If McCain wins I'm going to blow myself up. For freedom.

I'm not sure thats the right thing to do. Sit outside of city hall and starve yourself to death...that'll get their attention.

I'm probably living in the past here, but earlier I watched a recent Simpsons episode while on my break and while it was quite poor (nothing new), the opening segment which sees Homer try to vote for Obama got a few chuckles out of me. Good ol' rigging... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1aBaX9GPSaQ

Anyway, a new President rolling into the White House in January and the chances are (everybody seems to be on the Obama Train) it will be Barack Obama, now I was just wondering if anybody's got any opinions on the social ramifications electing a black President will have on American society? Is racism becoming a thing of the past, and are the media just blowing this out of proportion? Or do you believe electing Obama will lead on to something greater in terms of race-riots, etc?

Or simply do you think it will have no effect what-so-ever on American society? Just trying to throw a little debate out there...

(Or even will McCain triumph over young Barack).

To be honest I think the media blows just about everything they report on out of proportion. News isn't about news anymore, it's about entertainment... and everyone loves gloom and doom. Life just isn't exciting enough for most people, which is why people are more wrapped up in the exciting lives of television stars and characters than they are in anything real... Not that I could blame them, but it's still a problem.

As far as the social ramifications of having a black president, (gawd, I just know I'm going to be called a prejudiced bigot for this one) I think it could lead to the perpetuation of illegal misguided ideas like affirmative action and reparations. This irritates me because I had the initiative to get a decent job and lose more money to the government than I make with the extra income because I'm one of those "evil" people who doesn't like to share his toys.

As far as riots and everything go... this is just the product of people buying into sensationalism. Racism IS more or less a thing of the past... as a nation we are far more enlightened than we were forty years ago no matter how much some people would like to argue that. The sky isn't going to fall either way... like Rome didn't fall in a day. It made a steady, smooth transition into the Holy Roman Empire. This is America's fate as well, I think.

Civil War II: The Bloodening

Nah, probably nothing. While people may piss and moan about it, most people are just too apathetic these days to rise up.

cant be bothered to watch tv now, someone put the results in this thread

Have you ever watched the results of a Presidential Election come in? If so, you'd realise how big and unreliable a task that is.

I personally believe the whole ethnic background spotlight issue has to come about regardless yet I do not think that most of the USA is racist as people imply.

There are so many families with mixed backgrounds that it is difficult to imagine how it could be as bad as the squeeky wheels claim it is

Regardless of their background/color/upbringing, most squeeky wheels seem about the same on such issues even though they fight about which squeeky wheel deserves the grease for their palms.

Just something I have noticed when confronted with those who veiw things like that.

Don't get me wrong, there is racism and prejustice abroad but it isn't anywhere near being the majority in the USA, IMAO.

What the ramifications of this particular president? (Regardless of who takes the position after the election)

I guess we will certainly see.

Maybe I'll starve myself and then blow myself up. It'll be a double-whammy. For freedom.

I expect this to be one of the closest elections, no doubt. But if McCain wins, I'm moving to Europe ASAP.

Just got back from putting down my Obama vote, pretty good crowd turn out in LA. They're already talking about a record-number of people voting this time.

I guess after Bush happened (...twice), people are finally starting to wake up and smell the elections.

I hope W refuses to step out of office.

That would just be icing on the cake.

---------------------------------------------

Not that I believe that will happen or anything nor do I believe that the situation has necessarily gone this far as of yet.

Nor do I believe he is the Great Leader that so many believe he is.

That's a bit over the top don't you think? Unless the Nazi party of the communist party win, there's no reason to move to another country. It's not like the president has absolute authority. Congress exists for a reason.

The bigger the population, the more electoral votes. Makes sense no?

Look at NY. It has a lot of Electoral votes as well.

I'm sure W is just dying to get out of office.

Can't wait to crawl up in a hole and hide until the "presidential conferences" between himself and other former presidents comes up and he needs to show up with the rest of them to advise the "new" president.

Yeah, a nice cozy Texas fire side snooze with some bourbon and music would probrably be right on his schedule.

Or anyone's schedule after such a difficult office as he has endured regardless of the particulars.

War, Natural Disasters Gallore, Economy Troubles, Civil Unrest.......is there no end to the nightmare?

The individual state results determine the winner. Each state is a certain amount of points and 270 is required to win. Refer to that wiki link above. I hate that system, because you could have the popular vote but still lose. I love you, Democracy.

That's a bit over the top don't you think?

It's over the top if I want to move to another country? I've always wanted to regardless, but McCain would be the icing on the cake. The main reason being Sarah Palin. It just scares the hell out of me that she could be the vice-president and (potentially) THE president.

do you win from the ammount of Electoral College votes, or do you win from the overall ammount of votes?

Wow, 16 members viewing this topic right now.

as of 7:40pm est,

McCain - 624,029

Obama - 667,594

Looks like Obama has a 40,000 vote lead hey, so you could say he is winning right? WRONG. McCain is leading in electoral votes, which means those 40,000 extra people that voted Obama wasted their time voting. That is so wrong in so many ways.

Electoral Votes.

Gore won the popular vote in 00, but failed to meet the magic number of 270 to win the electoral college.

Well, it is if you want to move to another country just because McCain gets elected.

Yeah, I don't understand the logic behind the electoral college process. So someone else's vote is more important than mine? Why? Because the population is more heavily concentrated somewhere, they are suddenly more enlightened about the presidential election that I?

John McCain wins South Carolina

McCain 16 - 3 Obama

Expected that McCain wins the southern states. No surprise there.

And no, its not an insult, its just going on historical reference.

Parliamentary systems are just as unreliable - I could sit here and criticise the Westminster System for hours.
