Is this unjust?

Now, I know a topic like this has sprung up before, infact I posted a reply in a topic similar to this. But I was reading my local paper and it really pissed me off how much footballers get paid, compared to the greatest British female swimmer in existence.

You've got professional top class footballers like John Terry and Frank Lampard who are on something around £130,000 a week, excluding tax. And then there's players like Daren Bent, who only recently has hit a bit of form (but still has something like 16 goals in about 50 appearence for his club, and he's a striker), who is on something like £95,000 a week. And not to mention Winston Bogarde, who had a four year career at Mega-rich club Chelsea, and played a quite sublime.. 11 times. Judging by the amount of games Chelsea played back then, that surmasses to about 3 games a season, out of 40+. What's worse? He was on £45,000 a week. That's £2,340,000 a year! And all because he was playing for a large club. Which is basically, Ludacris. And then there's the greatest female British swimmer of all time, Rebecca Adlington, who just recently received a 100% pay increase to, get this, £24,000 a week.

Now I understand why professional footballers get paid so much, after all I'm a semi-professional myself. But I really don't understand why Rebecca Adlington, who has risked everything worked just as hard as footballers to acheive her dream, re-wrote history and will remain in The Record books forever, earns a mear smidgin to the likes of a footballer, Basketball player, golfer and even Snooker player.

And that brings me onto Rewards. Rewards I do agree with is when an athlete/athletes break World records. The reward for breaking a World record is $50,000. And why not? They deserve it in my opinion. I mean, no other person has achieved greater distance than when people break World records. But rewards for achieving something like a 147 in snooker (£180,000) seems way too high, compared to athlete re-writing history by becoming the greatest human being ever at a certain event.

So what I'd like to know is, do you think this Is unjust? Or is there something to all this?

Personally I find the wages given to sportsmen and women extortionate, and it amazes me that there's such unbalance in the world when it comes to economy issues. For example, any footballer in a professional team could easily aid any charity or world cause without noticing much of a difference. Granted, it's said that these people "earn" their money, but how have they earned so much? What is it that they do that's so benefit to society and the economy?

The reason footballers and sports people get loads of money is because of the money that the sport generates. All the people who go to the matches, merchandise, advertising... Thats where the money comes from. We have ourselves to blame for paying. We are in effect paying their wages.

I'm fully aware of the reasons footballers get paid so much. I just want to know if you feel that it is wrong for a World record breaking athlete, a person who has reached heights no other human being can compete with, to get paid so little, in comparison with a Winston Bogarde-esque footballer.

I don't know much about the IOC or anything regarding athletics, but I have heard that athletes get paid through sponsorships, and not by the way they perform to an extent. I just feel that it is unjust that athletes get treated this way, when they've worked just as hard as the Lampards and Terrys of the footballing World to live out their dreams.

They deserve more recognition, just like people who risk their lives everyday for the sake of others.

Don't forget that your big names will pocket money from sponsorship deals independent of their club contracts that dwarf their playing salary.

Given that there's so much money in football as a global brand, and also given the fanatical following it inspires in people, I've no real problem with footballers earning a lot of money - it is, after all, a short career, maybe 20 years as a maximum. However, I don't see why footballers shouldn't be paid on a system that's almost entirely performance related.

You'll get fringe players who won't play much, so it'd be only fair to give all contracted players, say a grand a week basic salary. Any player selected for a squad for any game receives an extra grand, and player picked for the starting XI gets, say, three grand, and then the rest of their potential earnings is based on how well they perform - call it commission, if you want. This would rid the world of your Bogardes, and also provide an incentive for lazy f*ckers to actually play some football, and thereby do the job they're paid for. Nobody needs £130k a week, except, possibly, all the homeless people in the country.

I 100% agree with that. Footballers should get paid based on performance. Not only do players like Fernando Torres get massive wages each week, they also get certain bonuses. Examples of them being scoring bonuses, Man of the match bonuses, promotion bonuses and of course they get a pay out for every round they progress in cup competitions. I think that this should still apply, and tie in with the contract clause that you have just described Struff. Would be a much more efficient way of doing things, and yeah, would deminish the Bogardes of football's wages down to what they deserve to be paid.

The reason why swimmers and other similar athletes don't get paid as much as other athletes is because no one cares enough to watch them. Bottom line. When 1,000,000 people show up to watch an event, the people in said event will probly be paid very well. If 10,000 people show up to watch another event, the athletes will not make as much. Pure and simple, the bigger the crowd the bigger the paycheck. It has nothing to do with how hard they worked or sweat or anything like that. It comes down to how many people want to see them do it. Some chick swimming is no where near as exciting for most people as watching a bunch of ogres smashing each other.

P.S. I know you're talking about soccer, but that is not popular in the states. Our footballers are ogres, and draw huge crowds and money. It all applies the same way.

I understand the whole 'The bigger the sport the bigger the market' aspect of things, but Rebecca Adlington broke her World record and Olympic records in the Olympic games. The opening ceremony had over 4 billion viewers, that's more than half the population of the Earth, so I think that when she broke her records she would've had a bigger audience than the vast majority, if not all football matches played in this day and age. Although, now that the Olympics are over, and the swimming competitions she competes aren't going to be anywhere near as televised or popular as the Olympics, I can see your point to an aspect.

And also...

LOL^^^^

I just didn't want you to think I didn't know you were talking about soccer, which is what we call your football over here. Our football probly isn't popular over there, but over here most of the players are steroid infused brutes. I don't really watch any sports so I'm not to blame for the huge salaries.

But the same theory can be applied to everthing. You can be the most gifted musician, writing beautiful ballads for orchestras or other stuff and only be mildly rich. Or a no talent pop star making more money than any of us could dream of.

An example of that being The Jonas Brothers.

So, judging by what you have said, I take it that you agree that this is all wrong and unjust?

I agree that it is unjust. I don't believe some people should have as much money as they do, but I'm not the one giving it to them. The millions of people who watch them are. And as for the underpaid athletes, where could the money come from? Air? Tax me to pay them? I don't think so. If no one wants to watch them they won't make the money, no matter if they are the greatest athlete ever.

Not only do I think it's unjust but also the "famous stars" make so much money for doing practically nothing.. I understand that training in sports take a lot of dedication but you're doing it because you enjoy the sport, right? why should you get paid THAT much?

Adlington's charging £8,000 for public appearances, so what she doesn't make from being paid she'll get through publicity.

I do however agree that the fact that a Footballer, who gets paid a ridiculous amount of money to play a game of football on the TV to entertain people, compared to a Nurse or Doctor, who are saving people's lives or a Teacher who is basically giving people the knowledge to achieve in life, who get f*ck all compared.

I mean, sure they entertain the world, but what's more important, survival or entertainment? Why should they get so much money just because they're entertaining people once a week?
