corvettelover
(From Site, http://www.racer.nl/) WHAT IS RACER? Racer is a free car simulation project, using real car physics to get a realistic feeling. Cars, tracks, scenes and such can be created with relative simplicity in mind (compared to other driving simulations). The 3D and other file formats are, or should be, documented. Editors and support programs are also available to get a very flexible and expandable simulator. It uses OpenGL for rendering. It attempts to do well at the physics section, trying to create life-like cars to emphasize car control and doesn't cut back on realism in the interest of fun. If you've played Grand Prix Legends from Papyrus, you'll know what I'm talking about. FEATURES * It's totally free! (for non-commercial use) * Available for multiple platforms; Windows 2000/XP (95/98/ME may work but have some trouble with fonts), Linux and Mac OS X. * 6 DOF chassis movement (the car can move around freely); around 15 DOFs in a total car (wheels/engine/clutch etc). * Uses motion formulae from actual engineering documents from SAE for example. * Incredible flexibility; almost everything is customizable through ASCII files. * Commercial-quality rendering engine (with smoke, skidmarks, sparks, sun, flares, vertex-color lit tracks). * Support for Matlab (log files can be converted into Matlab format for further analysis & processing). * Support for Matrox' Surround Gaming. See the corresponding page on Matrox' site. * Lots of addon cars and tracks available on the web (over 100 tracks & cars). * Easy integration of your own cars and tracks that you create in ZModeler, 3D Studio Max, Maya etc. * At least 15 degrees of freedom for a regular car (6 DOF for the car body, 1 for each wheel's vertical motion and 1 for each wheel spinning, and 1 for the engine, several more for the driveline). Depending actually on how many wheels you put on the car. * Real-time internal clock; no physical dependency on framerate. Controller updates are also done independently of the framerate. * Not limited to 4 wheels; anything from 2 to 8 wheel vehicles are currently supported (but mostly untested, and some problems with hardcoded differentials for example may exist (v0.5.0)). * Not much constraints on the track data; surface info is taken from polygon data (VRML tracks), and splines are used to smooth out the track surface (polygons are too harsh for driving on just like that). * Tools to modify the cars & tracks are freely available on this site (though some external utilities like 3D Studio Max are recommended for best results). * Some used algorithms are explained on this site, so this site can be interesting to learn from if you create your own car simulation software. Also, links and references are available. # 1.1 What is Racer? Racer is a free car simulation project, focusing on realism. It also stimulates users to create their own content (cars and tracks) by using simple file formats. # 1.2 What audience does Racer target? This is not really an arcade game, but more in the Grand Prix Legends style. The focus on realism makes Racer suited for hardcore simfans, automotive engineers, 3D modelers and tweakers (there's a LOT to tweak). If you want to hop in a car, drive off and beat Michael Schumacher's time, then this is NOT the game for you. # 1.3 Can I run it on my computer? You will need Windows 2000/XP/Vista, Linux (nVidia/ATI at least) or MacOS-X (10.2+). Windows 95/98/ME are not supported anymore (unsure about NT4). And you need a graphics accelerator; the better the card, the faster Racer runs. # 1.4 Can I run it on Windows Vista? It should run; see this thread for more information on getting it to run. I have no Vista myself, so can't really test. # 1.5 What hardware is specifically NOT supported? Incompatible these days are most of the Voodoo graphics cards. Some of these have trouble with textures sized above 256x256, and this is already used for the menu (you may notice texture bugs, no menu graphics etc). Also, Mac OS9 is not supported (it's not a Unix). # 1.6 Where can I download it for my platform? Downloads are free. It's available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Click those links for the appropriate download pages and follow the installation instructions. Screen Shots: System Requirements: Windows: 2000/XP/Vista* RAM: 256/1GB (for Vista*) Video Card: ATi 8500/nVidia GeForce 3Ti HD: 200mb* Reccomended: RAM: 512/1GB (for Vista*) Video Card: nVidia 6600/ATi x1300 HD: 200mb* -------------------- (extra space for extra Cars and Mods and Tracks) * Vista not officially supported These requirements are guessed by me, I've ran it on a 9250 PCi and a X1300PCi and the X1300 played it great. It -can- play on DX7/DX6 or lower hardware, but I would not reccomend it. -------------------- (END) Looks pretty cool, try it for yourself (I am downloading it right now) Discuss! http://www.racer.nl/ and for extra Cars and Tracks and stuff: http://www.tracciontrasera.es/modules.php?...wdownload&cid=4 Edited November 12, 2008 by corvettelover

