LOL... I already know that it can't run on my PC. I was just making an inquiry about whether or not GTA IV actually required, life or death, Shader Model 3.0 to run. Apparently, it can't run without it.

Hello, I recently bought a new pc and would like to know if I will be able to play GTA at maximum settings.

Here are the main specs:

CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83Ghz

4 GB memory (however only 3.2GB is recognized by the system)

GeForce 9600GT with 1GB memory

Win XP SP3 (32 bit version)

I'm not too much into the gta world lately but I heard that the PC port had many issues. Will I have any problem running the game in this PC?

You won't get max, but it should be able to run on medium with decent frame rates.

Hi all.

I have purchased the game and realised that I need to update my graphics/video card, but am limited in what I can spend. Before I do put money into something I cannot return, I was hoping someone clever might be able to look at my system and let me know if the card I plan on buying will improve the game to the point where I can at least play in windowed mode on the lowest setting without lag or texture issues.

Bear with me, I am new to all of this confused.gif

Acer Aspire E650 (as I bought it 2 years ago)

Intel ® Pentium ® D CPU 2.80 GhZ (2 CPUs) - (copied from dxdiag, not sure if this is a core duo thingamejig)

4Gb RAM (I think?)

80Gb space (30Gb free)

ATI x1300 (here lies my problem - well hopefully only here)

XP SP3

DX 9.0

I want to purchase the ATI HD4350 as it is in my price range, but will it give me the satisfaction of decent gameplay at lowest - mid settings, or do I need something better?

I would really appreciate a detailed or relevant answer, as despite looking everywhere for discussions on this I am yet to see one with my exact specs, which makes problem solving a bit more like guesswork. I am aware of the minimum requirements, but have seen so many posts from people with at least minimum who are still having serious issues, so would like to avoid that.

Desperate to play this game....please help, kind and knowledgeable people! colgate.gif

People will not agree with me on this, but they do not own the card (I do, the 512mb version actually, and I wish I bought the gig). Save a few dollars and get double the VRAM in an HD3850. 1GB HD3850 is a way better deal than a 512MB HD4350. The differences between these two cards are in no way comparable to the differences in a 3850 and a 4850. And the 3850 will have no problem pumping IV to the settings you will ever be able to reach without building a Whole new PC.

Take a look at this comparison between your CPU and a 1.86ghz core 2 duo (minimum listed req)

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/cpu-charts-2008-q1-2008/compare,369.html?prod[1258]=on&prod[1297]=on

(have to paste it - the board breaks the link, look at it, you can see why wink.gif)

Read closely, higher is not always better in that table I linked. In most cases a higher number means slower/took longer.

There is no Pentium D that touches any Core2Duo, no matter the gigahurtz unless you OC the hell out of your system or something like that. It's a whole different architecture only based on the Pentium D.

As for your GFX card again, do the 3850 and look into how good of a processor you can upgrade to after that in your motherboard, because even the 3850 will be bottlenecked by that Pentium D 930.

For you to use that 1GB vram and support all the high settings of IV and a high resolution (do not use one without the other - use low settings for low resolution), you need to look into a core2duo. Fastest FSB (not the useless Ghz) your motherboard will support, and biggest L2 cache you can get your hands on. GTA IV doesn't need fast gigahurtz to run well even if it is preferred by the app, it is a fast system overall that matters. So you want the fastest processor you can get with your FSB, and 1.86ghz is plenty to run this game faster than the consoles do (living proof right here with an e6320 at stock 1.86ghz and 30 to 30+ fps and rarely dips, medium/high/very high settings and 1680x1050)

Thank you very much mate, your response was both thorough and very helpful...much appreciated!

I shall save for the 1G as you suggest, perhaps worrying about upgrading the processor at a later date, thanks again! biggrin.gif

AMD 64 x2 5200+ 2.7GHz

3GB RAM

nVidia 6150SE 128MB (on board)

500GB HD

Realtek HD audio

Vista Home Prem.

Only thing that fails is GPU, not enough memory!

