Game of the Year.

Well... it was good.

I just finished it and it's rented so I checked out all the variations on the endings.

The sort of easy, final boss fight and the Time Life existential meandering narratives on the endings left me feeling a little flat. I would have much rather seen actual things happening inside the world of Deus Ex rather than a bunch of old stock news footage. It's cool to leave some things to the imagination but it felt a bit Fallout 3 cheapy to me for some reason.

I also realized I could have finished this a week ago save the fact that I scrounged every single weapon and item for resale and hacked literally everything in the game thinking I would need it at some later point and you really don't, weapons and money are freely available from beginning to end. I was 4 Praxis Kit's shy of being fully augmented in every category but you really only use about half of them most of the time so there's no real reward in that either. I was a big Tenchu: Stealth Assassins nut back in the day so this was still pretty fun to play through, I just feel like I wasted a lot of effort on it and there's very little incentive to replay it at this point.

My last real gripe is how in the initial previews last year they showed very clearly that Jensen had some sort of dream tying him into angels or seraphim in his past but they completely axed that ethereal angle out of the storyline all together which might have made for a cool original spin on technology and mysticism coexisting in the same place similar to Shadow Run but they simply ignored they'd ever shown such a thing in the previews. There were even a few vague mentions of "angels" in game but they never followed through. It could have even explained why his DNA was so special or the mysterious thing with his aging quickly but again they missed their own boat on that one. It just felt like storyline wise this aspired to be something grander than it ended up being, a bit rushed for their deadline perhaps. Unfortunate, as this preview gave me serious wood when I first viewed it.

Seriously, watch this opening. WTF Eidos?

Creed Bratton

They didn't get rid of anything mystical. It's only symbolism. No real angels etc. Even his name - Adam is symbolic. And the whole angel thing is supposed to symbolize something more than human. Übermensch, as Nietzsche would say. Although "more than human" theme of Deus Ex has nothing to do with Nietzsche's concept.

Not sure if this has been mentioned either, but does Jensen really have to stand up to hack?! I hate hacking in general, but this makes it even worse.

Yes indeed, there are several times I'd creep up on a terminal in the ducking position and get totally pissed when he'd fully stand up and get spotted through a window. I know it's that way to add a "risk" element to hacking but it's kind of crappy just the same.

@GTAvanja: I def see what you're saying on the symbolism angle, that makes perfect sense but think how much more interesting it would be if symbolism became literal ala Assassin's Creed or something in that vein where you actually do have some sort of outside influence and power working behind the scenes that functions outside the norm. They could have taken this a bit deeper is all I'm really saying. There are several questions that go unanswered about Adam at the end of the game and the player's sort of left holding the bag.

And for those of you who have finished the story, just curious. Out of the four choices, what decision did you find yourself identifying with more so by the end?

Strangely, I actually felt very comfortable backing Seraph's play for the unhindered advancement of biotechnology. I somehow felt more at ease with the idea of helping human evolution along rather than regulating it, which kind of surprised me as I can see several reasons why we should be cautious going in that direction but it just felt "right" for some reason.

If there is one reason why this game is awesome, it is this:

Was a huge fan of the first Deus Ex when it came out. I really feel as if they did the name justice with this one. There is something so unique about Human Revolution that i can't help but calling it my goty so far. I heard somewhere that square enix is trying to turn Deus Ex into a key ip...

Found the article...

That's money. Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed.

The ending was really weak. I was expecting something epic like Mass Effect 2, involving everything you've done so far with all major characters involved. It's still an amazing game. But the ending makes me really sad when I think about what they could have done with it.

Seriously important question here.

In shanghai I sneaked into the hive and overheard that convo so I didnt get access to Tong's office and the door cannot be opened. Therefore I cant get access to the ebook that is in there. On the second time round in shanghai, will that office be open regardless of what happened the first time?

I have spent an entire weeks worth of opening, looting, knocking out everyone, and selling in this place to go back to the very start of shanghai.

Anyone miss this the first time but still managed to get it later?

Because I am about to smash the disk and throw this sh*t out the window. This is EXACTLY the reason why level based games should NEVER have collectibles. If there is a chance to accidently miss something and be f*cked, then game developers need to cut their balls off and shove them up their nose and then headbutt the wall which has been covered in their own excrement.

I'm not sure I understood the problem but if theres something behind a door you cant open, and all you care is getting in that room, you can just blast the door open via any kind of weaponry.

The door has no option for opening, though. You either figure out the barman is Tong, or you find out in the vents. Fortunately, I explored that part of The Hive before I had that objective. Didn't get all the books, but I need to do another play for Pacifist in the future anyway.

I think meta is right as well. I didn't try, but there are soldiers stationed outside the second time, and Tong is in hiding.

There is also sewer access to Hive, but is blocked with cloud of toxic gas during second visit in Hengsha. I couldn't check it, because I didn't invest in lungs, but I'm quite sure it's also closed.

f*cking complete and utter prickholes. Why the f*ck is this not in massive f*cking warning letters anywhere, it doesnt say bullsh*t in the guide and roadmap and nobody f*cking mentioned sh*t this is a MAJOR f*cking flaw in the game.

It would be literally quicker for me to just reload shanghai beat the entire game in a speed run, than for me to do all the sh*t I have already done in shanghai.

This game went instantly from awesome to f*cking stupid as sh*t and it can f*ck off and die.

Oh, dude. Anger management, please.

Do we have to do this again? Really? You've been here 4 years.

On the actual subject, I agree with Daz, its not a big deal for me as I dont collect like a madman, but for those who do I can understand how gay it is.

And what will happen if you won't collect all the books (except not getting achievement)? You'll have another reason to play it for another time.

Exactly. And the game is good enough to deserve at least another playthrough.

My OCD goes crazy, I plan it all out and when it f*cks up it pisses me off.

I have wasted my f*cking time collecting all the books this far, and because of c*nty designing I have to do it all again.

I wanted to get my annoying playthrough out of the way first, then to go back and have fun and be allowed to shoot people and set off alarms.

Maybe our first playthrough should be for fun, and then you can focus on your OCD. Because ultimately gaming experience should be fun. Don't rob yourself out of that.

I finished the game a few days ago and I have to say I feel that the best ending was the one where Jensen blew up the facility. While it was probably the most vauge ending, it actually answered what happened to everyone in the facility. In the other endings, I have no idea how Taggard or Darrow or whatever reacted to the choices and answered too many questions. In fact, all endings asked a lot of questions, but destruction one felt right.

Here is how I'd rank the endings:

1. Destruction ending

2. Darrow ending

3. Sarif ending

4. Taggard ending.

I chose Sarif's ending. He's my favorite character. He reminds me of me.

Easiest boss fight so far is Yelena Fedorova, i beat her in less than 2 minutes it just took 2 frag mines and a few bullets and she was defeated.
