GTA IV: The 1st GTA to not live up to the hype?

Hey there,

Anyone else notice that now GTA IV is out ( and you've played it to hell, single and multiplayer.... ) that GTA no longer really hypes you up?

The previous GTAs always kept me hyping for the next one, but I personally think R* has lost its old direction. I am a GTA fanboy.

It's really hard to say they have lost their direction, there was a lot of things done better in GTA IV than any other game before it.....some might even say it was the first true Next Gen title, though that is debatable.

The story line was better, the graphics were amazing some of the options were improved. Why wouldn't anyone be excited for the next one?

Well, the main problem is the new direction they decided to take GTA....the "realistic" one...the one that doesn't let me base jump, pimp hoes, own nice buildings, etc.

The idea behind it was good but not thoroughly thought out and honestly GTA IV is boring post game. This to me was the huge surprise.

I'm honest. I am not going to like a game just because of the name or because it is made by a certain company. I am not going to pretend that this game has more features then it does. I am barely even able to call GTA IV a sandbox game, which is sad since GTA defined and created the sandbox genre.

There are good pro's and con's against the sandbox statement I just made, but I think most true GTA players know what I mean.....where is the extra curricular activities, R*??

Anyways, this wasn't meant to be a rant.... I am just not really hyped like I used to be and haven't picked up the game for over a month. GTA San andreas was played under my roof for a year and a half. GTA IV?.... 2 months.....because I am bored.

That's about it.

Actually I am VERY hyped for the next game as this is pretty much the foundations for the new GTA canon. GTA 3 started off the last canon and was very similiar to 4 (except graphics) in the way that it had hardly any features but every new game that came out had new features and eventually they got to SA which of course we all know is a fantastic game.

They pretty much have the graphics and everything all sorted and now they can focus on features for the next one which I think is gonna blow everyone away.

I really like this game and play online EVERDAY for HOURS and it brings me alot of fun.

It's just building blocks......

You want to know my opinion? Get the f*ck over it.

If you dont want to play it, dont, and stay off the forums.

Most people here are probably bored of defending this game. Prepare for flaming.

For me, it lived up to the media's hype, if not surpassed it. But the hype which fans had created from years of fun with previous GTAs has made people disappointed in the lack of features.

Multiplayer makes up for some of the features I miss, so I'm cool with having limited single player features.

Agreed.

Rockstar and the media NEVER hyped the game at all. It was always the fans who hyped it and were basically making up a game in their heads and expecting GTA4 to be exactly like the idea they had thought up AKA the be all and end all of games.

If you don't like the game no point coming on a forums dedicated to a game you DON'T like and bitching about it.

Ask yourself this. Who actually cares on this forum about your opinion regarding the game and how you dislike it? Who actually gives a sh*t and is gonna put their day on hold for you?

Don't like it don't play it. End of.

Wow,

Well I understand that this is the "new" 3 and therefore features "missing" should be in subsequent games, most of the things missing were simply on purpose because it didn't fit Niko's character.

This to me is a huge mistake.

Can I see Niko skateboarding? No... hell no. Should I be able to hop on one? Yes.... f*ck yes.

Niko can't Bike ride because Niko would never ride a bike.

Niko could never have a sweet house with nice cars or a mansion because Niko could never be that rich.

Niko can't pimp out cars because Niko wouldn't care.

Niko would never ever basejump and If he did he shouldn't have a parachute cause Niko doesn't know where to find them.

Niko can't really rob a store because if you take the money from the til, the cashier would never tell Niko to not rob him and apparently magically give him a star as he's leaving.

I am not a Niko hater, don't go there. He is simply my favorite video game character to date.... I am actually making fun of Rock*'s reasons for these things not being in the final product.

Honestly... the only time I feel like I'm playing an old GTA is when I am holed up in a hospital killing everything in sight....no not because im a crazy f*ck...but because it is fun and chaotic.

Old GTA Style.

I am not bashing GTA IV.

What I am saying is (as the largest GTA fan in this effing city) GTA IV was no San Andreas.... It was the week I bought it but months later, it just isn't.

End of story.

Great game missing a ton of subsistence..... that is what GTA is.....an unlimited sandbox.

Can you see CJ a GANGSTAAAA YEH GHETTO BOIIII riding a skateboard? No? And since when could you skateboard in GTA....

A poor gangster living in 'the hood' can be that rich, have sweet cars and a mansion by just killing people?

Yet again, a low respecting gangster from 'the hood' would know where a parachute is and then go base jumping?

Keep your cash for SR2.

There, you've answered your own question. You don't care what we think, and we don't care what you think.

So why post? You must know by now (if you had the internet... or a brain) that you're the millionth person to post about the game being "hyped too much" and being sooo dissapointed in it.

