I Want 360; should i risk it?

I want to get an XBOX 360, but I'm afraid of it getting the "red ring of death" or any other problem. The reason I want the 360 over the PS3 is so i can play Fable 2 and get the DLC for GTA IV.

My questions are these: is the XBOX 360 still faulty? Has the RRoD been fixed yet?

I'm willing to bet you won't get a RRoD now, its not entirely gone, but the 360's have the cooler CPUs and better GPU heatsinks, I'd say its alright to risk it, worst thing that happens is you have to RMA it.

whats RMA?

lol I'm paranoid because 3 of my buddies have had the RRoD. Is there any official statement from Microsoft saying that the faultiness has been reduced?

They give you a huge warranty now, its like buying anything else. Theres always a chance.

Just get one if thats what you want, if it f*cks up, take it back and get another.

Just don't put it on the carpet.

I've had mine for over a year and it's still standing.

Hmm.... Well, I still want to see something official from Microsoft, but google just isn't giving me much. F*ck it. I'll try my luck, but not without an extended warranty...

Not content with having a whole topic devoted to this 'issue,' you decide to post in the Official Xbox 360 Topic.

Surely one place is enough. confused.gif

You get a 3 year warranty from the RRoD anyway, which protects you for, lo and behold, 3 years.

Yes, I did post over there, and I semi-apologized before asking. Get over it. Plus, you're the only response I got, and I wanted more than just one.

3 years, eh? Not too bad. Should be enough. Thanks for telling me that.

I've made my mind up....

Get one of the models from 2007 and newer, they are less likely to get the red ring than the older models from 2005. Keep it in a ventilated area, on a hard surface, and don't leave it on for too many hours and you should be fine.

Well, they have introduced 60GB models from August onwards, not sure if they have anything other than the HDD changed from the 20GB model though

Creed Bratton

Just get an Elite, and read the instruction before you place it on some awkward place. A lot of people don't read instructions and then they f*ck up without knowing it.

Yeah get one. RRoD aren't heard much of anymore, I'm pretty sure Microsoft fixed that. Plus there's a one eyar warrantly from the company (that's not the extened one) which should give oyu back up if you Xbox doesn't work properly. I've had mine since July 08 and it works liek a charm smile.gif I aslo purchased the intercooler fan for mine to make sure it doesn't over heat.

A friend of mine has had 2 360's already. The first one he bought brand new and got RRoD in less than a year. Sent it to M$ and got a refurbished one. Another 2 years later and RRoD'd again. Now he's on his third one.

heres basically the red light rules..

1. DO NOT place ur 360 vertical like in all the advertisements it is, this blocks the MAIN air vents.

2. keep in a cool place, when not using the 360 ( say youve gone for lunch) keep it off.

3. DO NOT move the 360 in any way when a CD is in rotation inside, this was grind away the disk and the laser.

4. try to avoid these "360 cooling units" you can buy, these just higher your chances of getting red lights.

with all of the 4 steps above im not sure about more there is like a 99% chance u wont get red lights with the new models of 360's.

both me and my friend bought 360's the same week in january 2008 he got the eltie i got the premium he was the only one to get red lights and this was a just a program failure (random errors with the 360 and game interacting cause this but is extremely rare).

thats it really.

Be aware that the Red Ring of Death is not caused due to the console overheating. Because the cause of the RRoD is the heat sync chip breaking off, rapid heating and cooling of the console is your biggest risk.

Example: Don't play for half an hour, turn it off for half an hour, play for half an hour, etc. Overheating is still a risk, though.

Well I can't say either way whether or not you would get RRoD but I will say from personal experience I have had 2 RRoD's where I had to return the Xbox to MS for them to send a repaired console back and both RRoD's were within 9 months of each other.

Thanks for some of the tips in here. I now know that I should keep the 360 Horizontal, I hope it wont have any cooling issues:

It will be sitting Horizontal where the video and Freeview box currently are (They will be gone).

They most certainly are dead technology, considering it hasn't played a tape since about 2003. I remember getting that new one for Christmas because I had a faulty 1980's one before that really was reliable. Anyway, I don't think it will be staying when I get my new TV. We have a spare DVD player under a sofa, but I don't watch DVDs either, and when I do I just use a console or PC.

Anyway, do you think that the 360 will get enough ventilation there, the cabinet is about 10cm away from the wall, and my bedroom usually sticks to a temperature of 17c - 20c.

I've had my xbox for nearly a year now, I had a slight over-heating problem after the first month but that sorted itself out and I've had no problems since.

Most of the xbox horror stories were from PS3 fanboys anyway.

In my opinion you should get a ps3 because it's alot sexier and from what i've heard the engine is also better. It's also very sexy in white, but it's still your choice. I was choosing between a 360 and ps3 1 week+ ago, and I bought a white 80gb ps3 and I didn't regret it. It's really sexy.

He made this topic because he's scared his 360 will die if he gets one, he didn't ask if it was sexier than the PS3.

Leave your fanboyism at the door.

In my opinion you should get banned because it's alot sexier and from what i've heard the engine is also better. It's also very sexy in yellow stars, but it's still your choice. I was choosing between a banned and b& 1 week+ ago, and I bought a 5, yellow starred ban and I didn't regret it. It's really sexy.

Yes, you do get that annoying.

OP: It should be fine, if mines fine in a 30c room that is full of clutter where it is (Can block rear fans) yours will be perfectly fine there.

Well it was my opinion, I wasn't being a fan boy, I just think that a ps3 is a better buy than a 360 if he doesn't want to risk it. I did say he can choose for himself right? I was just giving him my opinion, honestly, I don't even understand why people get so worked up over which console is better. I've given him my opinion and he is free to choose what console he wants to buy.

true, but I think he wants to play fable 2 and get the gta iv dlc, that's why he is asking about the 360.

So

Go for the 360,you will have a heck of a great time with it,these new models aren't that prone to the horrible RRoD anymore. + there are other great 360 exclusives, really a great console!.

Anyways, talking about xbox 360,the new NXE is awesome!

anyone noticed that if you shake your avatar's head violently,he gets kind of dazed. Also the option to install the games on your hard drive is quite a nice feature,no more loud sounds from the dvd player, yay!

Not everyone gets a PS3 though. I would have chosen a PS3 over the 360 a few months ago. A lot of my friends have Xbox Live (I don't know anyone with a PS3 other than my Uncle). I'm just happy to be having a console, since the PS3 is a lot more expensive than a 360, and despite your opinion on looks, I wouldn't call the 360 ugly (White is good nowadays thanks to the iPod). Plus, the 360 controller feels much better. My opinion has been changed on consoles.

The fact is, Xbox's have improved reliability as long as you treat them properly. May I just add, all my friends who have Xbox's have had the RRoD, but they all have 2005/06 models (Well, now they have reconditioned ones from Microsoft). One of them is asking for it really, he has his Xbox next to an electric heater with no ventilation space (He has had 2 RRoD's in the last two days tounge.gif).

Anyway, go for it, if you do have a problem then you can always RMA it.
