Welcome, to the first of what one hopes to be many annual GTAF sporting voting competitions. In this topic you can vote for the person listed in this first post, or submit your very own person, who you believe deserves to be crowned 'GTAF's Sports person of the year 2008'.

I don't think there's ever been one of these before, so I'm optimistic how this is going to turn out. But with all the variations of sports in the poll, I'm sure everybody will be involved and vote for there favourite, thus making this topic a success, and turn it into a regular happening.

So, onto the nominees, if you want to submit your very own sports person you believe deserves this accolade, then say a word or two about why you have chose that person. Of course, I will be adding all nominees into the mix, whether they deserve their own category, or fit into the 'Other Notables' list. But for obvious reasons, I have only listed the sports people that, to me, have excelled the most through this past year. Right, here's information on the current list of nominees-

Category- Olympic Heroes-

  • Rebecca Adlington (400 metre and 800 metre freestyle swimmer)-

On the 11th August history was made. An unknown female freestyle swimmer by the name of Rebecca Adlington, re-wrote history when she won the gold medal in the women's 400 metre freestyle swimming event, beating off World record holder Federici Pellegrini, and also pulled back a 20 metre gap to win by a fingernail over American star Katie Hoff. And that's not all, Adlington, already destined for greatness, then went on to win the 800 metre women's freestyle final, in an obliterating time of 8:14.10, completely annihilating the field and smashing the longest standing swimming World record in the event by over two seconds. With two Olympic Gold medals, Rebecca Adlington is now the most successful female swimming athlete in British history, and became the first British swimmer to win two gold medals in the pool since 1908.

Prior to the Olympics, Rebecca Adlington finished first in the World championships in Manchester this year, and was also part of the British team that won a silver medal in the women's 4x200 metre freestyle relay.

Since the Olympics Adlington has received celebrity status, and earned the key to her hometown, as well as having a pub and a Swimming Baths named in her honour. She's also in the running to win British sports personality of the year.

  • Usain Bolt (100 metre and 200 metre sprinter)-

In Fact, I think he'll get disqualified. I mean there's a pretty serious ongoing case against him. There's a lot of speculation that he isn't actually a human being, and is not eligible to race.

I stand by this statement. I mean, he's not a human being, and shouldn't have been eligible to race!

Since the Beijing Olympics, Usain Bolt has heralded the nickname Usain 'lightning' Bolt, for obvious reasons. He won not one, not two, but three Gold medals at the Beijing Olympic games, breaking all sorts of records in the process. In the men's 100 metre final, he was up against Jamaican team mate Asafa Powell. Many were undecided over who would triumph, but I think everybody simply watched in awe, as Usain Bolt destroyed the field, and won the race in a mesmerising time of 9.69 seconds. In 100 metre terms, he smashed his own World record. And whats more amazing, is that he actually slowed down with 20 metres to go, an started celebrating. Usain Bolt became the fastest man in history, and he didn't even go full tilt all the way through the race. Unbelievable.

And then he had the 200 metres final to run. The 200 metres event is Usain's preferred event, and he went on a mission to beat Micheal Johnson's 12 year World record of 19.32 seconds. The race began, and as usual, Bolt completely destroyed the opposition, won the race by about 30 metres and broke the World record, again! He achieved a time of 19.30 seconds, which is simply astonishing, and mind-blowingly quick.

Bolt then went on a quest to win the 4x100 metre relay final with the Jamaican team, who, quite simply, had already won the event before it even started. As you can guess, Jamaica won the event and smashed the 16 year World record, originally by the Americans. And Bolt played a massive part in that.

People who witnessed Bolts actions at the Olympic games were blessed, as they witnessed the fastest man t ever grace this planet, and watched him smash three World records in the process. Truly awe-inspiring.

Before 2008, I have reason to believe that Bolt had never even ran a 100 metre event. And in only his eighth race in the event, he broke Asafa Powell's 9.74 second world record by 0.02 of a second. This shown that Bolt was destined for great things, and he didn't disappoint in the Olympic games.

