I got mugged

The attitude of "give them all your money, don't fight" is the reason why there are so many muggers, if all they've got to do it flash a knife and you'll immediately surrender all your belongings then it's not wonder they're happy to mug you. If someone with a knife tried to mug me I would headbutt him, boot him in the bollocks, stamp on his head and then steal his knife and laugh at him. If everyone would rather risk their lives than give up their belongings no-one would have to do either.

Yeah that mentality might have worked 40-50 years ago but it really isn't like that anymore. In other words criminals now really don't give a sh*t, it's not the fact that people surrender to muggers it's the fact that the the law enforcement system is currently a joke.

You really believe every mugger who pulls a knife is willing to kill his victim? There's a huge difference between not giving a sh*t and being ready to take someone's life for 100.

You're remark on how you would deal with a mugger did make me laugh though, no one is impressed it just made everyone think you're a bit of a tit...

Of course it wasn't entirely serious but if everyone did have an attitude like that then there would certainly be far less Muggings. The problem is that very few are willing to take this risk because people are too small minded and Selfish to see the long term consequences of giving all their stuff without putting up a fight.

I'm starting to doubt you've ever been mugged.

Do I really think everyone with a knife is really willing to stab someone for $100?

No.

Do I really think everyone with a knife is really willing to stab someone because they've pulled a knife on them, and don't know what the other person is capable of?

Yes.

The world would be full of a lot more muggings that ended in fatal stabbings if everyone stuck to your mentality.

The problem is that people still walk around with hundreds of dollars, designer watches and clothes, scrolling through their iPods, without any regard as to where they are and whether they should be flaunting such things. Would you walk out of a horse-racing track waiving your reward in the air? Would you walk out of a bank with your paycheck all in cash? No, so why walk through a bad part of town with your personal belongings?

OK, well in that case I expect you either live in a seriously depraved area or don't know much about killing. Muggers expect an easy ride once they flash a knife, someone headbutting them or crippling them by kneeing them in the groin/eye gouging would, more often than not IMO, lead to the victim at least escaping.

The world would be full of a lot more muggings that ended in fatal stabbings if everyone stuck to your mentality.

I disagree, how many criminals are going to mug someone if they know the person they're about to attack will stand and fight? If they know they're in all likelihood going to have to kill their victim before they get their monies then less people will mug because a) People find it difficult to kill and b) It is a lot more difficult to escape a murder charge than a robbery charge.

No, so why walk through a bad part of town with your personal belongings?

a) It isn't practical to leave all one's belongings in a safe place while walking through a bad part of town, it is very practical to carry money in plastic form, or pay via check, or put money won from horse-racing in one's pocket.

b) Why the f*ck should I have to store all my stuff somewhere because someone wants to mug me?

c) The problem is the motherf*ckers who would go out and rob someone, the existence of which is aided by selfishness and narrow mindedness.

I've never been mugged, and hopefully I wont. But whenever I go out, I have to say I'm usually pretty paranoid about getting something stolen from me. I usually just carry my phone ( which isn't worth anything and I'd only be pissed because I have numbers in there that I couldn't get back ) but other than that I only carry about 5 quid with me. If I carry more than that, I'm in a group of like 8+ because I'll be going out somewhere.

I was in a situation a couple years ago where 2 of my friends got mugged right infront of me and my other friend while we were talking ( we didn't even notice what was going on until after the guys had left with whatever ) but it wasn't good. I know it messed up my 2 friends who did get mugged for a week or so, but they got over it.

Seriously, I got punched, had my phone stolen, etc...

Pussy.

Agree.

Honestly, maybe you should work out or something, learn some fighting moves.

People who get robbed are usually the ones that the robbers see as weak.

It seems like getting mugged with a knife is small potatoes compared to a gun. Why not just run away? Like Sag said, they probably aren't willing to devote much time to you, so they wouldn't give chase.

Hmm, that depends. If they surprise you with a knife within a meter or two, they can probably still cut you if you try to run. Especially if you have to turn around first. Or, if they have a gun, how close are they? Did they pull it outside of two meters thinking they had a range advantage? Are they holding it all sideways and up over their head like they saw in a Fiddy video? If yes on the last two, one might have a better chance running from a guy with a gun which he doesn't know how to use. wink.gif

Knife guy might be more likely to chase when the primordial predator/prey instincts kick in too.

I've never been mugged though, so this is a mostly academic exercise. So, yea, don't try this at home, consult an expert first, your mileage may vary, etc..

Can I ask, were you mugged by a woman? I'm only asking this because you called the mugger a "bitch" and I wasn't sure if it was applicable because of their gender or because you were simply mad at them and wanted to sound tough. I want to know this so I can tell if I should "lol" or not at the fact that you were mugged by a woman.

Please let me know. Thanks.

That reminds me of this reconstruction video of a young man getting mugged at an underpass by a girl gang and they beat him up till he was unconscious and then the ringleader pulled down her knickers, squatted over him and then pissed on him. It was kinda sickening actually. mercie_blink.gif

I'm sorry, but let me ask; have you ever been mugged? It's natural not to want to give all your things away to some lifeless sh*t you don't know. But I'm not as dumb as Eddie, if they flashed a knife I would give them everything they wanted.

