flicko
Welcome, to the first of what one hopes to be many annual GTAF sporting voting competitions. In this topic you can vote for the performance listed in this first post, or submit your very own performance, which you believe deserves to be crowned 'GTAF's Sports performance of the year 2008'. So, onto the nominees, if you want to submit your very own sports performance you believe deserves this accolade, then say a word or two about why you have chose each performance you submit. Of course, I will be adding all nominees into the mix, whether they deserve their own category, or fit into the 'Other Notables' list. But for obvious reasons, I have only listed the sports performances that, to me, have excelled the most through this past year. Right, here's information on the current list of nominees- Rebecca Adlingtons two gold medals in the 2008 Summer Olympics On the 11th August history was made. An unknown female freestyle swimmer by the name of Rebecca Adlington, re-wrote history when she won the gold medal in the women's 400 metre freestyle swimming event, beating off World record holder Federici Pellegrini, and also pulled back a 20 metre gap to win by a fingernail over American star Katie Hoff. And that's not all, Adlington, already destined for greatness, then went on to win the 800 metre women's freestyle final, in an obliterating time of 8:14.10, completely annihilating the field and smashing the longest standing swimming World record in the event by over two seconds. With two Olympic Gold medals, Rebecca Adlington is now the most successful female swimming athlete in British history, and became the first British swimmer to win two gold medals in the pool since 1908. -400M freestyle final video. -800M freestyle final video. Usain Bolts three World records in the 100m, 200m and 4x100 metre relay, at the 2008 Summer Olympics-Since the Beijing Olympics, Usain Bolt has heralded the nickname Usain 'lightning' Bolt, for obvious reasons. He won not one, not two, but three Gold medals at the Beijing Olympic games, breaking all sorts of records in the process. In the men's 100 metre final, he was up against Jamaican team mate Asafa Powell. Many were undecided over who would triumph, but I think everybody simply watched in awe, as Usain Bolt destroyed the field, and won the race in a mesmerising time of 9.69 seconds. In 100 metre terms, he smashed his own World record. And whats more amazing, is that he actually slowed down with 20 metres to go, an started celebrating. Usain Bolt became the fastest man in history, and he didn't even go full tilt all the way through the race. Unbelievable. And then he had the 200 metres final to run. The 200 metres event is Usain's preferred event, and he went on a mission to beat Micheal Johnson's 12 year World record of 19.32 seconds. The race began, and as usual, Bolt completely destroyed the opposition, won the race by about 30 metres and broke the World record, again! He achieved a time of 19.30 seconds, which is simply astonishing, and mind-blowingly quick. Bolt then went on a quest to win the 4x100 metre relay final with the Jamaican team, who, quite simply, had already won the event before it even started. As you can guess, Jamaica won the event and smashed the 16 year World record, originally by the Americans. And Bolt played a massive part in that. -Mens 100M final video. -Mens 200M final video. -Mens 4x100M relay final video. Chris Hoy's record breaking three Gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics-Chris Hoy became the first athlete in over 100 years to win three Olympic gold medals in one games, and was a major part of Britain's Velodrome success. Hoy simply dominated in the Sprint and Keirin events, and was also part of the World dominating British team in the team sprint event. In the Team sprint, Chris Hoy and his team mates outfought the field, beating France in the final to win the gold medal. Hoy then went on to dominate the keirin event, outclassing British team mate Ros Edgar in the final. And in the men's individual sprint, Hoy outclassed another Brit, Jason Kenny in the final to win his third gold medal of the games. -Information on Chris Hoy's route to triple Gold. Micheal Phelps astonishing 8 Gold medals at the 2008 Summer OlympicsIn the 2008 Olympic Phelps won the following events- 200 metre freestyle (1:42.96) WR 100 metre butterfly (50.58) OR 200 metre butterfly (1:52.03) WR 200 metre individual medley (1:54.23) WR 400metre individual medley (4:03.84) WR 4x100 metre freestyle relay (3:08.24) WR 4x200 metre freestyle relay (6:58.56) WR 4 x100 metre medley relay WR In Seven out of these eight event, Phelps and his team mates broke an astonishing seven World records, and only achieved a measly Olympic record in the 100 metre individual medley! This has gave Phelps the comfort in knowing he is officially the most successful Olympic athlete of all time, at the age of just 23. Phelps won all of these eight gold medals in the space of seven days, and he also won two gold medals in one day! Phelps sheer endurance, stamina and natural ability to glide through the water unlike