Chris Hoy (track cyclist)-

With his 69cm thighs, Chris Hoy is one of the Worlds greatest track cyclists. And he shown this by winning a whopping three Gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Hoy simply dominated in the Sprint and Keirin, and was also part of the World dominating British team, in the team sprint event.

In the Team sprint, Chris Hoy and his team mates outfought the field, beating France in the final to win the gold medal. Hoy then went on to dominate the keirin event, outclassing British team mate Ros Edgar in the final. And in the men's individual sprint, Hoy outclassed another Brit, Jason Kenny in the final to win his third gold medal of the games.

Chris Hoy became the first athlete in over 100 years to win three Olympic gold medals in one event, and was a major part of Britain's Velodrome success.

Added to his triumphs at the Olympics, Hoy also won two gold medals at the World championships earlier in the year, in the individual sprint and Keirin. This truly stamped Hoys dominance in the event, and ha made him a legend of the track.

Michael Phelps (multiple events swimmer)-

Michael Phelps; Officially the Greatest Olympian of all time.

Six gold medals in Athens, eight gold medals in Beijing (seven of which were World records, the other one an Olympic record), which totals to 14 gold medals, making him the most successful Olympian ever. And get this; He's only 20 f*cking 3! A real pleasure to watch, and a true legend.

In the 2008 Olympic Phelps won the following events-

-200 metre freestyle (1:42.96) WR

-100 metre butterfly (50.58) OR

-200 metre butterfly (1:52.03) WR

-200 metre individual medley (1:54.23) WR

-400metre individual medley (4:03.84) WR

-4x100 metre freestyle relay (3:08.24) WR

-4x200 metre freestyle relay (6:58.56) WR

-4 x100 metre medley relay WR

In Seven out of these eight event, Phelps and his team mates broke an astonishing seven World records, and only achieved a measly Olympic record in the 100 metre individual medley! tounge.gif

Phelps is already the greatest Olympian ever, and still has his whole career ahead of him. Amazing!

Category- Tennis-

Rafael Nadal-

Rafael Nadal was the first tennis player to beat Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 5 years, in possibly the greatest final of all time. Nadals grit, determination and sheer endurance saw him fend off Federer in a 4+ hour thriller. Nadal also retained his French open title, which he has won four times in a row, by completely battering Roger Federer. This has fully established his nickname of 'The King of the clay'. in doing this, Nadal became the first tennis player since 1980 to win both the French open and Wimbledon in the same year.

Nadal's performances this year have seen him overtake Roger Federer in the tennis rankings for the first time in over 160 weeks. He's had a fantastic tennis year, which is all topped off with his gold medal performance at the Beijing Olympic games.

Category- formula One-

Lewis Hamilton-

Earlier this year, Lewis Hamilton became the youngest ever Formula One champion, at the age of 23. He narrowly edged out Brazilian Felipe Massa in the very last lap of the very last race of the Championship. Hamilton's endurance, and positive attitude, as well as his undoubted ability helped him win the title, and put him in the record books.

And at only 23, Hamilton's future is looking ever more promising.

Category- Football (or soccer)

Cristiano Ronaldo

The 2007/08 football season saw Cristiano Ronaldo rise to being hailed as one of the greatest players in the World. He racked up a total 31 domestic league goals, as well as an extra 11 in other cups, totalling 42 goals. Which is pretty darn good considering his position is not a permanent striker.

Cristiano Ronaldo won the European Golden shoe, and is in the running to win the FIFA World player of the year award. He also played a big part in Manchester United's Champions league winning season, being the top scorer in the competition, as well as scoring the first goal in the final.