I'm not sure if i should get a better gfx card (like 8600) or just buy GTAIV if I get a PS3 soon..

I would save your money and either get something like a 8800 GTS or a 9800 GT. If you like ATI, a 4850 or 4870 would do you good. What is your OS? 64 bit?

Hehe bugger the guy that sold us the computer a few years back ensured us that it was the latest for playing games, wish I had known about Alienware then!

Really handy to find someone who's specs are similar to mine who can actually play the game though, as I was really worried that buying a new graphics card might not fix the issue. will be saving for the expensive one though just to make sure that I don't throw money away, but still tossing over which one to buy colgate.gif

Only wish that some lovely family member would appreciate our plight and "lend" us a new card, it is torture having it here and not being able to play it cryani.gif

Thanks for your reply!

Graphics card such as.. 7200,7300,7400,7500,7600, 8200,8300,8400,9200,9300,9400 - are the worst cards if you want to play games..

I also thought 9400 was better than 8800. It's not. The first number is the series.. 9-400 vs 8-800. What matters most, are the numbers behind the first one. So 8800GT is better than 9200,9300,9400,9500,9600GT. Pretty much the same at ATI.

If you want to play the game normally, get X2=Core2Duo with ~2.5Ghz, min.-8600GT, anything better, 2GB RAM + more, SP3.

This is for ~20 fps.

On my specs ( in my sig ) , I play it on 22fps with Highest rendering, medium textures, 1024x768(75Hz), View&Detail distance both on 40, vehicle density on 30, no shadow. Not lieing, this is real..When it's rain it lags a bit from time to time.

For GREAT gameplay, get a Quad Core = X4 with ~2.7Ghz, 9800GTX+,GTX 295 or any good card, HD4870,HD3870, 3GB RAM + MORE

EDIT: My specs are

AMD X2 Athlon 5200+ ( 2.7Ghz)

2GB RAM

8600GT 512MB DDR2 + Extra cooling

Windows XP SP 3

140GB HD

I have similar specs as you have.

AMD X2 5200+ 2.7GHz

3GB RAM

6150SE on board

500GB HD

Vista Home Prm. 32bit

i get around 1-5 fps with all low settings, it's horrible. I tweaked mine a bit too.

would you recommend the 8600GT for my setup? Tell me some others too, I prefer nvidia. I want to spend under $100 USD if possible.

OK. I am about to receive a new graphics card, the PNY 9600GT, and while I wait for it to ship I am wondering if GTA IV will run once I get the card. Right now, THIS is how it runs:

With my new card, I am hoping it will run much better. How will it run on low, med, and/or high settings with the following specs?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Dual Core Processor 2.31 GHz

2 GB RAM

Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 32-Bit

And of course, the PNY 9600GT @ 512MB video memory

So, how will it run? I am also going to be getting two more gigs of RAM in the next couple of weeks, so how severely (in a good way) will it affect my performance? Thank you! wink.gif

Hi all

I recently posted in regards to my horrible Pentium D specs with my ATI 1300x, realising that even buying a top end graphics card would likely do little to improve overall game performance with such a crappy processor.

I have since ordered a new computer and was hoping someone here would be able to tell me how well the game will perform. The specs are as follows:

Intel E7400 Core 2 Duo 3M LGA775 (2.7gh)

2G DDR2

MSI 9800GT

320G HD

XP SP3

So will this run it smoothly and free from lag on medium settings (with life-like looks)? Or will I still be pushing to get the minimum graphical experience from the game?

Any response appreciated!

Edited to try and hide my incorrect usage of "mhz".....oops I just said it!

Thats basically what i have, E7300 OC'd to 3.6 Ghz and an OC'd 9800GT runs at 30 average outside which is perfectly fine for me.

I have 4Gb 1066Mhz RAM but that makes little difference. I have medium settings, 1680x1050 i think and around 40-50 for the settings, 0 shadows i don't like them

I did stick everything to max (not high textures as my gfx only = 512) and i get average of 15 lol which is meh.
