Jay
Okay, my father's birthday is coming up this December and my mother just said that she wants to get him a "flatscreen TV" and one of those "menu things to record with a click" Right, so. I need advice. I am in Australia. We are looking at ~40 inch for the TV (so I assume plasma over LCD). Need recommendations. Price really isn't an issue, but the more affordable the better. TiVo was mentioned in conversation. Now, I've had conversations with other people that TiVo is a poor version of Foxtel IQ. Can anyone who has used both or either comment on that? We don't have cable TV (mainly because I don't want it) but will get it eventually I suppose. What is the Australian version of TiVo like and is it worth getting over Foxtel IQ maybe at some point in the future? Cheers and beer you guys. GTA3Freak-2001
The Aussie TiVo has been dubbed a poor man's TiVo mainly because of the measly 160GB HDD but also our lack of many channels but having said that it is supposed to be great for its ease of use for people who like it simple and don't want to be mucking around which usually parents are. I don't own a TiVo but have heard from people who have them, still something worth looking into. Don't ask me about TV's though
Jay
Thanks guys Freakeh. Just got back from JB then. Had a good chat with a dude on the floor. I can get a 40 inch LCD and TiVo for 2.4k. Might just do it.
tj11
F*ck JB, you'll get a better deal from Harvey Norman or The Good Guys..........if you haggle. As for the TV, the best in my opinion (I'm no technician, but have had a lot of experience with electronics and the various brands) would be a Sony LCD (make sure it's 1080p). One more thing to consider, TIVO boxes don't have DVD drives in them. So, if you want to burn anything you've recorded on your HDD, you won't be able to. My best advice is, get a HDD/DVD recorder (either Toshiba, Pioneer or Panasonic). You can connect your Foxtel STB to this equipment later on down the track, no worries. Hope I've helped in some way. Slamman
Though that date has come and gone, the HDTV switch in America is still impending. My experience is with a $40 used DirecTV HDTV tuner Sat box, though I have no paid services, it is Tivo equipped, however, the main hardware allows one to record about an hour of two channels off the ATSC air tuners that are internal. With one antenna IIRC. The Hard Disc is 250GB in size and it depends on what the content is in terms of how much it stores but without Tivo active, it's ATSC over the air signals I use, with all the luxury of digital remote skipping around it affords. I tape a program live (always in standby...no off on these!) and hook it to a more conventional recorder. As new content comes in, the earliest is recorded over, so it's a window of content you can back up and watch/record. I think the best attribute of my method is taping from this to analog, you get the best sound and picture, basically, however, a Dolby Digital signal to analog?? Not gonna work, and I messed some archives doing the DD route to my receiver.
