GTA3Freak-2001
This isn't regarding the typical scenario of older games not running well or at all on Vista due to their age in case that's what you thought. For some reason almost every game I install on Vista will run from anywhere from 3 to 15 mins and then seemingly freeze(no weird artifacts or graphic corruption just the image freezing) and then sends my monitor into standby, the music/sound still plays but for all purposes the system has frozen or become unresponsive. I have to restart. You might point out something wrong with my hardware but the thing is when I boot into my XP partition and install the same games I have no problems whatsoever! I've tried messing around with drivers, installing the latest, using one of those driver cleaning programs but the problem still persists. I've thought maybe it is related to my video card and only Vista seems to pick it up. The reason I say this is, my 8800GT has a custom bios installed due to my motherboard not supporting the backwards compatibility of PCIe 2.0 cards in 1.1 slots. The Bios puts the card into PCIe 1.1 mode, perhaps that causes Vista to chuck a fit or something. I would like to not have the inconvenience of booting into XP every time I want to game. I am running Vista Ultimate with the latest 178.24 Forceware drivers, everything system wise seems to be fine, temps of my 8800GT are fairly average, no real indications of hardware problems. I am at a loss as to what to do here. Any ideas?
Star-Lord
Hello! GTA3Freak, Happy Thanksgiving. did you check your audio drivers.
Kaj.
Hello! GTA3Freak, Happy Thanksgiving. did you check your audio drivers. He's Australian, you clot. Just because the US celebrates something doesn't mean the whole world does. And why on earth do you suggest checking audio drivers? He clearly states that his audio continues to function when the video/everything else cuts out. As for Freakeh, I don't have much to tell you. Maybe check out forums for the manufacturer of your vid card, they may have some more info on the subject.
Saget
Hmm. The whole "sends my monitor into standby" seems very much like a video card issue. Is there any way you can get another video card on your computer to test how everything runs? |DeviantArt|Flickr|YouTube|#amf|
Cursed
My monitor used to go into stand-by during bootup after I installed my 8800GT to Vista. It just turned out to be a driver issue in the end.
GTA3Freak-2001
Yeah I've got a 7600GT here somewhere, might give it a go when I can be bothered. I know its driver related, the error logs indicate the "nvd4.dll or similar stopped working" which is why I've tried the last half a dozen nvidia drivers hoping that one of them will solve the problem. I'll have a poke around Galaxy's website, dunno if they have a forum or anything.
Democrab
Latest drivers are 180.48 I think, get those and install ALL updates you see in windows update, just to be sure.
GTA3Freak-2001
Wow that was fast, I only just updated to the 178.24's not long ago. I shall install the latest then!
Drag_Drift
Alternatively, you can try using tweaked drivers. It has solved problems with my older PC when I installed the 7800.