Fernando Torres

After joining Liverpool for a record fee, Fernando Torres has done nothing but perform in the Premier league. He scored over 20 goals in his first season, and proved that he is one of the Worlds greatest footballers. Torres has a formidable strike rate for Liverpool, and is one of the in form players of the year. He also scored Spain's winning goal in the final of the 2008 European championships.

Bojan Kirkic

Bojan Krkic should get a mention, considering he broke 2 records and came second in another:

Becoming second youngest Champions League goalscorer ever

Scoring the most goals in a debut season (La Liga)

Becoming Spain's youngest ever player by quite a margin

Not to mention his performances (from what I've seen) throughout their poor season, especially against Man Utd.

And look at this:

Category- Golfers-

Padraig Harington-

In 2008, Padraig Harrington retained his Open Championship title, as well as winning another major tournament, the PGA Championship. This has seen Harrington go to his highest ever World ranking of third, and capped off a fantastic year for him.

I'm not really into golfing that much, so if anybody has a more detailed reply to this, please feel free to post it in.

Category- Boxing-

Joe Calzaghe-

Joe Calzaghe, the winner of the BBC Sports personality of the year award in 2007, aims to retain his award this year. With victories over the very impressive Bernard Hopkins, winning the Ring light Heavyweight title in the process, and then he beat Roy Jones Jnr to retain his title, Calzaghe has had a great year, and kept hold of his undefeated boxing record.

Submitted by Hodgey1989-

Manny Pacquiao-

For becoming a five weight champion and becoming the best pound for pound boxer this year

NFL (National Football League)-Submitted by Vanilla Shake-

Eli Manning (Quaterback for the New York Giants)

For one, he was the MVP for the Super Bowl. But I think he'd deserve it because literally one year ago the Giants co-owner was questioning whether or not they could win with the guy.

The only thing we evaluate is 'Can we win with this guy?' That's the one thing. When we talk about any player at the end of the season, the No.1 question is 'Will he help us win?' And to take it one step further, 'Can we win a championship with this guy?'

After this, he goes on to lead his team to victory at the Super Bowl, faced by incredible odds.

Then there was one of the final plays of the game, when they were losing. Eli nearly got sacked 3 times, but managed to fight out of it, throw the ball to David Tyree, who catches the ball with one hand and his helmet, to gain a first down for the Giants that would inevitably lead to a touchdown pass and a victory with 35 seconds remaining in the game.

Manning takes the snap, back to throw, under pressure, avoids the rush and he's gonna...fight out of it, still fights out of it and then he throws it deep down field wide open Tyree who...MAKES THE CATCH! AT THE 23 YARD LINE! What a play by Manning!

Tyree's amazing catch.

The game winning touchdown.

Plus he's been playing great so far this season.

Submitted by Cuban Warlord-

NHL (National Hockey League)-Submitted by Runey.-

Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins

NBA (National Basketball Association)-Submitted by Cuban Warlord-

Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers

I mean he won the MVP last year and took his team to the NBA Finals. Also this year his team has started 15-1

MLB (Major League Baseball)-Submitted by Cuban Warlord

Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays

He won rookie of the year and lead his team to the World Series. The first time in TB history

WWE (World Wrestling Association)- Submitted by !!GameCH33TA!!

Chris Jericho

March 10, defested Jeff Hardy to obtain the Intercontinental Championship for a record 8th time.

July 28, obtained the World Heavyweight Championship through winning a Championship scramble.

November 3, defeated Batista to win the World Heavyweight Championship inside a Steel Cage.

On the March 10 edition of Raw, Jericho captured the Intercontinental Championship for a record eighth time, this time defeating Jeff Hardy.

At Night of Champions, he lost the Intercontinental title to Kofi Kingston after a successful distraction by Shawn Michaels. At Unforgiven, Jericho lost an Unsanctioned match to Michaels. But in the main event, Jericho entered in the Championship Scramble as a replacement for the defending champion CM Punk and subsequently won the World Heavyweight Championship. On the September 22 edition of Raw he successfully retained his title in a Steel Cage match against CM Punk. At Cyber Sunday, Jericho dropped the title to Batista with Stone Cold Steve Austin as the special guest referee. Eight days later, however, on a three hour special episode of Raw, he defeated Batista to win back the title in a steel cage match. This reign would last until the 2008 Survivor Series, where Jericho lost to John Cena.