Go and play SA. You'll clearly enjoy it more than IV. And while you're doing that, stay out the IV forums and frequent the SA forums instead. Mmmkay?

agreeable but somehow i think your blaming it on the wrong thing. the added "realism" isnt what made many of those features you and many others like go poof. what caused that was them just not adding those in, which is rather sad, I had hopes that you would be able to go as far as modifying the engine in your car in gta 4: sadly many of these things have been removed, and i just get the creeping feeling that might have been because it was primarily released for consoles, or perhaps the release was behind schedule and some things were axed.

The first GTA game to let me down was actually San Andreas! Magazines and Rockstar confirmed soo many things that got cut from the final game it was annoying, and the way articles stated you could see for miles and miles with no loading screens, f*ck that, the PS2 had terrible Draw Distance, someone obviously had Rose Tinted Glasses on when they wrote that.

I was already bored of IV once I beat it 100%. I mean, what am I gonna do? Just kill people and run from cops. Gets boring quickly, unless you're easily amused.

I really liked GTA IV but I don't see why people keep saying the game is realistic. Is it realistic to jump 20-30 feet out of the air only to roll out of it and not get hurt? Is it realistic to not have monster trucks or parachutes while they exists in real life? The vehicle damage (R.A.G.E. engine) isn't entirely realistic as the tires don't fall off the vehicle under heavy impact (they just fuse with the car and stick out above the wheel guards or hood). Euphoria isn't entirely realistic either as sometimes you shoot somebody in the back of the legs up close with a shotgun they don't fall over and only bend over, clutch his/her stomach, and walks off. The graphics also don't live up to other games and aren't perfect (character models aren't perfect as is you zoom into somebody's face with a sniper or using the camera on the phone you can see the teeth look like they are made of paper. The graphics and physics are a lot more realistic than previous GTAs but the game is still nowheres close to realistic. I'm not flaming the game, I love the game and I got what I paid for, but the term 'realistic' is used to a such a divine degree on these forums that it makes the game seem like it is exactly like real life. It is more like Hollywood movie life than real life. Also, I'm sure the game didn't live up to some peoples' expectations because of the game being the first of a new GTA canon and thus meaning it will most likely be from the ground up again (like the GTA III canon).

Once R* realizes that GTA fans didn't like the realistic approach, then R* will make the next GTA unrealistic like the old ones. So if anything, you should be more hyped for the next GTA that usual, because we will get to experience the old GTA fun again, except this time with Euphoria and the good graphics and all that other good stuff.

Unless EA buys R*.

P.S. There are tons of topics EXACTLY like this one, and each one is even more f*cking stupid than the next. So why don't you idiots give it a f*cking break already?!

To TheSamurai Hobo:

It's not that we can't take constructive criticism, it's that we've seen the same f*cking criticism posted a billion motherf*cking times, and it's just annoying now. GTA4 was too realistic, we f*cking get it. So why the hell don't people stop making topics like this already?!

i think he is right (fishermanGTA), when the guy who made this topic dont have any more fun playing gta 4 then stop playing it ,why make a new topic just to say what like 20 other people already did.and i'll say it again there are 2 dlc coming out for the xbox 360 and the game is coming to pc and also ps3 users can wait coming something for them too so...i dont know what people really expect from a game ...start the first mission and fly planes, make skydiving and drivin' around whit a tank or what???and about the guy who says when you beat the game 100% there is nothing else to do then the MP...well how about making some stunts, making some funny stuff ,what about doing something like that.I respect your opinions about the game but... mercie_blink.gif

I've said it before and i'll say it again. GTAIV was not too realistic. realism is nothing to do with it. There just isn't enough to do, realistic or otherwise.

When people say realism... they aren't calling it realistic.

Rockstar themselves talked about feature changes to make it more "realistic"

That is what we are talking about, we aren't calling the game too real... etc.... we are using Rockstars own words.

They said certain features weren't implemented because who could imagine Niko doing these things.

Well you could argue that when SA introduced them, they became GTA features. But either way it isn't relism that is the issue. There's lots of things they could have put in there without having to use all the 'unconventional' stuff that they had in SA.

Non-traditional I think, since only one out of the many GTAs has it. GTA4 lives up to the hype of creating a game that actually works. The dramatic improvements on basic gameplay like driving and shooting makes this game fun. I would rather get a game that works instead of having tons of minigames with weak gameplay mechanics. There are tons of feature and improvements in GTA4 that no other GTA has. How can GTA4 disappoint you to the point of not liking the game at all?

The reason why people are bored is because there is nothing to spend your money on ingame. That is all.

I was building my argument up to say this before I got sidetracked by a member of the local fishing club taking a piss outside my window.

You'll find no argument from me on this one. IV has such a solid base that it's the gameplay mechanics that make the game fun.

That's not to say it couldn't have done with a little more..something.

Yet the freedom the new gameplay and euphoria engine gives you adds so much more enjoyment to the simple things.

It's an enjoyable game in it's own right and a great platform for Rockstar to go on and move the franchise forward.