Yes, I have had people try to mug me, twice. Point is moot.

As is previously stated, an item can be replaced, your life or ability to walk cannot.

I don't go down without a fight, ever, but if someone is going to mug you, or me, it's safer just to give in. How many times a week do we hear on the news about some teenager in london stabbed to death for defending themselves.

Or the man who told thugs to get off his car, so they kicked him to death.

Times have changed. It's simply too dangerous to stand up for yourself unless you have a gun.

I've been mugged several times, mostly by gang members here in L.A. Luckily never have I been hit or shot. Its just "Where you from? What you got?" that's it. I remember when I was with my tagging crew, and we saw about 4 bloods, at first we where saying to ourselves "we can handle this sh*t". But once we got closer, they all spread out and it was about 15 of them. They just searched us, and that was it. They also gave us a warning not to tag in their hood.  confused.gif It gets scary, but after it happens alot, you know what to do.

I'm surprised you got off with just a simple warning not to tag in their area. If they actually thought you were from a rival L.A. gang and were tagging up their hood, it should have been a lot worse than that. You remember about 6 months ago or so, those string of random bus stop shootings going on around here in L.A? Just random rival gang members running into each other while waiting for public transportation and having shootouts. A few innocent people (including kids) got killed because of it.

Lucky, man. Tagging in bad parts of L.A. seems to be an extremely retarded concept to me.

Yeah I agree, its not wise to tag in their hood, but its very easy to get out. And Gangs know there's lots of taggers as well. Not only that, but they know some of us carry guns, so they watch out.

I was mugged in 2001. I had my head basically caved in with a metal pole and spent some time in hospital. A lot of skin was hanging off my skull, and they weren't sure initially if I was going to need plastic surgery to hide the scarring (I didn't in the end).

I don't even think my mugging was particularly bad, and merely getting punched is a bit of a non-event.

Well, with me, it's the old "if I'm going down I'm taking you f*ckers with me" mentality. People know I'm a bit a headcase who couldn't give two sh*ts if I'm in the local A&E for making a stand. I carry around a brick of a phone, and my house keys. And I get hassle twice every week if not more. Do I get jumped? Nope. Lord knows people try but once some (not all, I have had my head caved in plenty) they see me fists bunched and a snarl, it looks like I'm jumping them. Actually, the other night somebody asked me for all my possesions. Did I give them up? Did I f*ck. My posessions are MINE. 'Tis my logic.

You may call me an idiot etc. but everyone will react to a situation differently. Mine is to throw all caution to the wind and jump in head first. sh*t heals is my favorite phrase tounge.gif

stuff

Okay, sorry to bring it to this point...

How many times have you been mugged? For that matter, how many times have you been on the end of a knife, held be a shaky, anxious person? How many times have you nearly been cut just for making a slight move for your wallet?

The idea that muggers expect someone to just be a push over and give them their money is somewhat true, but you also have to realize that they're carrying the knife because they're also worried that the person they're mugging has a weapon or will retaliate. If you attempt to attack someone with a knife, believe me, you're going to wind up on the bad end of the exchange. It doesn't take much to open up an 18" gash in your side, and it doesn't take long for six pints of blood to flow out of it and kill you. Comparatively, how many times do you think you'll need to hit this guy before he relinquishes control?

I don't know how many situations like this you've been in, or how many people you've head-butted cold, but I'm more inclined not to even fight someone with my fists. People who walk around thinking they can handle this at any time are the uninitiated who've never really met their match in a situation like this. It's not a about "skill" or how well you can think, it's really up to chance. You might have the most powerful punch this side of the Northern Hemisphere, but does it really mean sh*t if the first time you throw it, he dodges it and stabs you in the chest? It's a 50/50 chance that it will connect, and almost 100% certainty that it won't knock him out before that knife enters your flesh.

In situations like this, people don't think, they react. A guy with a knife will react with that knife. Any reaction with a knife is not good for your health.

As far as leaving your valuables not being practical: Do you really need your wallet, iPod, and nice watch to walk to your friends? You might need to take your laptop to work with you, but do you need it if you're just walking somewhere else? It's all about context. The best thing to do to protect your belongings and your life is to choose when you're going to take one of your belongings with you.

If you're fool-hardy enough to want to risk your life for material positions, then go for it. My bet is that you'll wind up feeling how sh*tty a knife wound is and reconsider whether your $400 iPod is worth the $1,500 hospital visit.

same thing happened to me, but I carry a gun (marine training) pretty much all the time and I pretended like I was pulling out my wallet but instead pulled it out then took him in a full-nelson and held him down until this nice guy at the bus stop called the cops.

