Wolfdale processor?

My son's motherboard says he can use a " Wolfdale processor" if he updates his bios.

is it worth it to move to a " Wolfdale processor" from his 2.2 gig processor?

'Wolfdale' means the 45nm version of the Core 2 Duo - lower voltage, more energy efficient, lower temperatures, new instructions, various minor improvements. They overclock really well, too, depends on which motherboard it is though.

He currently has a "e2200" and probably needs a bit of an upgrade.

The E2200 is pretty old.

The E8400 is a newer chip that I hear performs very well and costs $165 on Newegg.com. I haven't updated the BIOS before but I don't think it'd be too hard.

 

But, for just $180 you can get him the Q6600 (I would assume your mobo will work with it, since it can run a Wolfdale chip). It's a Quad core at 2.4Ghz, it'd be MUCH faster than the E2200. Not sure about the E8400 which is 3.0Ghz. Once more programs support multiple cores more and more, the Q6600 would probably be faster. In most modern games it'd be most likely faster than the E8400. Also, you won't have to upgrade your BIOS for it to work.
