Gta Guy 108
Okay, my computer is a laptop, so it doesn't have as much space to run GTA IV, so I thought if I bought a external hard drive, that would hold 100 gig or so using a usb, would it still run IV and other things too? I am not for sure..
PestilenceJM
Hmm i dont know that either, maybe google can help. After google: If your a freak, check out this page about running apps from usb: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/execute_apps_off_sd Else go on google and search for "running games on external harddrives"... youll find enough info!!! TruXter
Yes, but be sure read time is going to be crappy.. get a fast external hard disk, but the usb only reads so fast.
Rickzu
It will run, but load times will be a lot longer and you might experience slowdowns every now and then. Just delete some old stuff or get a another HDD. External HDDs were never meant for running games (or even installing software for that matter)

Technically it'll likely work, but run like a beaten whore. Move stuff from lkaptop top external and install GTA to your internal. But before you go through the trouble, are you srue your specs meet teh required?
JasonThummel
You should never run anything directly off an external hard drive. I destroyed two external drives cause I kept running movies off of it.
vachon644
I ran an USB2 HDD for about three years now and I haven't got the slightlyest problem. The speed is even much faster than my 5400 (Laptop)! So, get a good brand and go for it. Don't listen them trolls.

It's not a problem with the brand, it's usb 2.0...it simply is slower than internal HDDs, no way to get around it.

The only reason why I even want one is for IV, I deleted alot of stuff, and My total free space is around 15.

Anyway, if you need to clean up your PC a bit, try WinDirStat, it does a map of your HDD where you can spot the big files and the big folders. It's pretty awsome. I will do a map of my HDD to post here. Edit : There you go guys. Edited November 28, 2008 by vachon644

themerchant8
If your laptop has only 37 gigs of HDD space It's probably too old to run GTA 4 anyways...
Rickzu
Not on a laptop. Yeah on a laptop, it's the same usb 2.0, regardless if it's a desktop or a laptop
mast
I dont know what the guys who say you can't run it are talking about...I'm running all my games off of an external USB drive on my laptop and its working perfectly fine. On games that I've had both on the internal and external HDs, I notice absolutely no differences in loading/general speed at all. And this is USB 2 (which hogs cpu/bus more), not Firewire. I'll run GTA4 off of my external HD. If I encounter any problems, I'll install it on my internal HD and see if there's any difference. But I don't think there will be any. Its not a old mac if that's what you mean . I got it in 2006, its a Dell Inspiron.

Yeah on a laptop, it's the same usb 2.0, regardless if it's a desktop or a laptop The laptop I am talking about has 5 years now. I don't use it so much often since I've got my gaming rig but I did play on it for a couple of years with USB and I didn't notice ANY differences. In fact, I think the USB was faster since the laptop's HDD was constantly used for swap. (512 mb of ram pain).
Wis3boi
I have a WD 500gb external USB HDD and run most of my games off of it, flawlessly. No framerate drops, max details, load times are same as my C: drive.

ayushisrocking
its a Dell Inspiron. which Dell Inspiron? i don't think a 2006 notebook, specially an Inspiron notebook would handle GTA4... just tell us ur specs please.
Gta Guy 108
I have looked at the specs for IV, I am sure that my pc can handle it.
GTA_XP
Yh right. You havent posted your specs. But anyway, 37GB is really really too slow for GTA IV! I dont think you meet the reqs because these days most laptops have 80/120/160/250/320/500/640 GB HDD My old laptop only have 30GB and it can never and never play these day games! Believe me, if you install windows apps and gta4, you ll get slow performance,
amisnaru
I find it hard to believe that you have a 40gb (rounded up) hard drive in a laptop that has the specs to run GTA IV. Unless you put the hard drive in yourself?
Gta Guy 108
Like I said before, I am pretty sure my computer will handle IV. I have just bought a 500 gig external hard drive, I guess I will just have wait until the 2nd and see how it turns out.

Gta Guy 108
I don't think there is really any reason to except for people wanting to know, the only things I know is that I have the XP service pack 3, and I have a core duo processor. I am not sure of my graphics card, it is nvidia I THINK. I have installed Vice City on the external HD and it works perfectly fine.

I bought a pretty decent laptop at the start of 2007 and it only has 128 MB video of memory; and is probably much better than your Inspiron. I doubt it'll even run it at minimum settings; and even if you do manage to get it running, it'll be so slow and choppy, you'll do yourself a favor by building/buying another PC. riahc4
load times are same as my C: drive. Why the hell do people make up sh*t like this? It is impossible that the load times on a IDE drive are the same as a USB drive. USB 3 might close the gap a bit but still wont...