I know what you mean though, it's an erie empty feeling inside. You wonder why these bad things happen and if you were meant to witness this for some sort of epiphany. It made me stay up most of the night thinking. But after his 2 weeks incarcerated I contacted him through his probation officer and took him out to lunch. This was 3 years ago, and I convinced him to go get his GED and we would go pick up lady's on the weekend, then one day I learned I was being deployed for my second tour of duty in Iraq. We kept in touch just about every week. He would help my wife out (who was pregnant then). But then just a few days after a special assignment, I got a skype message, and it was my wife. Sean was killed in a drive-by. Someone he once owed finally caught up with him. We were best friends, he even went to Israel with me when I went to serve as a volunteer security force for a few months. He tagged along to learn about many religions simultaneously because he regretted not having a religious background.

Wow, well I guess I got a bit off topic. He was a great guy though. Moral of the story, Friends can be found in even the worst places.

Advice for you? - Don't fret, everything will always righten up, and if they caught one, they will most likely catch the rest. And don't forget, these were just your belongings. Sure, they gave you a visual of what you work for every day (cuz you bought these things...I assume)(and you work to buy them...I assume) but be thankful you have shelter through the night, and a job that will easily return your losses in a few months, and kind people like me.

I wasn't afraid when it happened to me. Marine training is intense, and they teach basic weaponry skills like using what's around you, all the way to survival hand-to-weapon combat. It was more of intuition on my part. I remeber training though, that was wild. We would fight guys who we knew were in training, but they would jump out of no where and you had to fight them until they were down. We were taught so well, by the end I could sense an attack before it happened, but when Jack tried to mug me, it was a complete surprise. That's why I think I decided to contact him, because it was obvious he wasn't mugging me for no reason, but that he obviously meant no real harm and just realized it wasa last resort.

He told me once how it wasn't that he picked me out because of what I was wearing or because something about me said "ohh rich!" But that he saw how I helped this old lady cross the street a couple blocks back, and something in him clicked and told him to pick me. I thik it's because he knew that even jail would be better than where he was now, and I think if he was here now, he'd agree.

I've been the target of an attempted mugging twice. The first time I said "no" and the poor f*ck was so confused that he just kinda walked away with this sad face. The second time some guy tried to put a cell phone in my back and pretend it was a gun. I was reaching for my wallet when a friend of mine hit him with a brick.

I mean, I like to think I'm a tough guy. But inside 21 feet, the guy with the knife usually has the advantage if he gets the drop on you. I don't like getting stabbed. It f*cking HURTS. Brandishing a gun is useful if you intend on using it, but I'd rather cancel my credit cards than go to court for three weeks and spend $30,000 to prove I was justified in shooting some scummy f*ck. As much as it hurts me to say it, sometimes it's better to just acquiesce or run.

I can understand how bad it must feel though. But, as has been said earlier, $200 is not a big enough amount to risk your life for it, unless you're extremely poor which I don't think you're since you can afford the internets. Whenever in such a situation, stay as calm as you can. The less you panic, the lesser are your chances of getting hurt. Just don't try to act like a bigshot and put yourself in harm's way. It's just not worth it.

I've never been mugged, but I've had similar confrontations. Some drop-out fag tried to take my Z for a joy-ride once when I left it running while talking to friends. I opened the door and he just froze up and acted like it was a joke.

The interior design saved the car.

"I couldn't find the door lock," he said like it was all a prank. I drug him by the collar out of the car and since he was surrounded by my friends, he ran off as soon as he feet touched the pavement.

My insurance doesn't cover theft if you leave the keys in it, so it would have been like handing over $25,000.

I was only "mugged: once and it was violent. Just a friends friend took some sh*t from me and my brother, and if my brother didn't swing on him I wasn't going to. Me and my brother are by no means small, and this guy wasn't huge, but he was in gangs and sh*t so that time probably wouldn't have been the end of it.

@Sags, that f*cking sucks man.

I really don't feel afraid of people very much. While I'm not a tall guy, 5' 7 or 8" tall, I weight a good 300lbs. I'm told I carry it well and can look pretty intimidating when I've got just a blank face on. I think that helps people stay away from me. I'm not in an incredibly dangerous area, but it's not too safe. Plenty of gang activity and sh*t. I just know where I can and can't go. But really, even if I walked through the worst part of town (where I lived for about a year, actually) I wouldn't get any trouble. When I know I'm in a bad situation I flex up, show I'm ready for anything, and keep my awareness up for sudden attacks. Kick to the balls, it's what it's all about. Even if it's a group of 5 guys and they see you completely annihilate their friends nut sack as he approaches you they'll usually feel worried about theirs and back the f*ck off. I try to keep my mind set on intimidation, really. You scare the sh*t out of them, they won't f*ck with you.

Well I live near my uni, and the town has quite a lot of gang problems. A few weeks ago, a gang just shot a random kid in the head as part of some initiation. Most of the time, if I'm out during the night I travel with a group. Usually, there are several dozen people out on the weekend for several blocks because of the party scene. I guess I'm lucky I haven't been mugged. 'Muggings' aren't that common here, there are far more break-ins and vandalism. If I were in a situation where someone demanded something, I would give it to them. I usually only carry my wallet and phone, and would rather get away than risk being hurt.