no other swimmer at the Olympic games, is widely considered the greatest moment of the year, and possibly all time. Unbelievable. -Phelps Tribute. China's Gold medal haul at the 2008 Summer Olympics-The hosts of the 2008 Olympic games certainly didn't disappoint their country in terms of winning medals. In total the Chinese team managed to win 51, that's right, 51 Gold medals! Beating off everybody else, including the United States of America, who managed to win more medals overall, but only 36 golds, compared to China's record breaking tally. -Chinese Gold medalists. Team GB's surprise medal haul at the 2008 Summer OlympicsWith 19 Gold medals, 13 silver medals and 15 Bronze medals, Team GB shocked not only other countries around the World, but Great Britain itself was shocked and mesmerized at just how many medals we achieved. We more than exceeded expectations, as we hit Sebastien Coes 2012 target of 4th place in the medal table, four years early. I don't think anybody would have predicted Team GB to win as many medals as we did. A truly sterling performance. -Team GB medalists. Jamaica's sprinting success at the 2008 Summer OlympicsTrack sprinting is somewhat of a national sport in Jamaica. And they certainly showed why this is the case with their complete dominance at the 2008 Olympics. The Jamaican team won a total of 11 medals in track sprinting events; Six Gold, two silver and two bronze, and here are the list of winners- -Gold Usain Bolt- Men's 100M and 200M Melanie Walker- Women's 400M hurdles Shelly-Ann Fraser- Women's 100M Veronica Campbell-Brown- Women's 200M Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, Micheal Frater and Nesta Carter- Men's 4x100M relay -Silver Sherone Simpson- Women's 100M Shericka Williams- Women's 400M -Bronze Kerron Stewart- Women's 100M and 200M Shericka Williams, Shereefa Lloyd, Rosemarie Whyte and Novelene Williams- Women's 4x400M relay As you can see, the Jamaicans simply dominated the track event, and completed a 1, 2, 3 in one race for the first time in their history, in the Women's 100M final. Three World records were also broken by the Jamaicans as well. A great performance. Lewis Hamilton's last gasp victory in the Formula One championshipEarlier this year, Lewis Hamilton became the youngest ever Formula One champion, at the age of 23. He narrowly edged out Brazilian Felipe Massa in the very last lap of the very last race of the Championship. Hamilton started the race in 5th place, whereas his arch rival, Felipe Massa took the pole position. If logic proved right, all Hamilton had to do was hold on to that 5th place, and even if Massa won the race, Hamilton would still be crowned F1 champion, as going into the race Hamilton had a 7 point lead over Massa. Hamilton did manage to hold on to that 5th place position, in a nail-biting final lap where he found himself down and out in 6th position at one stage, as Sebastien Vettel overtook him. And by that time Massa had already won the race. But, Hamilton managed to overtake Timo Glock right near the end, to secure 5th place and his first ever Formula One World championship. Hamilton's endurance, and positive attitude, as well as his undoubted ability helped him win the title, and put him in the record books. And at only 23, Hamilton's future is looking ever more promising. - Rafael Nadal's victory over Roger Federer at WimbledonSecond seed Rafael Nadal went into this years championship at Wimbledon seeking revenge over five time consecutive winner, and number one seed Roger Federer. Perhaps the greatest rivalry in the history of tennis was topped by the final these two legends played out. The final lasted a jaw dropping four hours and forty eight minutes, the longest in history. The final score being- 6–4, 6–4, 6–7(5), 6–7(8), 9–7 ...to Nadal. It was the first time that Nadal had won at Wimbledon, in the most amazing of circumstances. Nadal had chance after chance to win the title, but Federer kept plugging away to win break points right when he looked out of it. The game went all the way down to the wire, but Nadal sheer power, and will to never give up saw him win this monstrous final. A great match to witness. -Wimbledon 2008 final highlights. Sachin Tendulkar's record breaking Test runs tallyOn October 17, 2008, Sachin Tendulkar broke Brian Lara's long standing Test runs record of 11,953, by becoming the first man in history to achieved over 12,000 Test runs. Tendulkar's current tally is at 12,723, and he surpassed Brain Lara's record against Australia. It's been a long time coming as well, since he first started over 20 years ago, this is a remarkable achievement. -The moment Tendulkar re-wrote history. The champions league final between Manchester United and ChelseaFor the first time in history, the Champions league final was an all English affair, between arch rivals, and top two teams in the premiership; Chelsea and Manchester United. Manchester United, already having one over Chelsea concerning the Domestic title, were favourite prior to the match. But only slightly. The game began nicely, with both teams deadlocked for a while. But, i