What's In The Briefcase?

Recommended Posts

For those who have seen Pulp Fiction enough times to wonder what the suitcase contains, this debate is for you. I've seen this film a fair few times and all the clues add up to what I believe said case to contain. For those who don't want to know until you've read my evidence and beliefs, I've stuck it in spoilers (if they even work)...

Marsellus Wallace's soul.

Now consider this; the contents of the case glow gold and are more beautiful than anything or anyone has ever seen. The item I believe to be in the case is said to possess such a quality that is far more breathtaking than anything found on or in the human body. Furthermore, the combination on the suitcase has extreme religious suggestion and connotation. This combination is the number 666, number of the devil and prominent in the teaching of Christianity. If we're going to go obvious, the contents glow gold, and although this has nothing much to do with my opinion at all, it reinforces my belief.

This opinion is also listed as a rumour on the popular urban legend website Snopes, which is easily accesible by Google since clickable links don't work. Simply follow Movies, then Films, then look for Pulp Fiction.

So am I crazy? Or speaking sense? What do you believe the contents to be? You decide.

Yeah i've heard this theory before, and frankly i found it a bit stupid. I always just assumed it was gold. But i suppose technically since we weren't shown what was inside. then it clearly isn't meant to contain anything specific. Just whatever you imagine it to be. But i still don't get why people think it's his soul. I mean ok the combination is 666, but what other clues are there to suggest it's a soul? and if there are any, what clues are there that it's his soul?

Radioactive cheese of course!

Nah, just kidding. It could be anything from Marsellus Wallace's soul to polished blocks of gold. Who knows.

That's the whole point... who knows whats in it? A stroke of genious from Tarantino... basically, you, as the audience fill in what you want it to be

I heard the Soul theory too... and that explains the plaster on the back of his head, because Indians belived that was where the soul left the body... which make me believe that after a bit of research, Tarantino put that in there intentionally

It's a cinematic device that works perfectly! I doubt Tarantino has even decided what's in it in his own mind... here we are fourteen years later still discussing it

Wrong! read:

Actually Ving Rhames has a scar on the back of his head, thats why Tarantino put it there. When he's talking to Bruce Willis in the bar, you see the back of his head for most of the shot, and Quentin didnt want the scar to distract the audience so he slapped a plaster on his head. Some movie trivia for ya!

My theory is that Tarantino has done all this on purpose to create myths etc when its just gold or money and the briefcase has a light in it.

I agree with you.

I hate it when directors do this though, I interpret it as lazyness. I find it to be pretentiousness on the movie makers part thet they'd expect me to fill in the gaps of their movie, then ask me to believe they are artistic or a genius for doing so.

I mean, I do have a much more detailed argument for this and I could explain to everyone my reasons for thinking this. Or I could just...

I think it works at times. In V for Vendetta (my new favourite movie icon14.gif) V's face was purposely hidden the entire movie as so not to personafie him. It kept him as a symbol for rebelion and liberty, if we saw his face it would no doublty made his charactor more 'human' but it would of hurt what he represented, the people. He was noone and everyone.

In this case I do agree with you though, Tarintino couldn't explain what was so valuable so instead didn't bother trying. IMO he should have put something worthless in there to add a 'FFS!!' moment however I do think leaving some stuff up to the audience can heighten the experience as it allows the spectator to believe whatever they want, plus it causes these debates which prolongs the movie life.

On topic: I think it was gold, the soul idea doesn't really fit into the movie which is supposed to be set in the real world just with a comic style. It seems too random (or is it mentioned in the movie somewhere?).

Anyone know what the Cloverfield monster was? tounge.gif

What are you talking about?! Filmaker laziness? Thats dumb. Whats in the briefcase is irrelivent to the rest of the story. If it was gold it would be too heavy for the way they constantly lift it and lug it around. I say its the diamonds from reservior dogs biggrin.gif

Good theory, because remember Mr Blonde (Madsen), his name in the film was Vic Vega.

John Travolta's name in Pulp fiction was Vincent Vega wink.gif Coincidence? I think not. The films are connected.

It's more to do with the fact that they expect us to be mulling over it for years to come I don't like.

