Saggy
Well, I've been in the middle of a long and extensive upgrade. I had some bad luck with the processor I ordered, it turned out to be defective; I originally thought it was the motherboard and RMA'd it, but after swapping my old Athlon X2 into it, it works fine--well almost. I upgraded from an asus m2npv-vm to a dfi lanparty 790GX. I got the DFI with the 790GX because I was upgrading to a Phenom X4, and I hear they're a very good chipset to have with it. I also got a new video card, going from an NVIDIA 6200 LE to a GeForce 7950 GT. Yet, it seems like the card itself or the driver for it is worse than my old card. Just watching video uses a lot of CPU resources and lags my system up pretty bad. I am using the Linux drivers though, so I'm wondering if it's an issue with that; right now I'm running 169.12. Aside from that, the system has actually frozen once or twice. I'm wondering if I didn't damage the CPU in some way. When I was removing the CPU from my other computer, the heatsink was affixed to it so strongly, it ripped the CPU straight out of the socket, and whilst trying to wrestle it off of the bottom of the heatsink, a few pins were bent and had some slight specs of themeral paste on them. I wouldn't think that either the bent pins or the thermal paste would matter, and wouldn't think that the CPU would work at all if it were a problem with the pins. My theory is that the board is designed for Phenom chips and not Athlon ones, so that's probably why. Anyway, just lookin' for some ideas on what might be the problem here. It seems weird that video stuff would take so much processor resources, so I'm focusing there. Perhaps I need a better driver or something? Starion
Check your power supply, it could be affecting the computers performance if it's not powerful enough. What's the wattage/ampage of your PC's power supply? mod it with Nitrous Oxide and chassis dyno.
Saggy
Check your power supply, it could be affecting the computers performance if it's not powerful enough. What's the wattage/ampage of your PC's power supply? I'm not really sure about the amperage, but it's a 550 watt. This is it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817371002 This is all the specs say about amperage. Input Current 9 AOutput [email protected],[email protected],[email protected],[email protected],[email protected],- [email protected],[email protected] How can I check that this is sufficient power? Starion
I'm not too sure how to check the power that the components need, but that Antec power supply should be more than enough for what you have. Infact, try checking the box for both your processor and your graphics card, they should have the requirements in a smallprint somewhere on the box, or even in the manual. mod it with Nitrous Oxide and chassis dyno. Yeah, my motherboard reccomended a 400 W power supply, but the processor didn't really say. I have the 65 W version of the AMD Athlon X2 4000+ in it right now, but I don't know if that's the power requirement. It shouldn't be that much though, this processor is kind of geared toward energy conservation. The Miker
Go here to see how much juice you need: http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp Very useful tool for anyone that wants to save money on PSU upgrades.

Well, 550 watts seems to be just fine, that's saying I need between 300-360 depending on which CPU I say I have. Democrab
I actually think it may be the Linux Drivers, apparently nVidia's linux drivers suck ass and ATI's are better (Barely though) This is going from what I've heard though.

You've got that statement reversed. Or at least that's the case as I've always heard it. To be more exact: NVidia drivers have always been pretty good ( comparitvely ) on Linux, while ATi's are getting better. I'm wondering if it's not my VCore. I got desperate and started to OC my CPU, give it a little more umph. Well, when I started increasing the VCore a little, the system started to seem a little snappier. I'm not sure if this is just concidence or what, but what is a good vcore? I set it from 1.20 to 1.25. The big problem seems to be that Xorg will occassionally use 50% of the CPU for some reason. I'm not sure what this board is doing differently from my old one, but it's as if it's not even bothering to utilize the video card for some things and relies on the CPU instead.
