The DLC, is it really that great?

Recommended Posts

GtaMaster1993

Okay, before you start saying " the only reason you don't like the DLC is because you're a PS3 fanboy ", i dont have a PS3, i have a 360.

Basically my point is that, what is going to be so great about the DLC, wow, an extra gun or two here, a new car and bike there.. who cares?

All there is really going to be is a new playable character, a couple of new weapons and vehicles, and a new, sweet, but short storyline.

I cant really see how microsoft can spend 50 million on an item that wont probably hit 1 million in sales.

to me it sounds stupid, the entire DLC sounds stupid.

I realise there is gonna be new multiplayer modes too etc, and this is only the 1st pack out of the two, but in my opinion, f*ck DLC! it almost seems pointless... suicidal.gif

I think it is cool, but yes I don't think it is going to give a positive return on that 50 mil. that MS spent on it.

Unless they make it pricey, which they probably will since it has to break the $50 mil. mark.

There's still a lot of stuff that hasnt been confirmed yet, and it's still awhile left till the release of it. I gurantee it'll be worth your money.

Also, how retarded are you to think that they'll only make 1 million? lol.gif

seeing as apparently itll cost 1200 points, or something. and seeing as how that is only like £15. or about $25. then a hella alot of people are gonna have to buy this DLC.

Well let's see at $25 it will take 2,000,000 to get at least 50 mil.

So how many people bought this game, someone give me the number plz

Wiki says: "As of 16 August 2008, the game has sold over 10 million copies.". I think something like 60% were on the 360.

About 11 million. It sold 3 million within the first 24 hours of release. And they only need a million people to buy The Lost and Damned to break even, as they paid £25,000,000 for each episode.

i dont know precisely, but that counts the ps3 version in as well. and seeing as how ps3 gets no dlc. id cut 2,000,000 to 1,000,000. making it even harder to get to 50,000,000

Is that stat 360 sales only? Also, wasn't the 50mil for both episodes of DLC or was it 50mil each? If it was for both then they still have another on the way to make back that 50mil which wouldn't be too hard.

2 million people will not buy it.

GTA4 is dead.

why would people spend 20-30 pound/euro/dollar on something that will die faster than celtic out of the champions league[if your American you will not understand that]

so 10 mil but 60% of that so like (Got me a graphing calc) 6 mil own 360 version of GTA 4.

Then MS needs 2 mil people buying the DLC to get exactly $50 mil.

Lets say 50% of 360 GTA4 owners buy DLC, which is then 3 mil, then MS just got 75 mil dollars, but minus the 50 mil they spent to get it, they got a positive return of 25 mil.

Thats if 3 mil buy it, then of course we have to take into account how many people have internet access on their xbox 360.

Well can't figure that out so it is possible for them to get a lot of money.

call of duty 4 was the most popular game on xbox live and the maps sold 1 million in 9 days, where as GTA IV is not as popular on xbox live, i doubt M$ will even break even with this deal.

Exactly, in your opinion. Others find that all that stuff (new story, weapons, clothes, vehicles etc.) great!

I don't think Microsoft even cares about breaking even. They said it themselves a while back that it would be up to Rockstar whether they were going to charge for the games or not.

However, just to go with the discussion, you have to take in the fact that MS would not be getting 100% of the profits made from the DLC. So if they did manage to bring in $50 million with the two episodes, Some of that would go to Microsoft and some would go to Rockstar. They'd have to sell a lot more than what's been projected in this thread in order for them to break even.

I can't tell if that was sarcasm or not, but yes, that's exactly what it is. They don't need to break even on the DLC, because just by getting the DLC exclusive on their console, it made the full game sell more on the 360. That's the way I see it. Why else would they make the deal so early on? Microsoft announces they're getting exclusive content, it sways buyers to get the 360 version over the PS3 version, thus getting more 360 sales.

So, in theory, Microsoft could have already broke even with how many more copies of GTAIV sold on the 360 compared to the PS3. What was it? 3 to 1?

It's not about breaking even with the money itself, do you really think Microsoft needs to make that money back? The DLC exclusivity was to promote the Xbox version of the game on launch, they wanted Xbox IV sales to annihilate PS3's, which as we all know, didn't happen.

I have a PS3 and I think the DLC looks awesome currently, and the weapons and vehicles haven't even been revealed yet.

You guys are all forgetting this is just 1 of 2 DLC episodes included in the deal, so right off the bat all your estimates for what this needs to sell are twice as much as they should be.

On top of that, Microsoft has already made money off of this DLC from all the people who chose to buy the Xbox 360 console and game based on the DLC. If you didn't have a current-gen console and you wanted to buy one to play GTAIV the 360 was clearly the way to go because of the DLC (amongst many other reasons) and I'm sure that was a huge deciding factor for a lot of people. Along with that comes all the other accessories: controllers, Gold Live accounts, other games etc.

It's so much more complicated than "Microsoft needs to sell X units to break even". This is one of the many business decisions Microsoft has made that's put them far over Sony in the western world. They're doing very well.

It's closer than 60%-40% but if we assume that 60% of copies were on X360, that's around 6 million copies worldwide give or take.

Probably less than half of those will be bothered with it depending on the price and then you have to consider that even fewer of those will have access to Xbox Live because it's only available in less than a dozen countries.

United States

United Kingdom

Canada

Denmark

Mexico

Singapore

Sweden

Other Europe

Australia

New Zealand

Japan

I'd say 3 million downloads max, more likely 1.5-2.0, but I don't believe for a minute that they will charge $25, more likely $15. Remember it's $25m an Episode (1/2).

Some analyst was quoted saying he expected them to do 2-3 million downloads... not that it's fact or that i care very much for analysts, but they often are fairly accurate. This whole thing is just weird honestly... I really don't get why people are even bitching about this. If you want it get it... if not don't. Though I do need to say that those of you that are saying how much it is going to suck really don't make sense to me... it's a new GTA game... how is that a bad thing unless you really don't like GTA? I dunno, I guess for me GTA was the only reason I even bothered buying a console in the first place... more of it just makes the console more useful in my opinion.

Enough of the money talk! The competition between Sony and Microsoft has become quite irrelevant at this point, as the project is in Rockstar's hands.

Yes, they could of corse have made a small expanison, added a couple of new cars, guns and missons and then had it released earlier this fall. I'm pretty sure they would have sold enough to make it proffitatable... But they didn't! Why? Because R* focuses on the quality of their products! This is one of the big reasons that the GTA franchise has become so popular in the first place.

Don't forget Microsoft stated earlier that the DLC will be out this fall, probably putting a lot of pressure on R* at the time. However, R* decided to work on it for a couple of more months before the release. To me this is proof enough that the dlc is to be more than a quick way to earn money.

Back on topic:

As I see it, the only limits for the DLC are the production time and the location itself, Liberty city. The possibilities are still pretty much endless. What I am hoping for are entertaining and stable sidemissions that can be activated at any time. That way the game would have more replay value, even after finishing the main storyline(s).

Talking in terms of return:

You have to remeber that this content is going to be avaliable for the rest of the life of the 360, There are going to be other people picking up 360's and buying stuff to enhance there games that they get.

These DLC packs will really rake in the dosh maybe not right away but will over time

I hope we have to kill Niko

Why would you wanna do that? lol.gif It would have to be really hard then or else it wouldn't be realistic. I mean, Niko killed many people, was in a war, survived gun shootouts, and it would be stupid if you could kill him within a few hits.

Anyways, the DLC is great or at least sounds great. It's good cause the next GTA would take a long time to arrive. alien.gif