the 26th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo rose above the Chelsea defence to head United into the lead. But on the stroke of half time, bad defending and lackluster decisions opened up a gap, which Frank Lampard capitalized on to level the game at one each, going into the break. The second half had less events, and neither team managed to get the winner, forcing the game into extra time. Both teams threatened in extra time, but both teams failed to score and get the decisive winner, and the game went to penalties. In the 116th minute of extra time, Chelsea striker Didier Drogba received a red card, leaving Chelsea with 10 men for the final minutes. So onto penalties. Both teams successfully scored their first two penalties, when goalscorer, and fans man of the match, Cristiano Ronaldo, failed to dispatch Manchester United's third spot kick. Chelsea scored their third spot kick, putting them in the driving spot to win the cup. And up stepped John Terry. On the approach to hit the ball, Terry lost his footing and didn't catch the ball properly. The ball ricocheted off of the post and wide of the goal. This meant that both teams scored four penalties each, and the game would go into sudden death. Both Anderson and Kalou both scored their penalties, and so did Giggs, leaving a lot of pressure on Anelka's shoulders. If he missed, Chelsea lost. Van Der Sar managed to guess which way Anelka was shooting, and saved the spot kick. Manchester United won the Champions league in the most dramatic circumstances, against their main rivals for a long time. For a neutral, the game was fantastic viewing, and one of the high points of the footballing year. -The 2008 Champions league final information. -Champions league penalty shoot out. Barnsley's victories over Liverpool and then Chelsea in the FA cup (Credit to this goes to kietotheworld)-Barnsley defeated Liverpool at Anfield, then went on to knock out a nigh-on full strength Chelsea side, without even the use of extra time, let alone penalties, was a great achievement. Don't forget these are two teams who reached the CL Semis and Final in the last 2 years.Havant and Waterlooville's FA cup run (credit to this goes to DanManUtd)-"Ian Baird was replaced by Shaun Gale in October 2007. In the 2007-08 season, the team caused a shock by defeating League One side, Swansea City 4–2 in an FA Cup 3rd round replay. In the 4th round they faced Premiership side Liverpool at Anfield. They caused a sensation by leading twice before losing 5–2. Havant & Waterlooville player, Alfie Potter, on loan at the time from Peterborough United was voted player of the round. They reached the fourth round in the 2007–08 competition, beating York City and Notts County away and Swansea City at home before eventually bowing out away at Liverpool in the fourth round." From Wikipedia.org Burnley FC's run in the Carling cup-Championship side Burnley faced some tough opposition in this years Carling cup. They went on to triumph over both Chelsea, and then Arsenal, and are currently in the semi final stage. The game against Chelsea was very close. In full time both teams could not be separated, and the game ended 1-1. Extra time produced nothing, so onto penalties. Burnley successfully scored 5 penalties to Chelsea's four, and progressed to a quarter final showdown with Arsenal. Against Arsenal, the game was tense, with both teams having chances, when Burnley took a 1-0 lead. For a while Arsenal threatened to equalise, until Burnley scored a second to secure a 2-0 win, and progressed to the semi final. Eastwood Town FC's current FA cup run- Unibond outfit Eastwood Town have surprised all this season, and are currently in the Third round of the FA cup, which is practically unheard of for a club of this stature. They beat Wrexham in the fourth qualifying round, and were already being hailed as heroes, and then they went on to win Brackley in the first round proper 2-1. And to top that they won the only remaining unbeaten team in the league; Wycombe Wanderers of league 2, 2-0. They currently face a third round tie against League 2's Notts County. This doesn't sound like much, but for a bunch of part timers this is f*cking amazing. Spain's European Championship victoryFor the first time since 1964, Spain won the European Championships in style. They dominated their group, winning all three games versus Russia (4-1), Sweden (2-1) and Greece (2-1). The first result is particularly impressive, as Russia went on to finish third in the whole competition. In the quarter final stage, Spain were up against World Champions Italy, who scraped through. The game was tight and nobody scored in the full 90 minutes, or the 30 minutes of added time, putting the game into penalties. Spain won the penalty shoot out 4-2 to progress to the semi final stage. In the semi final, Spain were up against Russia again, who dispatched one of the favourites in the quarter final; Holland, and were looking very strong and improved since the countries first encounter. But Spain annihilated Russia 3-0, to progress to the final, with a showdown against