Bad fps even with a ATI HD 4870 OC

I have a Q6600 2.4 quad CPU, 4GB of RAM and a ATI HD 4870 on Vista 32 bit. Video card overclocked to max in catalyst control panal.

Running San Andreas on Highest settings, 3x antialiasing in 1440x900. Those specs should murder the game, but i get lag.

If i do a wheelspin, my fps drops to 28/30 and sometimes just driving round LV gives me random lag spikes.

I also have latest drivers as of 15th october.

it makes no sense!

Are you having constant "stutter", or just ocassional lag?

Have you tried changing the CPU affinity to a single core?

(While in the game, alt-tab out. Press CTRL-SHIFT-ESC to bring up the Task Manager, Click on the Processes Tab, then right click on the process for GTA:SA. "GTA-SA.exe" IIRC. Click on "Set Affinity", and then uncheck all but one box.)

See if that helps. Otherwise, it may be a problem with your video drivers, and/or the Radeon doesn't like doing the particle affects. (Since you mentioned the drop when smoking the tires.)

I've tried playing around with affinity, it was already one one core just now, and i tried with all 4, and many combinations but it makes no difference.

The lag isnt stutter, its just random spikes when i drive around, and of course the smoke.

Im pretty stuck for ideas lol, it ran better on my old 7900GTX.

Thanks for the reply though smile.gif

I can run my game at max in a nVidia 8500GT, you should know that ATi wasn't ever "too" famous. (Not talking like a fanboy).

San Andreas is badly optimized full stop. It gets lag spikes sometimes even with a 9800GTX.

Though it is optimised better for Nvidia. confused.gif

mod it with Nitrous Oxide and chassis dyno.

hi. the same happen to me, but then i find why the game only ran at 30Fps. You need to deactivate the frame limiter. w/o that the game start to run at 60Fps.
