Emotion98.3 - Yo man, good to hear that your PC is finally built and running. Couple a pointers for 'ya though...

>>>ATi/AMD GPU - Gawd man, you bent over and let TheAdmeister have his way with you. A GTX275 or better is more expensive, but hey, surprise surprise, it's a much better card! Ah well. Can't say that I didn't try to sway you towards nVidia... (Driver support, fanbase, forums, general all-round godliness)

>>>Always run games at native resolution, it puts less strain on the hardware because the graphics card has to alter the frequency (V-Sync) to match the monitor's frequency. It's like someone e-mailing you images in 1152x864 and then you having to convert them all to 1024*768, because that's the resolution which you require them at. It just takes more time and IOPS and more work for your GPU. smile.gif

>>>Re-install GTAIV and go for patch 1.0.4.0, have shadows on high, (Yes, I know with new patches that now high=medium / very high=high, whatever...) and run medium reflection resolution and you will have a f**kin' ball with this game.

Still a shame about that 5770 though... Ouch.

Does your average FPS take into account night-time situations? Rain? Fog? Cause I'm kicking a higher CPU clock speed and faster DDR2, and I could say my average was 65FPS, but that's not strictly true due to night, fog and rain conditions. smile.gif

Let me get a point across - the GTX275 is a LOT more expensive (last time I checked, even 260's were more expensive), and they don't have much more of an advantage. They have faster memory cores, that's probably it.

And they aren't better driver-wise. Sure, nVidia makes them faster, but they tend to have quite a few more bugs. The 197.75 (?) driver had a bug that would disable fan speed control, yet the worst I've had with ATi is the fact I needed to restart for it to work fine.

Anyway...

@Emotion:

You should try ramping up a few of the settings, since your specs are so close to mine. My settings are at highest, with the exception of View Distance being at around 35, and Detail Distance at about 60. Everything runs nicely, although you'll want to test the FPS in game since the benchmark usually gives 'untrustworthy' results.

EDIT: Also, it's big but I think it's worth it. The first thing we noticed when we were putting it in was how big it was compared to the old 7800GTX I had in my old PC, but like I say it's worth it. There hasn't been a game where I can't run it at high/max settings so far.

By the way, I thought you said you were going for the 4890?

U R serious? So what you mean, lower res = lower FPS? Come on...

This is 100% false. By default settings, it's the monitor that resizes output to fit the screen, not GPU - unless you force it through drivers.

So what you're trying to say is that by spending a lot more cash, we can get much better GPU? Way to go, Sherlock! We'd never figure that out. wink.gif Edited by yojo2

This game is such a bullsh*t, i cant even run it with:

XFX HD 5770

4GB DDR3 1333MHz

1055T @ 3,5GHz

Cortec takes fanboyism to a whole new level.

The 5770 is a great card for the money and provides more value than a GTX275. Good choice icon14.gif.

Why do people base their values on if its more expensive then its better? Why is there a sudden retardation projected. "faster memory cores" Facepalm. Referring to memory bandwidth? Obviously you don't know what you are talking about.

"The 197.75 (?) driver had a bug that would disable fan speed control, yet the worst I've had with ATi is the fact I needed to restart for it to work fine."

So what you are implying is that its worse to have your computer restart due to driver fault than to have the fan stop and your card fry?

"Gawd man, you bent over and let TheAdmeister have his way with you. A GTX275 or better is more expensive, but hey, surprise surprise, it's a much better card! Ah well. Can't say that I didn't try to sway you towards nVidia... "

Fan base, holy sh*t if you are part of it, now im grateful that i went with ATi on this generation. You just went full retard.

"but hey, surprise surprise, it's a much better card!"

You are not a credible source.

Hi my rig is as follows:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 @ 2,40 GHz

3 GB RAM (DDR3 I think)

320MB Nvidia 8800GTS

and I run the game mediumish (shadows turned off, view distance ~17 and everything else pretty much in medium... resolution 1440x900).

Anyway I was thinking I should buy a new graphics card and I found this one: http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=prodvgasp...∏_no=1989 for a pretty good deal.

I ask you, GTA community, is this a proper card for the rest of my rig (to play GTA IV with decent settings, high/very high)?

Running windows 7

The link doesn't work man. But I'd recommend the HD5770 and up for an upgrade. DX11 would be good smile.gif.

What's with all that DirectX craze?

I cannot see one reason why it should be an advantage when considering GPUs in that price category. 5770 too slow anyway for dx11 to make real difference.

eyfi - did you mean this card? http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&...&maincat_no=130

It'll be slower than your 8800GTS.

Well it futureproofs the card to an extent and it really doesn't make sense to get a card now which doesn't support DX11 when a good performing DX11 card can be had for quite cheap.

this one should work if you copy and paste it into your browser.

It's an HD5670 and I really think I can't afford anything more expensive. It's a directx11 card like the 5770

As I said before, it's slower card than 8800GTS. But there is a slight chance it'll perform better in GTAIV (and probably only in this game), since GTS really suffer from lack of VRAM. Those 320MBs really aren't enough.

5770 would be much better choice, since it's superior to 8800GTS all-round.

It will be slower?? really?

I'm looking for a reasonably priced card which is available for me to buy (in my area)...

The price difference for me is about 100$ (12 thousand ISK) but if the 5670 is worse than my old card then it may just be worth it.

Well it is slower than the 9800GT so yes. A 5770 would be a much better choice.

Just wondering if I could run GTA4. I'm not bothered about it being amazing, but just being reasonable.

Can I run it says yes, Yougamers say's no, so i'm not sure.

I've got:

AMD Athlon II X4 Quad-Core Processor 630

2 Gb RAM

ATI Radeon HD 4350 512mb

You'd probably have to run it at low/medium graphics. Your CPU is powerful enough, but the graphics card lets it down a little bit.

You might also have to mess around with IV's commandlines to reduce stuttering, I know I had a lot of stuttering before I upgraded to 4GB of memory.

what the hell?

It says my system does not even meet minimum req.

My system:

Phenom II x4

4GB ddr3 1333

500GB WD Caviar 32mb cache sata 3g

512MB ddr2 graphics card

I know its not an expensive rig, but I figured it would atleast run GTAiv lol. I believe there is an error on that site's reading

You need to find out what model graphics card you have. Your CPU is up for the job for sure. Also, your tone belies your misunderstanding. This game, though doesn't look anywhere near as good as Crysis and the likes still requires very hefty about of hardware power. Don't be fooled by the previous GTA games as they were based on much, much older game engines.

It's an MSI card with ATI Radeon HD 4350. It does pretty well on a few other games, but I haven't tried GTA4 yet, I just built the system a few days ago, mainly for working, but I may play some too. I use Ubuntu to do most of my work in, so I rarely run windows, but when I do it is to play games or use Photoshop

4350 was not designed for playing games. Don't expect much.

Yeah, that graphics card was designed for a media centre/HPTC so have fun getting GTA4 to run well on it!

In fact, I just realise that is the exact graphics card that I put in my parents' media PC. It definitely doesn't meet minimum requirements!

Oh well, it plays MotorM4x pretty well. I know i mainly got the card so I could display in 1080 res. for graphic design, so if it could play games that would be a plus.

Sadly, GTA4 is quite a step up for GTA3 engine games of the last 3 in the franchise. You'll be alright if you stuck with Solitaire. tounge.gif

Can't say I've even heard of MotorM4x?!

Intel Pentium D rated at 3.36 GHz

two hard drives which give 250 GB

1GB DDRII

Vista Home Premium

ATI Readon Express 1250
