4870HD Grahpics problem - Auto settings = low? WTF

Video Memory is just something used to sell video cards. You can get a NVidia 9650 GT with 1 gig of V ram yet it would be murdered by my 4870 or a 9800 GTX, both with 512mb.

I've also had 2 cases where it's like the gfx card overheats and you get all the funny colours etc and the whole computer freezes. Those who overclock their graphics card should know what I'm talking about.

The thing is though...I DON'T OVERCLOCK MY GRAPHICS CARD!

I wouldn't be suprised if only 1%of people here that can run it on high. The game is designed to look good on low and can be moved onto max in a few years time when better stuff is out. dont just assume that cos you have 'x' gfx card you'll be able to run it on max. You don't know what you are talking about so STFU.

Not to start a vendor-war, but Ati isn't exactly known for the best up-to-date drivers. And as it was said in one of those previews, R* didn't have full ati support before (actually they said it crashed on ati cards at one point).

I wouldn't decline to purchase it just yet, as we all know Ati will continue to update their drivers, and R* will put out at least one patch icon14.gif

Very mature response bishman with the "STFU" and all.

The game actually looks horrible on low. It looks horrible on medium too actually. Even on high, judging by screenshots, it's trailing many other new games.

I'm expecting an ATI fix shortly.

vram is very important, just because some gfx cards with lots of ram are crap does not mean vram = BS.

It would be interesting to see if someone with a 1024 MB 4870 can turn up the settings. Because something like this was mentioned in the GameStar review, they said that detail levels depended more on video memory than on the video card itself (i.e. a 9500GT with 1024 MB would have higher auto-detect settings than a GTX260 with 896 MB).

Of course that's stupid to some degree, because the GTX260 wipes the floor with a 9500GT. But maybe GTA 4 is such a video memory hog that it actually needs 1024 MB for highest settings or resolutions.

On a card as powerful as the 4870, 1 gig of video memory actually makes sense in some cases.

In that case, however, a 512 MB nVidia card wouldn't do any better. Is there someone around with an nVidia card who can report on this?

I read in another topic that someone was playing it with no issues on an nivida card (8800GT i think), so it sounds like it is just an ATI issue. Hoping that is really the circumstance.

I'm running a 4870 with a 1gb of Vram and i cant max out the view distance. Limits me to 65. Runs really really bad. Not happy at all.

that is so weird. I'm not a fanboy at all but one guy with 8800GT 512MB told that he is running this game fine. No problems at all. It really looks like ATI drivers problem.

EXACT SAME WITH ME!!!! 65!

And I only have the 512mb version.

Can you max everything else but only have textures on medium?

If I lower textures to low then I can get view distance up into the 90s but yeah not happy.

Oh and it runs badly for me too!

But maybe GTA 4 is such a video memory hog that it actually needs 1024 MB for highest settings or resolutions.

OP already stated he tried to lower the resolution and nothing changed.

Shall we start spamming ATI about this issue? Has anyone mailed them yet?

Let's be honest, Nvidia is not the one to be blamed for ATI's incompetence. Whee I got the 4870 I knew sooner or later this would happen.

But why this had to happen with IV?

It's not about honesty but if you watch last games with Meant to be played (I mean the last month, 2 months) You'll see that Ati need a FIX.

I think if ATI worked when they could... fixes wont be needed

So far the only people I've seen this happening to have 4870s. Are there any ATI users with other cards (4850s, 3870s..) that have the same problems ?

Nvidia spend money on those "Best with Nvidia" logos, right? This is good business, both for Nvidia and the developers. Maybe developers do make the games a bit more optimized for Nvidia cards, but ATI drops the ball with their drivers and has to run along with the fixes.

Developers are not stupid, cutting of ATI users would be insane, they would loose a big part of their market. It's all about ATI IMO.

Me, I don't have the game.

But isn't it R* being tied up with Nvidia for better support and all the business deal bullsh*t they make?

I wouldn't blame ATI really.

It's all about R* IMO.

What I see is that 100x ATI users are whining and crying in here that the game looks like a crap and they are disappointed but I don't see ANY Nvidia guy saying that "It looks like crap. I can't even max it out with 1280x800 with my GTX 260 and Quad Core CPU." So it has to mean that the problem is about ATI.

Also there is a review of GTA IV on PC in PC gamer Magazine and they said that the game presents itself perfectly on a dual-core processor (6000+) and GeForce 8800GT GPU. So far all those people who are saying that "it sucks. It lags horrible. I cant max it out with my HD 4870 etc" are been people who have ATI GPU's. One people who had 8800GT told that he was was playing it with no issues with 8800GT.

Talked with a friend running a 4850, seems all 48** series cards are having this issue. Definitely a driver issue. With any luck it will be added to the "fixed" list for the 8.12 driver release on December 10th.

What im trying to say it's that in the last NVMTBP Ati is having STRANGE problems to be up to date with drivers.....

What I mean it's that Nvidia it's making Ati life impossible with this sponsored games...

ATI could do the same. And they could do a better job with the drivers.

I'm more or less an ATI person. This time around I wanted to go with Nvidia, but 4870 was just too goddamn tempting.
