Without an IP you can't connect, your ISP knows who you are, etc. With Tor (or any other proxy-chain style system) the site or network you join only see your jump-off IP, which isn't yours. If they try to trace it back they need to go through dozens of proxy servers and thousands of users. Not completly anonymous but join a wireless hot-spot as mentioned above and you're pretty invisible. yeah, pay cash or steal the laptop, you wouldn't want to leave a paper trail then.