In addition, he was the first-ever Undisputed Champion in the WWE.

  • Anderson Silva-

Anderson Silva's fighting year began in March when he successfully defended his UFC Middleweight Championship against the then number one contender, Dan Henderson. In a fight scheduled for five rounds Silva finished the bout in round two after successfully locking in a rear naked choke and submitting Henderson.

In July Silva then went on to fight at the weight of 205lbs (20lbs over his normal fighting weight of 185lbs). The Middleweight fighter took on Light heavyweight fighter James Irving, a dangerous knock out expert with a record of 14-4-1. In one of the greatest MMA moments of this year Silva landed a knock out blow in 1.01 of the very first round. Securing an emphatic win against the heavier opponent and consolidating his position as one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world.

Silva's final title defence of the year came in October when he took on the new Middleweight number one contender, Patric Cote. Cote was coming off four consecutive wins and with Silva returning to the 185lbs Middleweight category, many people were unsure how he would be effected by the 20lbs drop. The fight was an awkward one for Silva and after looking as if he was finally taking control of the bout, the fight was stopped in the third round after Cote sustained an injury to his leg. The outcome ruled Silva as the winner by technical knock out and capped off an amazing year for the Brazilian fighter.

If anyone had any doubt over whether or not Anderson Silva was the best pound for pound fighter in MMA today, the year of 2008 has done wonders as to extinguishing that doubt.

    Summary.

.Successful defence of his Middleweight title against the then number one contender Dan Henderson.

.A 20lbs jump in weight class to deliver a first round knock out over a dangerous and heavier James Irving.

.Another successful title defence after shedding the extra weight to take on a proven fighter, Patric Cote.

Danny Way. On his second run in the Big Air competition as he was coming down from 25 feet above the ramp, which itself is 30+ feet, he hung his legs up on the coping...

Click to watch video.

With doctors advising otherwise, and a broken foot among other problems, he climbed the ramp again...

After his final run, Danny Way held 1st place, with only one competitor with a run to go. He lost the gold to nothing short of an amazing run by Bob Burnquist...

At the end of the day, I doubt many people were giving Danny Way their apologies for losing the gold medal, but congratulating him for showing more heart and determination that has ever been seen at the games.

Right, so that's the shortlist of sports people, and a little information about them. Voting shall begin on 1st December, and shall close on approximately 1st January, 2009. The only thing left to do now is add your sports person into the mix, and then we can get this thing started. Please feel free to add suggestions for any sport you wish, as every single addition will be added some way or another, and will also be greatly appreciated. smile.gif

I would like to thank Justin, Machida and Attorney General for their help with this, much obliged. icon14.gif

I'd like to nominate Eli Manning (Quarterback for the NY Giants) for the NFL category.

Yep, typical of me. I know.

Sure thing mate, any particular reason for the nomination (to show of his accomplishments throughout the year, which may persuade more people to vote for him)?

Edit, gonna be pretty busy over the weekend, so I'll update this when I can.

Again like i said in your other topic for the Golf section you could add Tiger Woods winning the US Open with injures.

This is equally as good as the other, if not, better.

Again, i would suggest some people but i cant be bothered finding bios.

There are some wrestlers and NFL'ers i'd like to add.

I've added Vanilla Shakes, Runeys and Hodgeys inclusions into the first post, but I don't think I'm going to add Tiger Woods into the gold section because what Hodgey has said is only describing one performance. So, for now, I'm going to put Tiger Woods into the 'Other notables' section. Hodgey, has Tiger Woods acheived anything else as well as his open win this year? That might get him into the 'golf' section?