lowridincrew
I had played this years ago. This game really needs to be opened up more to the modding community even more and get some exposure.
corvettelover
uhh, *MURDOC* I think you could play it if your PC is a piece of sh*t, I have a AMD Sempron 3600+ Mobile, 1gb Ram and a ATi X1270 256MB and I play it fine maxxed out. and @ lowridincrew , that is a really good screenshot, I think I saw it on the site for the game, this game actually is very fun, I wish you didn't have to download more cars though (It only comes with a Lambo Murcilago), it is fun though (Does anybody know what the mod that gave the game Motion Blur is called (it gave that awesome wheel blur), I dl'ed it when I had a 9250 but the 9250 could'nt use it becasue it needed Shader 2.0) Edited November 12, 2008 by corvettelover

Democrab
Will try when my 8800GTS 320Mb gets here. I doubt my 6800GS can handle it.. Edit: On second thoughts, downloading now, can't hurt to try.. I swear I've heard of this before though, I think there was another topic on here about it or something... Murdoc, Whats your Graphics card? Edited November 12, 2008 by Joe.
corvettelover
uhh, your 6800gs should handle it fine , I have a ATi x1270 256mb Mobile and it handles it perfect (I had 13 firefox tabs, Windows media player, anti virus, 3 docs up, GIMP, a bunch of folders up and some other stuff) and it was maxxed out and it ran fine. Democrab
Yeah, it ran it fine. Although the Lambo that comes with the game slides more than a bar of soap, luckily the Lancia Delta I downloaded handles better for me.
GTA3Freak-2001
Yeah I swear I've heard of this before but then again I might be thinking of Live For Speed or one of those other "free" simulation games on PC. I'll be checking it out for sure!
corvettelover
yeah, I don't like the Lambo that it comes with, also, does this game look much different with .cg shaders? (it said it has them and it said somewhere that they were Nvidia specific), mine looks like the screens look, does it look much better on a nvidia card?
beavis
I had a 6800 and it ran perfect. So those in doubt, shouldn't really. This game is really optimized to run on all sorts of systems.
Democrab
Yeah, my 6800GS 256Mb Maxed it no problems at 1280x1024 (I wish they had widescreen though) Hahaha, I made the Lancia Delta do a Backflip by hitting a wall at 220KM/h
corvettelover
hahha , where did you get the Lancia Delta? (Link possibly? ) also, you wanted WideScreen? open up racer.ini and search: ; Width and height of window (or fullscreen resolution) you should see this (or similar): width=800 height=600 change those to (if you want 1280x800): width=1280 height=800 Edited November 12, 2008 by corvettelover
*MURDOC*
I guess it cant hurt to try it again, I'll try to stay optimistic.
GTA3Freak-2001
The simulation handling isn't as good as the likes of Live For Speed and while I am not using a wheel I am using my PS3 controller with the acceleration/braking being the right stick(Sony in their wisdom didn't make their triggers pressure sensitive!) to get a good idea of how things handle. And yeah with the resolution I had to fiddle in the racer.ini to get the 1680x1050 support for my screen, annoying thing is it seems to reset everytime you quit the game and start it up again. JasonThummel
I tuned up a Scirocco gti with a turbo, suspension, exhaust, and gear modification and now it drives like a beauty. If anyone wants it, I may be able to distribute it via free upload space.

JasonThummel
Ooops, I forgot to upload the RAR file It works now. (I personally prefer the Drift version because of the sound and feeling but I also wanted something faster to race with)