Anyway I know what was in the briefcase, it was

What I found most interesting is that whatever was in the briefcase, Sam Jackson's character seemed to know what it was the whole time, judging from his reaction when the robber tells him to open it. Now, he's a spiritual guy, but I'm not sure how cool he'd be carrying someone's soul around, even going so far as to risk his own life for it. It's gotta be something more material, for me.

Tarantino didn't even know himself, he laughed at the idea of it being Marsellus' soul, lol.

As far as we know only Vincent and "Pumpkin" have seen the contents, but Jules could have had a peek. wink.gif

Also, to the people saying its gold because of the glow, if you watch the ending scene when he opens the briefcase, you can clearly see where the lights coming from. Just that, a light.

Also why are people putting "soul" in spoiler tags?

Also why are people putting "soul" in spoiler tags?

Why does someone whisper if the person before them does so?

I don't think the contents of the briefcase is meant to be anything specific, its only real use is purely in the story to set up the entire Jules and Vincents part of the film. Trying to put a name on the contents will only ruin some of the films magic, not everything is explained but you accept that and continue with the film.

No offense to anyone on the topic, really, but i always thought the whole "what's inside the briefcase" thing was Tarantino's way of dividing the dumb people who weren't paying attention to the main plot, to those who actually understood what the movie was about, as for me the briefcase was a distraction, because truth to the matter, the briefcase isn't really a plot engine in regards to other movies in which the briefcase which contains money or something else IS important.

Actually for the people that watched the film closely, they're interested in whats in it.

So what you just said about dumb people wanting to know, its actually the other way round, because its the fans wanting to know every last detail.

Read some of mine and others post and we have basically guessed what it is.

I just wanted to make clear i didn't meant any offense, it's just that when i tried to discuss the movie a long time ago all i could find was topics flooding about the contents of the briefcase, which pissed me off considering how great the movie's message and people were talking about the damn briefcase, just my thoughts.

It's the MacGuffin, it is a lazy writing device, but you also have to understand that the entire film is a take-off on pulp novels, ie, more lazy writing.

So Tarantino uses it as a referential joke; nothing more.

Everyone knows Tarantino refers to other films and many other things, but thats taking the michael.

All the other explanations are pretty much legit or at least believeable, but that isnt.

What? Would you care to repeat that in english so that those of us who aren't retarded can understand? tounge.gif Or at least tell me what 'taking the michael' is supposed to mean.

It's a film device, it's cheap, and it's stylish - IE, Tarantino. It's his mission statement, man, a celebration of pop culture and the leftovers of bygone eras. I mean, what, a device to seperate 'good filmgoers' from the 'stupid' ones? MW's soul? Methinks you're missing the point of the entire film.

You know? Taking the mickey? Taking the mick? Never mind.

Anyway, I know what it means, its just (and you can see from his films) Tarantino is a perfectionist, he's not going to intentionally make a part of his film look lazy. confused.gif

EDIT: If you read my other posts, I actually disagreed with the idea of MW soul.

I'm not saying it was a lazy thing for him to do. I'm saying he did it because it was a reference to lazy writing, like the rear projections in the cars was a reference to outmoded, cheaper, filmmaking.

Can I ask how is it plausible? One of the main explanations of his soul being in the briefcase, was that the plaster on the back of his head was where the devil "sucked his soul out"

Now ive already explained, and its common fact, that Ving Rhames (who plays M Wallace) has a scar on the back of his head.

QT didnt want the audience getting distracted by his scar when he's talking to Bruce Willis in the bar, so he put a plaster on it.

Seems to have backfired though, as everyone is thinking its the "devils mark"

No problem man, i understand, just wanted to spill out my thoughts, ANYWAYS, The Mcguffin device sounds like a plausible theory, even when i have just found out what it is biggrin.gif

Anyways it's understandable that many people assumed it was somehow Wallace's soul, clearly the 666 gives you some sort of a hint, and the bandage on the neck also leads to more assumptions.

Can anyone explain me what a pulp novel is dontgetit.gif ??? i didn't really cared for it when i watched the movie, even though i loved it.

I heard about this somewhere too, but it doesn't seem very reliable to me, there is a wonder used in movies today called.................................MAKE UP confused.gif
