It's pretty common in large urban areas and I'm sure anonymous internet hookups have been a large contribution to craigslist's success. Now I could be a complete nob or creep, but I tend to find it easier (and kind of more thrilling) really to meet people online (part of the problem is most of my day is spent with persons a decade or more older than myself). Sure you have to sift through a lot of facades and fatties trying to pass as "voluptuous" or "curvy" but in my experience you can connect with the odd young vixen who feels a little alienated by their surroundings. I think preying after people online is a disturbing habit, but I see nothing wrong with throwing yourself out there and seeing what happens. I was a member of the elite who once thought that those that looked for love on the anarchy of the web were complete social retards. But after a particularly bad breakup and a general disinterest in the local bar/club scene I decided to give it a shot and ended up with good results. I was in a decent relationship that lasted about half a year and ended on mutually beneficial terms. After another break, I decided to give it another go and I started to see the other side of the spectrum. So my question is; do any of you have any funny/tragic/embarrassing tales of online love gone awry? I'll kick it off. I responded to a craigslist ad for a girl who claimed to be 18 (i'm 19). She said her friend bailed on their friday night plans and she wanted someone to go to a 80's night with. I responded, we exchange pictures, a few witty emails, blah blah blah, all in all everything seems legit. So I show up at the club, stand at the bar and look all around for her. After about 20 minutes or so, I figure she didn't show and I decide to meet some friends somewhere else when all of a sudden I get a tap on my shoulder. I turn around and am greeted with a huge beaming smile complete with a set of braces. I swear this girl didn't look older than 15 years old. "I was waiting for you to notice me!" she says I smile awkwardly and try to assess the situation and remember the local laws on age of consent. We talk for a while and she seems pretty down to earth, a lot more mature than I'd imagine any 15 yr old would be, and besides if she wasn't of age how the f*ck did she get past the bouncer? So I calm down, we talk some more, and then I ask if she wants to grab a drink. She kind of shys up a bit, hands me a $10 bill and instructs me to go to the bar to grab us both drinks. I get back, and continue our conversation but I keep noticing irregularities about the girl. She claimed to have gone to a local university but didn't know any of the eateries, pubs and public places on campus that I mentioned. She mentioned she was stressing over her exams coming up in January (uni exams are always in december here) and she kept prattling on about her friends and telling me these stories that seemed really juvenile. To top it off, she was drinking me under the table, every time she got booze in her hand she inhaled within a minute or two and she absolutely refused to go up to the bar with me. In the early days of AOL I would agree with you, internet hookups were kind of like playing Russian roulette with your cock and/or sexual identity. Yeah it's probably a big fat guy with a tiny wiener! I've never had any experience with hook ups from online, but I've definitely met people from facebook/myspace before and they're pretty legit. I have never hooked up with anyone on the internet, but I remember back in 2003, some girl called me up saying that she was my schoolmate and was in love with me. She also said that she knew I already had a girlfriend at that time, but she just wanted to meet me once. So, we decide to meet near a temple that she visits every Tuesday. I stand there for close to 25 minutes but no one shows up. So, I just leave. The next day, she calls me up again saying that I didn't come and she was waiting for me inside the temple. Now I knew she was lieing because I had already checked the inside of the temple. We had a little bit of talk and hung up. After that, I never heard from her again. Btw, the day we decided to meet was April 1, 2003. I still don't know who that girl was and I'm still wondering if I fell for an April Fools joke or what? You dog. They? It was only one girl. I was just curious actually since she told me she was from my school and from the very same batch I studied with. But I didn't know anyone who would have had a crush on me at that time. Not to mention, there were very few girls in my class that I liked (one of them being my ex). No experiences of online dating so far. I don't live in a huge city though, only half a million or thereabouts, so I dunno how much success I'd get if I ever did try it. I had replied to a similar ad like the topic user and never getting a reply totally didnt think twice about it. Then I get a random email asking about me and couldn't figure out where this girl had gotten my email. Ended up meeting her at the mall and taking her out for Jamba Juice for a quick first date and introduction. It was good for short term (especially when she always offered to pay for everything), but the girl became damn near obsessed with me till I broke it off. my first long term girlfriend I met through a site like myspace. But before myspace became the "big" thing of social networking. That turned into a regular relationship where we saw each other every day and was getting pretty serious till she f*cked sh*t up. I also met some girl who took me to the movies and out clubbing. Never saw her again after that, but she has txted me once in a while. This one was weird because I got a random add request on facebook, and the next thing I know she is IMing me on AIM. Although she claimed she didn't know how I got on her AIM buddy list and that I must have contacted her first (which I didn't, and dont do for anyone except family). But I will be honest, the time I spent going on one "date" and then to her bday bash was a ton of fun. Lets just say she didn't mind sharing me with her other 5 friends and our average "introduction" that night consisted of them jumping on me and giving me some of the dirtiest lapdances at a public night club I have taken part in or witnessed. Then again maybe that also had to do with us bumping it in our own private VIP booth with free booze. regardless, I had an awesome night and having brought my friend with me he is convinced I'm the mac-daddy from hooking him up with such a fun night with so many pretty girls. damn, and I've had a few more times similar to these. One girl will actually call me randomly at night and try and talk me into having phone sex, but I'm not game for sh*t like that unless I've met them face to face first. So at least I keep it old school in some sense haha. I'm not trying to sound stuck up or anything, but even though I know a lot of women in my day to day life, many or all of them seem too shy around me to do anything. Even the most outspoken ones of the bunch. I don't know if they find me intimidating or something, but the only time they openly allow themselves to swoon over how attractive, nice, or funny they think I am is when we are partying and they are tipsy or drunk. Otherwise I get the feeling like they feel I'm out of their league or something. So I think I rely partly on internet hook-ups because those girls aren't shy about their feelings, making my life a ton easier as a guy. The strange thing is I did a study on why the hell women would continually go after guys that are the "assholes" and get beat up and what-not. Guess what I discovered? The answer is simple as it is perplexing to the just mentioned issue. Unpredictable and dangerous men are exciting. Yeah, that is correct....the good men may be in wonder why the bad men get most the chicks but the truth is even far more distressing. Women want to be excited in some way, sense or form and are willing to do all the wrong things, if necessary, to find the excitement. So, the advice is simple. Do you ever get bored while alone? If so, it is probrably the company so, change that and you and any female you are with will be much happier. In other words....find a woman who is not bored by the things you like to do and whom doesn't bore you to death witha their interests....find someone who gets excited by some of the same things you do. (other than the obvious sexual interests if you want a relationship that lasts) (This is a serious statement about life and I am not intentionally dogging anyone out.) I met one legitimate girlfriend off of myspace which turned out great for me because she was a fah-reak and was totally down for anything sexually.