Germany. The final was a very tense encounter, with both teams on form , the game was shaped up to be a thriller. However, the game was very tight, and the only goal of the game went to Spain's and Liverpool's striker Fernando Torres, after he sprung past the defence to finish coolly. So, Spain won the game 1-0, and won the tournament. David Villa was the top scorer for Spain, an top scorer in the whole competition, and Spain's Xavi was named the player of the tournament. A great performance. -UEFA Euro 2008 information. -European cup final highlights. USA's emphatic Ryder cup victory over EuropeOn the 19th-21st September 2008, USA and Europe fought out for the 37th time, to be crowned Ryder cup champions. USA simply dominated proceedings, and the final score was this- 16½ - 11½ This was USA's largest victory margin for nearly thirty years, and the first time they'd won the trophy since 1999, which is four tournaments back. The USA captain, Paul Azinger played his tactics and picked his team very well, and comfortably won the title, minus Tiger Woods. -2008 Ryder cup information. - New Zealand's Rugby League World cup victory over the Australians One of the greatest upsets in the history of Rugby league. Australia went into the tournament as outright favourite, many people said they were the only country in the entire tournament. They showed blistering form, by destroying Third seed nation England by 52-4, as well as beating New Zealand 32-6 ans Papua New Guinea 46-6 in the group stage. In the semi final Australia battered Fiji 52-0 to progress to the final. New Zealands run to the final saw them fend off England and Papua New Guinea in the knockout stages, and losing to the Australians still meant they went through in second place. In the semi final they beat England for the second time, by 32-22, meaning they progressed to the final, with a showdown with Australia. Going into the final, many people had Australia down to win the tournament for the 7th consecutive time, but New Zealand showed class, and matched Australia in every department. The final score was 34-22, to the All blacks, after they dominated the Aussies in the latter half of the game. Many people were shocked, as New Zealand caused one of the biggest upsets in Rugby League history. -2008 Rugby league World cup information. -2008 Rugby league World cup final. Tiger Woods US open victory, with him injured throughout the tournament-2008 was an injury-shortened season for Woods, but it didn't stop him from winning his fourteenth major championship. Woods was up against the best in the World, and had just undergone knee surgery. He managed to play his own game, despite having to not put pressure on his knee. After he won the Championship Woods described it as his best Major championship victory because of the circumstances, and many people said he won the championship on 'one leg'. Shortly after the US open, Woods again had surgery on his knee, which shows of the severity of his injury, an highlights how impressive this victory was. -Tiger Woods US open victory. Manny Pacquiao's sheer dominance over Oscar De La Hoya (credit to JoeyLeone25 for this)-Demolition job. The only words that can be used to describe what Manny Pacquiao did to Oscar De La Hoya in those 27-odd minutes they spent boxing together in the middle of the ring. Manny was superior in every respect, he was quicker than Oscar, more confident than Oscar and most importantly went in with a solid gameplan of constantly keeping the older fighter on his feet and using his speed to his advantage. This victory reaffirms Manny's status as the top pound-for-pound boxer at the minute, and it's even more spectacular when you think this was once, of only a handful of times when Manny had risen above the 130lb weight limit (and HBO were even speculating that he was even heavier than Oscar in the ring as well by a couple of pounds!). All in all, it was a brilliant one-sided victory from a great young fighter, and despite this fight pretty much putting the final nail in Oscar's Boxing coffin in my opinion, we all have something much more exciting to look forward to on the bright side within the Filipino Feather, the Punishing Powerful Pac-Man; Manny Pacquaio. To finish my post, here are the punch stats from the fight collated by HBO: Total Punches: Oscar De La Hoya – Manny Pacquaio Landed 83 – 224 Thrown 402 – 585 PCT 21% - 38% Power Punches: Landed 51 – 195 Thrown 164 – 333 PCT 31% - 59% Manny essentially landed three punches for every one Oscar managed to land on him! And in the seventh round, history was made, as it was the most punches Oscar had ever taken in a round before. Manny Pacquiao: "Your still my idol." [to Oscar] Oscar De La Hoya: "No, now YOUR my idol." NFL (National Football League, credit to this goes to Vanilla Shake)- New York Giants winning the Super Bowl, effectively ending the undefeated streak of the New England Patriots The New York Jets ending the undefeated streak of the Tennessee Titans The New York Giants have only lost 1 game this season so far, so I find that to be quite amazing as well. If anybody would like to elaborate on any of these, or ad their own suggestions, please feel free. NHL-National Hockey League (credit for this goes to darthYENIK)- • Teemu Selanne's 13 consecutive power play goals Over the course of this season, Teemu has gotten 13 consecutive power play goals, and still counting. Not only does he lead the league in the category of power play goals, but he has more power play goals than either the Columbus Blue Jackets, or the New Jersey Devils (who both have 12 as of 8th of December).