Stefan, yeah this is still nominations, until approximately 1st December, when the voting will start, or unless I deem it necessary to begin voting. At this rate it looks like it's going to take a few days longer, but that's no problem.

Cheers for the comments everybody, I hope this topic will be a big success. And !!GameCH33TA!!, I would appreciate your participation in this, if you don't want to provide a paragraph of information on a sports person, you don't have to, although it will be efficient come the voting stages.

Kaka has done literally nothing this year to deserve to be included on that list.

My Nomination

Sir Alex Ferguson

Coach of Manchester United, this year led them to a consecutive Premier League Title, and their second European Cup in 9 years. Built the club up completely from a team who went 26 years without the title to the Dominant Force in England over the last 16 years. It is very difficult to explain just how much of the success, wealth and worth of Manchester United is down to this man, but the club owes him an enormous debt (even bigger than the one to the banks). Contributed far, far more than people who take far more credit, like Ronaldo, who I consider unlikely to achieved anything like the heights he has reached without Ferguson's guiding hand. He has received a knighthood but the award of GTA Forums Sports Person of the Year 2008 would surely be the pinnacle for him, and it is truly deserved.

Anyway i think Manny Pacquiao should definetly be added to the list for becoming a five weight champion and becoming the best pound for pound boxer this year.

I agree with runey's nomination of Evgeni Malkin. He held the Penguins together when Sidney Crosby was injured last season, and showed everybody that Sid's not the only superstar on that team. By the way, flicko, you put him in the wrong category.

I myself would like to nominate Professional skateboarder Danny Way. On his second run in the Big Air competition as he was coming down from 25 feet above the ramp, which itself is 30+ feet, he hung his legs up on the coping...

I'd like to nominate Rocco Mediate for his performance in the 2008 US Open. He was an old bum and success was few and far between, but he pushed Tiger Woods all the way to 18 extra holes. The US open is the only tourney that does the 18 hole playoff, and if they had less, Mediate would have won his first major.

Tiger is already mentioned, but I'd like to mention him because there were two or three decisive strokes (and one impossible putt) that won that tournament for him, and he had a crap knee the entire time.

Right, up to now I've added everybody's nominations into the first post, and if you have already read what I've posted in the other topic, you'll be aware that I'm not going to start he voting process until approximately 10th December, depending on how much I can get on here over the coming week.

Thanks to everybody who has participated thus far, much appreciated. icon14.gif

@flicko: Chris Jericho from the WWE was submitted by me, not Hodgey icon14.gif

Here is some stats on him i found:

Plus he's been playing great so far this season.

So give us a reason this year, not last year. tounge.gif

Sorry about the name mix up !!GameCH33TA!!, it's all sorted now, and I've added your information in.

Jay and GTA3Rockstar, I'd stick my neck out as far as saying that to an extent I agree with you, but I'm trying to get a variety of the most popular sports discussed about on GTAF into here, and The Universal Wrestling topic happens to be pinned at the top of the page, which is why it shall remain where it is.

We all have our opinions on sports, so its all good here. biggrin.gif

Anyways, I would put in Peter Eastgate from Denmark for winning the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. He became the youngest to ever win the main event and bring in a whopping $9million.

I've added him mate. Perhaps his feats could also be nominated for the sports performance of the year as well?

Of course, he did beat out 6,844 players. icon14.gif

Bojan Krkic should get a mention, considering he broke 2 records and came second in another:

  • Becoming second youngest Champions League goalscorer ever
  • Scoring the most goals in a debut season (La Liga)
  • Becoming Spain's youngest ever player by quite a margin
Not to mention his performances (from what I've seen) throughout their poor season, especially against Man Utd.

And look at this:

Despite he said he didn't mean to do it.

For Tennis I'd like to suggest Andy Murray. His improvement since Wimbledon has been incredible and I really think he can push on next year to win a grand slam. icon14.gif
