GTA IV: The 1st GTA to not live up to the hype?

...whoops, I get confused when people quote me. Just to fill up this post, I agree *below*.

When it comes to the individual cannons I think Rockstar's intentions are always to move the franchise forward, towards a certain idea.

In the case of IV it appears to be the "living, breathing city" aspect. If so we're likely to see certain new features that progress this idea.

lol well most of us GTA fans expected more extra curricular activities.

You can argue all you want.... no one is wrong.

The single player game is great.... but after that is gone, if you are satisfied driving around and doing the same 3-4 different time passers... then great.

Old GTAs gave me about 20 things to do, so that is all im comparing them by.

I'm not grading it on any other scale other than GTAs own "expectations"

GTA III continues to be my favourite of the franchise except for IV. I still enjoy aimlessly walking around gritty Portland and doing battle with those damn Leone mafiosos.

It really depends on what can keep the player entertained. I, for one, enjoy occasionally playing as if it were real life, meaning driving lawfully, carjacking almost only at night, long walks in Middle Park, etc. I find the level of immersion, that is, that all these peds are actually DOING something, that the game is calculating and processing all these things at once, to be a spectacle. First time I played GTA III, I was about 10, and I spent a good two hours walking around in Portland, not causing trouble, just exploring, seeing what there was to see.

Some people enjoy games with high levels of action; something always needs to be happening to keep them entertained. Once you've completed ANY game 100%, it gets a LOT less "action-packed".

My two cents. Personally, I think IV is great.

Hype is just hype. Hype isn't a measure of how good a game is/was, but how much people wanted it.

to me gta4 is like star wars episode1. you can pump all the money, physics and special effects you want into a product... gtas golden age is over, this isnt to say that 1 2 3 vc sa lcs and vcs don't still own.

I respectfully dissagree with you. I think the golden age is just beging. R* would be fools not to relase expansions for this similar to VC and SA. i foresee i long and bright future. (Please god let me be right).

Rockstar and the media NEVER hyped the game at all. It was always the fans who hyped it and were basically making up a game in their heads and expecting GTA4 to be exactly like the idea they had thought up AKA the be all and end all of games.

Uhmm.. are you on a different universe? Because here on Earth, I was reading a lot of previews from a lot of different magazines and websites that basically flat out lied to us about features. Media didn't hype the game? Yeah, and they never hyped Dark Knight either. lol

So that would be individual reviewers as appose to Rockstar then?

OP your not alone, you may think your the only one because all the 10 year olds bash you here.

gametrailers.com is another story,i`ve never seen so many people dissapointed with a game even the mods there are agreeing.

i supose it`s because their grown up and can "admitt" they were disheartened with it or mabey it`s because they are true to the francise and dont like the new direction.

Actually I am VERY hyped for the next game as this is pretty much the foundations for the new GTA canon. GTA 3 started off the last canon and was very similiar to 4 (except graphics) in the way that it had hardly any features but every new game that came out had new features and eventually they got to SA which of course we all know is a fantastic game.

They pretty much have the graphics and everything all sorted and now they can focus on features for the next one which I think is gonna blow everyone away.

I really like this game and play online EVERDAY for HOURS and it brings me alot of fun.

It's just building blocks......

Wow,

Well I understand that this is the "new" 3 and therefore features "missing" should be in subsequent games, most of the things missing were simply on purpose because it didn't fit Niko's character.

This to me is a huge mistake.

Can I see Niko skateboarding? No... hell no. Should I be able to hop on one? Yes.... f*ck yes.

Niko can't Bike ride because Niko would never ride a bike.

Niko could never have a sweet house with nice cars or a mansion because Niko could never be that rich.

Niko can't pimp out cars because Niko wouldn't care.

Niko would never ever basejump and If he did he shouldn't have a parachute cause Niko doesn't know where to find them.

Niko can't really rob a store because if you take the money from the til, the cashier would never tell Niko to not rob him and apparently magically give him a star as he's leaving.

I am not a Niko hater, don't go there. He is simply my favorite video game character to date.... I am actually making fun of Rock*'s reasons for these things not being in the final product.

