The advantages and disadvantages of installing GTA

Hey guys, I downloaded the NXE update, and i wanted to tell you the advantages and disadvantages of the NXE update.

Advantages:

It doesn't take as long to load.

The xbox is so much quieter.

It doesn't read the disc, only for verification, which means scratched gta's will work perfectly.

If for some reason, your gta won't install, e.g too scratched, then you can borrow a friends, install that, and use the original one.

^ That's what i did and it worked absoloutly perfect.

Disadvantages:

It takes up so much space on the hard drive.

The pop-in is worse than ever, buildings and trees will just magically appear.

Although the loading is faster, it isn't THAT noticable.

As you can see, i can't think of as many disadvantages as advantages, which means the NXE update/Installing it to your hard drive is the way to go! Long live November the 19th!

I would've expected it to be the other way around sad.gif

Oh well, informative post. Thanks smile.gif

I seriously don't know what you're talking about when it comes to the pop in. I've experienced little pop in which isn't a surprise when it comes to both consoles. Maybe you should try cleaning the disk.

The "taking up too much space" is more a disadvantage of the average size of the 360's 20GB hard drive, and of course if you want the advantage of installing a game to a hard drive you have to expect it to take up space comparable to most PC games once installed.

Are you sure? That shouldn't be so.

How can the pop-in be worse? That makes no sense, unless there's somehow more of a bottleneck with cached data from the hard drive than from the optical drive. Obviously the read speed is faster from the HDD. But, is it possible they put a faster/bigger cache on the DVD than the HDD because they assumed games would play exclusively from the DVD when they designed the hardware?

Personally I don't think the pop-in looks worse, but I am somewhat surprised that it doesn't look any better. Startup load times are better but nothing else seems faster.

Anyway, getting rid of the DVD noise is wonderful. I'm hearing subtle sound in the game I couldn't hear before.

The pop-ins *ARE* actually worse. The idea that installing to the drive would magically make redraws fast is a bit of a misnomer in this case. The hard drive installation feature now available for NXE is an after-the-fact feature. Meaning the way previous games were designed they cached the data onto the hard drive already. Particularly for games that load lots of data on the fly. So what now have is the hard drive reading from two locales, cache and installation data. Essentially what's happening is the hard drive seek speed is being decreased exponentially. As opposed to DVD Drive which can operate at full speed when searching for data to write to cache and the hard drive loading up the cache data to display on screen at full speed. Make sense?

Games that weren't designed with installing to hard drive in mind (read any and all games that were designed but not privy to MSs later update plans) will be hit-or-miss with this feature. It's unfortunate but just the way it is.

On another note, this may be very good reason why DLC content for GTA 4 was delayed. To add in the ability to check if the game is installed to the hard disk and help reduce stress on the hard drive by referring to the cache less often. wink.gif

I know some may still be screaming "NO INSTALLING TO THE HARD DRIVE MAKES IT FASTER, NOW SHUT UP YOU KNOW NOTHING". To that I respond with this link > Bungie's response to poorer performance after installing to Xbox 360 hard drive.. Sure I may not know very much in regards to this issue. But I'm sure Bungie has a clue or two. And I suspect Bungie's issues are not isolated.

Hope I managed to contribute something useful.

I can see Rockstar doing a patch that actually optimizes the game for this feature. This obviously isn't something made for GTAIV, it's just a standard option that no game has been specifically designed to utilize.

I think there's a good chance that the "Lost & Damned" DLC will go live with an update/patch that actually improves this feature on GTAIV. That's a pure guess on my part but I don't think it would be too hard for them to do.

I installed Midnight Club: LA last night, but haven't tried it out yet. I need to clear up a little more space before GTA IV will fit. Then I will probably get a new, bigger HDD so I can put other games on it. I don't really care how much it helps performance of the game, as long as it's not a drastic difference from playing it off the dvd. Having the system be quiet without the disc spinning all the time is what I'm looking forward to. biggrin.gif

EDIT/UPDATE:

I have uninstalled both GTA IV and MC:LA from my harddrive. GTA IV was extremely slow in loading textures. And it would happen about every 3-4 blocks. So, I'd be driving along, then would suddenly have my car floating in the air because the road textures would disappear. After a few seconds (sometimes close to 5), they would load. Then I would drive a few more blocks and the same thing would happen again. Very annoying.

How big is it on the Xbox HD?

Because I only have a 20gb blush.gif . I'm going to buy a 120gb when I get some more cash.
