can do is upgrade the GPU. Everything else is sufficient. Since you have a Pci-e slot you can use any card including Pcie-2.0's. That 2GB system RAM limit threw me off which is why I thought your motherboard had AGP instead if Pci-e. I was just checking your PC"s specs page and there's an AMD version that has a 4GB limit, but an older single core CPU. That's weird, but then again so is Compaq. Are you sure your GPU is an 8600GS? It says 8400GS on the benchmark. Not that it makes much of a difference.
cshmech
yep.. its 8400.. Can i get another PCI video card and set them to work together? Is there anyway to do it? Cuz, i bought this card only for this game.. Cant throw away like that.. Else, i have an extra 512MB RAM, When i plug it in, the system doesnt recognise it at all.... Do u think it will help improve the games performance by any means?
anus
If you already have 2GB, get another 2GB stick of the exact brand and model. 4GB and more is best for playing IV. The 8400GS is crap and is not a card to play IV with. Get atleast a 8600GT if you want to play IV well. I have one and it didn't cost much at all here and I can get FPS in the mid 20s with decent settings.

anus
If 2GB is the maximum that your motherboard supports, anything over that won't be detected. That's why that 512MB stick of yours isn't being recognized by the motherboard. But you still can upgrade the graphics card. If you can tell us how much you can spend, we can look into getting a good card. But if you bought this card just for IV, you made bad decision because the 8400GS is NOT a gaming card. Best option would be to sell the card and put in the extra cash and get an actual gaming card.

anus
If you can increase your budget a little bit, you can get this XFX 8600GT 512MB DDR3. Of course you can get a DDR2 version for your budget, but DDR3 is so much faster.
cshmech
mine is DDR2 RAM.. not DDR3 RAM This is what u call increasing a little bit?
anus
No. I mean the video card's memory. There are 8600GTs with DDR2 memory and DDR3 memory, I linked to a card with DDR3 memory which is faster than a DDR2 one. By increase, I meant increase your budget as the card I linked shoots past your budget.

The big question im asking is, mine is suitable only for DDR2 RAM... Will a DDR3 Video Card suit my motherboard? You're confusing system RAM with video card RAM. The newest graphics cards have at least DDR3 RAM on them. You don't need to worry about your motherboard handling it because it doesn't handle it, the graphics card does. Maybe you're confusion is because the 8400GS has a Turbocache feature which uses 256MB of system RAM in addition to the RAM on the card. lpgunit
I also have the same card as cshmech; mine's a Palit-branded GeForce 8400GS, 512MB, along with a Pentium Dual @ 1.8Ghz. The framerate varies from 8~20fps outdoors and 20~30 indoors, unless if you wind up in a police shootout at the Majestic or some other place. And I run it on minimum, forcing the game to run at 640x480. Any cheap yet reliable suggestions on this?

Like heat84 said, what RAM your motherboard supports has nothing to do with the graphics card's memory. That card will work perfectly fine in your board. @lpgunit, Can you give us a budget and a site that you prefer to buy PC components from?
lpgunit
@lpgunit, Can you give us a budget and a site that you prefer to buy PC components from? About $120~130 US. I'll buy it at a nearby store... I already have a processor to play with (a C2D @ 2.2Ghz, not really that powerful but may probably do), but my current card and RAM sucks... anus
How much RAM do you currently have? Only upgrade if you have less than 2GB, otherwise the video card upgrade is best for now as you have a pretty small budget. For that budget, the best card you'll be able to get would be the 8800GT, 9800GT or if they're too expensive, get atleast a 9600GT. Get the 512MB version. And overclock that CPU of yours. You'll be able to get it easily to over 3GHz .