Honestly... the only time I feel like I'm playing an old GTA is when I am holed up in a hospital killing everything in sight....no not because im a crazy f*ck...but because it is fun and chaotic.

Old GTA Style.

Well im going to rip apart this retarded logic a bit.

You said that the media hyped the game, when NONE of these features were in any of the Media releases R* or the "media" made.

and FYI, the internet DOES NOT count as the media, the people on the internet had lack of information just like the fanboys did.

I was already bored of IV once I beat it 100%. I mean, what am I gonna do? Just kill people and run from cops. Gets boring quickly, unless you're easily amused.

So should we lock you in a room, with GTA 1 for 6 hours?

Before R* spoiled everyone with fancy features, this is all we could do. I can remember all the times in 1998 I had just causing mayhem in GTA 1, and you know what? It was fun, and still is.

I've been playing IV multiplayer, and I've had alot more fun then I ever did in SA. I actually prefer multiplayer as a whole to all of SA's features. When I'm playing deathmatch, team deathmatch, turf wars etc it feels like a GTA game should be.

IMO the replacement for everything that was lost is multiplayer. As for the hype, well as far as I'm concerned people only have themselves to blame.

I never read previews for the simple fact that most of it is bullsh*t, but they know how gullible most people are, so they can get away with it. In other words most people fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

It met my on personal "hype" anyway.

I hear ya, the internet drove most of the hype.

I am not ripping on R* for "Hyping" the game too much.

To say that R* didn't mean to .... well of course they did... any company would...

Saying the media and R* had nothing to do with the hype is retarded (which is what I said)

Anyways you are asking me to lock myself in a room and play GTA I then play GTA IV... I bought GTA I when it came out.... a long time ago.

This is not 1998... this is 2008 (as if you didn't know) and sorry.. you saying "at least it has more features than GTA I" well c'mon ...are you serious?

Also no one seems to notice that I praise GTA IV as possibly one of the best games I have ever played.

The only comparison I am making is against the standards R* laid out for itself.

Sure....driving around and doing the same old 5 things after the game is beat is fine for some people, I can understand that....

at the same time you people flame someone who wants more GTA IV (myself) and honestly it seems most of you have hit the worst type of Fanboy possible...

The type that ignores anything (true or not) regarding something that may come off negative towards the thing they like...

You are no better than console fanboys. (not necessarily directed towards the person I'm replying to)

I personally will instead do something creative and recommend things via forums (which R* reads BTW) and voice the fact that this game held my interest less than any other GTA before it (not including I or II)

And before you take that out of context (since fanboys need to be coddled) By interest I mean after beating the game...post single player experience.

I am sorry but the way you people act in here I kind of wonder if most of you are old enough to buy the game w/o adult supervision.

GTA : San Andreas is the best selling game of all-time in the United States

Think about that.

A lot more people enjoy being able to do many things as opposed to doing very little things.

Carl Vercetti

I decided to forego reading all the replies and just respond to the original post.

It's actually the opposite for me. After San Andreas, my interest for GTA was waning, especially since SA was somewhat of a let-down for me. I wasn't hyped at all about IV and I wasn't sure what Rockstar could do to interest me, especially since Saint's Row already did San Andreas twice as pretty as they ever hoped. I bought it because I was curious, and honestly, because I'm a grandtheftauto fanboy at heart.

But now I'm more hyped about the next GTA than I ever was for San Andreas.

Sadly, I think those of you who don't like the new style are in the majority, so you'll probably win this one. Either way, I hope you choke. =)

ROFL what?

600 million copys the 1st week?...you are hilarious.

Anyways the gentleman you were speaking to was referring to all time sales not 1st week sales... as if it's possible to sell 600 million copies in the 1st week.

I don't think GTA IV will end up selling as many, but I could be wrong. Word of mouth isn't that great on this one. Most friends of mine are borrowing out their copy's after beating it since there isn't much else to do.

I love the game, but I feel like it did not live up to the hype. Still a solid game for VC's first GTA on the next generation systems.
