Won't work.

Your CPU, video card and RAM are too weak.

@Chango, Mods are for PC only.

Now you say 2,75GB? So what were these 1GB DDR2 you mentioned before?

Anyway it doesn't change anything, your PC is not enough even for the very lowest setting.

With shadows off and medium settings.

Yeh.

I don't understand it. CanYouRunIt website shows that my PC is above recommended specs, yet when I play the game with video settings just a little bit higher than minimum - I barely get 20-25 FPS.. WTF?

Here's CanYouRunIt test results:

The Nvidia 8600GT is a budget card and it doesn't really have 4GB of vid RAM though that is irrelevant given how little rendering power it has in the current age. The CanYouRunIt benchmark is about as useful as a chocolate kettle in this case. Basically, you got a decent setup let down by an ageing budget graphics card. Your only choice is to upgrade or low detail settings. There is no magic cure.

How well could my current PC handle GTA IV? It's:

AMD Athlon II X2 240 CPU

Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H Mobo

4GB PQI PowerSeries DDR2-800 RAM (2 sticks of 2GB running in dual channel mode)

Gigabyte ATI HD4850 1GB (this is their own version of the HD4850, not a normal spec'd one)

Samsung 500GB SATA HDD 16MB Cache 7200 RPM 3GB/s

I'm guessing my CPU needs to be upgraded. But maybe it can handle it...?

You are right. CPU needs upgrading ASAP to feed HD4850.

Oh, thanks dude smile.gif Was wondering, wtf wa wrong with my PC. Do you have any suggestions, which graphics card I should look at. Preferably one, that doesn't cost a fortune. biggrin.gif

What's your budget and where are you located?

I'm not sure about the budget, since I have no idea how much should I expect a good graphics card to cost. I mean, is £100 enough for a decent graphics card, or should I prepare to spend over £300? Location: England

The price really depends on what you expect from the card. What settings are you planning to run it on? What resolution?

At least medium settings, maybe some set to high, but I guess medium will do (I'm more concerned about framerate. As I said earlier, I barely get 20 fps at the moment). The highest resolution my current monitor supports is 1280x1024, so I guess this is the one I want to use for GTA IV.

That processor is capable of playing the game on high settings. So I recommand you a card like the nVidia GTS250 (€100 - £85) or GTX 260 (€175 - £145). Those can run the game on high too.

Oh, thanks mate. smile.gif I'll have a look at GTS250, I guess I could afford £85 graphics card.

I wouldn't say high, you'd still need a bit more power to whack up those settings. I'd setting for a HD 5770 or a 768MB GTX 460. For a long term investment though, the 1GB GTX 460 is highly recommended, it has DX11 support and sub 200 quid price tag.

Another question. I was looking at the prices of the above-mentioned graphics cards and then I found another one - HD 4870. It seems like it costs about the same as GTS 250, but performs way better (at least that's what reviews and benchmark graphs say). Just wanted to ask you lot if you think HD 4870 is a good choice, because so far its price seems very good to me, and by the looks of all those reviews it performs as good as other graphics cards that cost £150+

To be honest with you, I'm a bit tight on the budget at the moment, so

under £100 graphics card which will run GTA IV smooth enough for me to enjoy the game > long term card which costs over £100

For running at 1280x1024, a 1GB HD5770 like this one for £134 (from a UK site) is better than a GTS250. It's faster, newer and supports DirectX 11 whereas the GTS250 and GTX260 only supports DirectX 10. You'll probably be able to run at high settings too.

You might need to upgrade your PSU too. If you can find out your current PSU's brand and model I can tell you if you need to upgrade or not. Just open up the case and the PSU should have a big sticker with all the details.

If your PSU isn't sufficient, this for £37.47 (again from a UK site) should do for a HD5770.

Oh and about the HD4870, the 5770 would still be a better choice as it's on par with the HD4870 performance wise and supports DX11.

£134 + £37 = £171

Isn't that the price of an XBOX 360? If I wanted a long term solution for my graphics problem, I'd probably get a console. I'm still trying to find a cheapest way to run GTA IV on my PC. If there is no cheap way, I'm just gonna get a console and stop worrying about any spec issues.

You don't have to buy the PSU if your current one is good enough. That's why I asked you to tell us what your current PSU is. If it's underpowered for a HD5770, it won't cut it for a HD4870 either.

As for a 360, well it's up to you. Just because you don't have to upgrade a 360 doesn't mean it'll last forever. When a new Xbox is out, you will have to upgrade. If your PC is not outdated at this point (which it wouldn't be if you get a good video card), it should last you longer than a 360 as long as you don't mind turning the detail down a notch in the future (the detail would still be better than any console).

My PSU is indeed underpowered for those cards. 450W by the looks of it. I guess I'll have to play GTA IV on the lowest possible settings until I can afford almost £200 worth of hardware. Thanks for your help guys. smile.gif

That's what I thought. Thanks man!

If the CPU is above or around 2.5GHz, it should be fine.

I've played IV on a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo and a weaker card than a 4850 (8800GT) and it ran fine at medium, 1920x1200.

Oh that's good. My 240 runs at 2.8GHz and I'd like to play it at my native res, which is 1600x900.
