You'll get your exclusive DLC from one company: Microsoft. Because that's the only company that's getting any exclusive DLC for GTA IV.

I searched the VC section "Xbox" and then went to the last couple pages... probably had the same stuff in the SA section, however the SA section was "archived" and you can't search back that far in that section.

This thread is so similar to what was going on 6 years ago...

Where are the threads from 6 years ago that talk about the $50 million deal that only gave Sony a few months of exclusivity?

Oh, that's right, there are no threads about a $50 million deal 6 years ago because there wasn't a $50 million deal back then.

There's never been a $50 million DLC deal ever so you there's no precedent. You can dig up all the old threads you want but it's not gonna matter.

and again, it's $50 f*cking million. Why is it so easy for the PS3 owners to flat-out ignore this massive sum of money?

If you think Microsoft gave Rockstar that kind of money for a deal that gives Sony access to the content any time soon you're either incredibly naive or are in serious denial.

I think he's more or less just saying how this whole DLC thing going on is simlar to how people back then were hoping for GTA on Xbox despite the fact that Sony did pay for an exclusive contract for the GTA's to release on the PS2 before the Xbox and before Double Pack released it was more or less people just saying how they thought GTA would still make it to the Xbox some way.

In this case Sony is the Xbox and Microsoft is the PS2 in this situation. Microsfot has the excluive deal which we don't know the real information on the deal including how long it last similar to the Sony and R* PS2 agreement. The PS3 owners are the Xbox fans hoping GTA still comes to the Xbox.

Also you must not know anything about the buisness world, because in the world of buisness unless you own it then contracts usually are timed contracts and the 3rd party involved can do what they want after that contract is up. So since Microsft doesn't own R* or GTA or publish the GTA games under a contract, then all they have is a timed contract. It's up to R* to do what they want with the DLC content after their contract is up.

I was referring to the fanboyism ... it was mainly with the PC players if you read the threads-- a few xboxers chimed in.

(I usta be a fan-boy-- I'm a fan-man now)

Let me set the record straight-- I think it highly unlikely it will ever come to PS3, only that it is possible (but still very unlikely) for it eventually come out in a year or two. I do think it very likely to come to PC (if there is money to be made) as this is not a threat to MS.

and again it seems like you're ignoring the fact that $50 million can buy you an unending/perpetual contract that never expires or it can buy you a hell of a lot of time when it comes to exclusivity.

This could be a contract that doesn't expire for 20 years. How's that for your timed exclusive?

Ok, how many copies of GTA IV have sold world wide? It was at around 10 million back in August and the PC version has since been released. So lets say around 12-15 million?

Microsoft paid $50 million to Rockstar to develop this content. Let's say Xbox owners make up around 6-7 million of the GTA IV owners. Maybe around 70-80% of those owners are connected to Xbox Live. Maybe around 50% of those owners will buy the content. So around 2.5 million users. If $20 is charged for the content that'll bring in $50 million. If Microsoft take 70% of that, it leaves Rockstar with $15 million for the first episode. So Rockstar would take around $30 million for both episodes.

Now if Rockstar developed that content for all 3 platforms, they'd probably spend around around $60-70 million to develop it and get it working on the 3 platforms. About $35 million per episode? They'd then sell the content for the same $20. Going from calculations made earlier, they'd again bring in $50 million from Xbox Live owners. That would cover the costs of the first episode and give them around $20 million profit. Then there are the Playstation and PC users to factor in. All money made there can be classed as pure profit. Don't forget that would be doubled over the 2 episodes.

Which one of those seems the most profitable to Rockstar?

Purchasing the exclusive rights to the DlC was most likely meant to lure players to purchase the 360 over the PS3. If this was Microsoft's motive then they would benefit more from increased console sales as an investment (albeit unquantifiable) rather than DLC sales. But If MS wanted to recoup their $50 million purely from DLC content and make a profit, then it would seem prudent that they would discharge the contract and allow the DLC content to be sold to PS3 users (assuming ofc that such term exists in the contract).

How does making the DLC available to PS3 owners help Microsoft in any way financially?

There's no scenario where Microsoft will concede to that, unless Sony agreed to put the DLC on their system and give all the money to Microsoft, and you know that isn't happening either.

Here's something that blows a massive hole in that theory:

Microsoft paid $50 million for their DLC, Sony has paid nothing and that's why they'll get nothing.

Furthermore, there's no way Microsoft left a loophole for Rockstar to just make another deal with Sony. I think PS3 owners need to familiarize themselves with the definition of the word "exclusive". It comes down to common sense.

Finally, if Sony was even willing to pay Rockstar that kind of money in the first place we probably would be sitting here talking about Sony's big multi-million dollar exclusivity deal but we're not. Sony undoubtedly had a chance to get this content but Microsoft was more aggressive.

That is correct, although you missed what I was trying to get at. The exclusive rights deny ps3 gamers from getting the DLC - if MS wanted to profit wholly from DLC sales then they would never have formed this contract. Instead they could have tried to purchase ownership rights over the DLC and sell it on all systems thereby gaining from a profit sharing arrangement with Rockstar/Take Two -- rather than rely on their exclusivity rights. Seeing as they did not do this and given that it is unlikely that the DLC will take in substantial amounts, it shows that MS were specifically trying to deny ps3 users from getting the content. Combined with the exclusivity rights that they own with the Fallout 3 DLC, then it seems more apparent that MS intend to weaken Sony's user base by denying ps3 users from various content. This makes it seem less likely that ps3 users will get the DLC.

Why could Microsoft possibly sue Rockstar, who own the game and any content they make, for making additional content for the PS3 that differs to The Lost and the Damned? Rockstar can create and do whatever they please with content outside of the "exclusivity" rights of Microsoft's.

there's the opprative statement.OUTSIDE of the EXCLUSIVITY RIGHTS.that means ps3 gets no dlc 1 or 2 and then and only then,if it's financially lucrative, they will make more.but that'll go 2 everyone unless some sort of deal is struck by another third party(m$R*nintendofu*kwhtevr)either way.no dlc 1 and 2 for sony.end of story.

I don't think any DLC will do much for GTA IV. I've followed and played each Grand Theft Auto game, (even though I was way too young), except for Vice City Stories and Advance and this is the first one that I've actually become bored with and moved on to other things from.

Because Microsoft had paid good money to get exclusive content and if Sony were given free exclusive content by Rockstar, then it would not be ethical business having been paid by MS for content and creating another set of DLC with no contract from Sony.

@ PS3 players-- quit whining-- there is a snowballs chance in hell we will get this content-- Very, very, very unlikely. Speculate all you want-- If you don't hear any anouncement by the end of 2009, I doubt it will ever come out for PS3-- if for sure will not be announced until a few months after the 2nd intallment... that being said-- don't hold your breath. Go find a friend with a box and trade your PS3 with them for a month--

@xbox players-- why do you care if the PS3 players get this content, or if they speculate about or whine about not getting it-- do you have that much emotional attachment to your consoles?? It's not enough for you to think you may have a better console, you want PS3 players to say the xbox is better....Move on.

Spuds: I for one want to see PS3 owners who complain about the exclusivity to be punished for a) not taking note that the DLC was announced well before the PS3 was released b) that Xbox/PC owners didn't whine like this over Sony's timed exclusivity or the Stories' full exclusivity.
