Philosophic Modality & Inductive Reasoning

Recommended Posts

Wanted Assailant

Modality; materials that are now, is purely because of coincidence. You could of been a little smaller, or you could of been a little taller. All of these are possible but not actual. Some things are just plain and undoubtly, necessarily true, such as mathematics ( 2 + 2 = 4) and logic (Socrates is a man; all men are mortal; therefore Socrates is mortal). Deductive reasoning revolves around conclusions that are true, such as the 'Socrates is a man', while inductive reasoning does not.

Inductive reasoning and Modality tie in similarily. Inductive reasoning is when we reason from ways things haven been in the past in order to draw conclusions about the way they are always, or will always will be. For example, we believe the sun will rise tomorrow because the sun has risen in the past. Likewise, we believe all books have pages because of all of the books we have seen have pages. When we say something is normal, such as, "a normal day," we mean that day was as "normal" as the others through inductive reasoning. Most of the beliefs we have about the world are based on inductive reasoning.

Therefore and somehow, the life presented to us seen in your eyes could of have been something totally different and opposing. Your reality could of been different.

While there are no guarantees that the sun will rise tomorrow it is the most logical assumption if we are to plan for tomorrow. At the end of the day we are only human, sure we cannot predict what will happen tomorrow but if we are to plan for tomorrow is should be based on past experiences without putting all our faith in it. Prepare for the unexpected without ignoring the expected.

You're not nesecarily presupposing induction here either, which seems to be the biggest mistake made when you try to talk to people about it. You're just planning for the unknown based on what you 'know' best at the time of planning. Its the most logical thing to do, you could of course prepare to become a dog tomorrow but in your current state you know most about being a human.

I would argue that we can be sure of the suns rising tomorrow, based on our knowledge of physics, the Solar system and current cosmoligcal events but I would say what we cannot be sure of is if we, either individually or in terms of the human race, will be there to witness it.

On what basis do you assume that physics, the solar system or current cosmolgical events will act the same tomorrow as they do today? Because they always have? That is presupposing induction without solving it.

It can't be solved by the way, its just something philosophers think of to pass the time and make them feel like they're doing something tounge2.gif.

Who's to say that the sun wouldn't explode all of a sudden, even if we have the expertise in physics, the solar system or current cosmolgical events to say it won't?

As humans we can never be so certain. We pertain gullibility easily and and absorb subjects of materials in our collective memory almost without thought. When there's a CNN/Fox News/BBC or any other nationally televised broadcast, if they proclaim that retail pet food cans are hazardous, given that people say that those news broadcasts are more reliable than others such as The Sun, they would almost instantly believe so. All because of the background behind such things. A dumbfounded salesman who doesn't know a thing about the Japanese Yakuza, who suddenly declares, "The Japanese Yakuza are in the business of human traffiking", is less likely to be believed by people than someone who is a Japanese Yakuza informant speaking on the court stand.

Hahaha, I know it can't be solved, but this is the sort of time wasting I love. Hell, I'm going to be doing it for the next 3 years at uni. tounge.gif
