GTA4 lighting was supposed to be really good. ever thing was supposed to cast a shadow. now i will say that the lighting in the game is good but i knowdest something. the lighting goes past movable objects.

lighting goes past the car onto the back wall.

same here. the light goes past 2 walls.

It does this to every movable wall. i also like the lighting but how does it work? also you start seeing the flaws after a while.

i think i wold be less work for the system if it only hast to draw the light on one object instead of ever wall it hits. im not a 3d game programmer so i dont know. but i guess its hard to find out what the light hits and stop it.

You've got to admit though, Rockstar has taken their time to make the lighting excellent.

I spent a bit of time checking this out, but I wasn't dissapointed or surprised that objects don't cast a shadow from artificial light. It still looks awesome, and you don't notice this unless you try IMO.

Having lots of moving objects casting lots of shadows could be too much for console´s processor?

Nice find though, have a cookie.gif

If everything casted a shadow and blocked light your game would run like a slideshow.

Maybe in future GTA's when rockstar learns to make their games run smoother they can add more details.

Just look at gta3 --- gta:sa

The graphical difference is immense, on the same ps2 system (or xbox/pc)

I can imagine what they will add to the next GTA installments. Realtime lighting?

Maybe snow effects? accumulation of snow

Maybe hurricane type of weather....that would be fun to see in a GTA 5: vice city...its a good excuse to have the bridges unaccessible also.

The PC version probably will have the lighting system tweaked quite a lot.

Just like the PC version of San Andreas getting real time shadows.

mod it with Nitrous Oxide and chassis dyno.

The lights from the headlights never casted shadows from what I see (prove me wrong?). It's really easy to notice it when you travel down the road and no shadows are casted by any objects you see. Shadows are more consuming than light so no shadow means smoother game.

Can someone please tell me the difference in lighting.. erm.. upgrades? maybe? I dont know how to put it. Example you have HDR lighting and realtime, whats the difference?

Rockstar can't get to everything and they cannot take even more time to create a a better lighting engine.

I don't have a picture for this, but if you climb up one of those men in black saucer tower things in either dusk or dawn, you can usually see niko's shadow, so far away on the ground, climbing up along with you, so can i complain about the lighting? yeah i could, but if i did, i'd be an under-appreciating prick.

The kind of lighting realism ytiou seem to expect is very hard on processors. A small area has a surprisingly large amount of data to remnder it.

But i must say that it does look fairly good, as is.

Of course once the PC version comes out we may see more accurate lighting. The R* rep/guy/wahtever stated that the lighting will be 'improved'. Whether that's more or different calulations or simply nigher laightmap, etc. resolution perhaps you will be satisfied.

But being a PC gamer I'm never satisfied. well.. for a few weeks until the next crazily realistic thing comes along..

Considering the detail in the game already I think if everything cased a shadow the Xbox would not be able to cope with it, though the PS3 might have (not getting into a fanboy thing here, I have an Xbox. And you would have to be retarded to think it has more power than the PS3)

I cant remember if it was Far Cry or S.T.A.L.K.E.R but they have lighting that castes shadows, but when I turned it on on my old PC I went from a nice smooth game at high specs to a jumpy game I had to play on medium-low specs. (think it was probably S.T.A.L.K.E.R cause that was really badly optimized)

Anyway, considering the platform and other details in the game I think the lighting is still amazing. Obviously the 1st game in this trilogy (well, possibly trilogy) is not going to have everything perfect.

These flaws are minor, you're only focusing on the lighting/shadow's bad points. When no-one in this thread has mentioned how you can see your shadow when you're flying a helicopter. Now that, is quality shadow effects! It's little things like that that make the game ultra-realistic, but the little flaws like the couple you pointed out (And fair play for noticing and getting pics) don't matter that much at all. Just remember that you're playing one of 2008's best next-gen games.

this is not the only game that does this. i have seen this in halo 3. its just when rockstare said that i was expecting something like hl2 flashlight.

this does not make the game any less fun but the graphics of a game sould never count tordes game play.

I used to be obsesed with lighting details in video games until I eventually realized that no console game is gonna meet my oh-so high expectations.

I like to go inside the Cabaret club with a car and mess around with the real-time lighting/shadows in there. You should try it OP, it's somewhat entertaining.
