Nomad91
Ok, I'm finally upgrading my computer, just because I want to play some current games like GTA IV, without making every setting to low. So I made a bundle of a motherboard, RAM, and processor, and later, a video card. Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128076 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820134046 Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115132 Graphics Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130383 I am going for a upgrade for under $300. I think this will play GTA IV on console-level settings, right? I am using Windows XP. One question though... I went on the motherboard's site, and it said the processor I selected it compatible with version 6a of the bios, and the bios it comes with is Version 3. Will the processor still work before updating the bios? I have compatible P4 just in case. Also, will my XP cd-key still work on my new system, or do I need a new one? Jim
I obviously recommend stepping it up when it comes to the motherboard and video card ... the motherboard especially, but this should pull of minimal speculations for running GTA IV. The CPU is just enough, the RAM is just enough, and the video card is cutting it very close and will be iffy. Like I said, you're cutting it very close with this setup, but if you're that desperate to play GTA IV on the PC on the budget you are on, take the chance. May I suggest stepping it up a bit to getting a 9600GT instead? The 9600GT will pull off what's recommended for a video card.
Picolini
Definitely worth the $5 more for the 9600GT over the 95. Also, spend a tiny bit more on the mobo and get one that takes 800Mhz RAM. This one should do, I'd think. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128338 It'll only be a tiny bump in price as you can save $$ on the RAM, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820227189 I'd personally try and get a stronger processor. But that's probably the best you'll get in that price range. If you can squeeze out a $45 more, you can get a MUCH MUCH quicker E8400 dual core Intel. The CPU you've picked is by no means bad, but you can get the E8400 for just $45 more. Of course, budget rules all, so get what you can. Oh, and hope I'm not bursting your bubble, but make sure you've got a strong enough power supply for this. The 9600GT will require you to have a 400W PSU. I do believe if you bought a retail Windows XP it allows you to install on up to 3 PC's. If it's a prebuilt PC then I don't think you can transfer it. Nomad91
Thanks guys, I've revised it a bit. Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128338 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820134117 Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115038 New Power Supply, also: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817371019 Yay or Nay? Jim
Well, it's a step up from what you had in your original post, but that power supply looks a bit cheap. Though, I think you'll be fine with the setup you have now. Don't be expecting to be playing the game on high, but you'll be playing it at around medium, I would assume. That's good considering it's a budget buy.
Nomad91
Maybe throw in a 8800GT? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814133205
Jim
Yeah, that 8800GT would do just as much as the 9600GT. The 8800GTs are known for being very good when it comes to gaming and the 9600GT is pretty much a remake of the 8800GT with a new name.
Nomad91
Cool! Thanks! And my total for the upgrade is less than $400.