• The San Jose Sharks-The San Jose Sharks. The sharks have gone into December with a record of 22 wins, 3 loses, and 2 overtime loses, earning a whooping 46 game points in 27 games to lead the NHL. They also remain unbeaten at home with a record of 14-0-2.NBA (National Basketball Association)-Open for anybody to add a performanceMLB-Major League Baseball (Credit to this goes to darthYENIK)- Francisco Rodriguez. The pitcher set the single season saves record in Baseball, with 62 saves, five saves more than the record set by Bobby Thigpen in 1990.WWE (World Wrestling Association)-Open for anybody to add a performanceOther notables- A-league- (credit to this inclusion goes to Justin)Joel Griffiths' free kick (third goal in video, 2:07 onwards - MUST SEE front-on at 3:08) Santalab's goal (1:14 onwards) Entire game, Central Coast vs Sydney(credit to this inclusion goes to Stefan.)- Newcastles A-League victory Football- (Credit to Stefan for this inclusion) Savo Milosevic' last performance for Serbia Formula One- (Credit to Mark for this inclusion) Lewis Hamilton's last few laps at Silverstone 2008 Beijing Olympics- (credit goes to Jay for this inclusion) Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson, becoming the first American duo to medal in Olympic individual AA competition Poker- (credit goes to GTA3Rockstar for this inclusion) Peter Eastate winning the World series of poker.Any other notables from any other sports will go here. ------------------- Right, that's currently the nominees, the final contenders and poll isn't going to be up until approximately 1st December, give or take a few days, and is going to close on approximately 1st January, 2009. This is where I turn to you, to fill the gaps I have left out. Apologies for not being able to fill in the final slots, as I'm not a big fan of any of the sports. If you have any other suggestions for any other sport, please, feel free to participate in this. As you can see I've only listed the plain obvious moments, so your help will be greatly appreciated. I'd like to thank Vanilla Shake, Justin and Attorney General for their help with this, much obliged. Edited December 9, 2008 by flicko
Stefan.
I'd like to nominate Newcastle's A-League win, or Serbia's 6-1 rape of Bulgaria. Or possibly Savo Milosevic's last performance for Serbia. Do I have to provide videos/links?

kietotheworld
Nadal Vs. Federer at Wimbledon was absolutely insane. Taking away my biases, no sporting event I have ever seen could match that. There was an incredible level of intensity for 9 hours, Nadal and Federer are two amazing Champions and they deserve first and second place respectively in Performance of the Year. Bolt & Phelps' achievements at the Olympics were amazing, yes, the European Cup Final an absolute rollercoaster, I think of it in similar terms to this due mainly to my emotional attachments, but nothing I've ever seen was as good as that Wimbledon final, I'm not even a big fan of Tennis. Mark
If you're on about F1, Lewis' drives in Silverstone and the last few laps of Spa were by far better. Shame the FIA had to get involved in the latter but hey-ho.

Jay
Looks like you still have mad hardons over the British cycling medals. I'd like to nominate Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson, becoming the first American duo to medal in Olympic individual AA competition. And they'll probably win because they're both major hotties. Either that of Phelps. Holy crap, when is the next time (if ever) we'll see someone win 8 goddamn medals (let alone all gold) at one Olympics? Anyway, I've added all nominations into the mix, and have decided to not start the voting process until approximately 10th December 2008, depending on how much I can get on here. This next week is going to be pretty busy, and I might find myself struggling to find time to get on here and update this.

darthYENIK
I got to add this, just because I'm a fan, and need to get the NHL in this in some way. Teemu Selanne's 13 consecutive power play goals. Over the course of this season, Teemu has gotten 13 consecutive power play goals, and still counting. Not only does he lead the league in the category of power play goals, but he has more power play goals than either the Columbus Blue Jackets, or the New Jersey Devils (who both have 12 as of 8th of December). Another one I have to give to a NHL franchise. The San Jose Sharks. The sharks have gone into December with a record of 22 wins, 3 loses, and 2 overtime loses, earning a whooping 46 game points in 27 games to lead the NHL. They also remain unbeaten at home with a record of 14-0-2.
