as far as cost, I would have to say

I am happy with my $307 machine.

I have twice the card a 360 has, as much video ram as the whole 360 has, plus my 2 gigs mobo ram,

and my processor, well it's a 5.6 gig fricken processor..

 

how much does a 360 cost?

 

 

I mean without a hard drive... because I already had a hard disk.

you know you can buy used games for the same price or lower than the pc version. and it still takes less time to get a cheap used gta 4 than w8 for it to come out on pc. console gaming really is cheaper.

 

edit: when it comes to games that are for both console and pc vs of the game that are big and commercial

 

whats i mean is pc only games will never be cheaper or more expansive

If you want to use the argument of "wait a bit and you can buy second hand", then I can equally say "wait a bit and you can buy brand new a lot cheaper".

 

At the end of the day is cost my number one concern ? Nope it isn't. My number one concern is framerates and good graphics and getting the best gaming experience I can get. Some people mistake me for a PC fanboy, I can tell you now if the consoles offered me the same gaming experience I get from my PC's then I would quickly be a console fanboy. That was one of the reasons why I got a 360, I wanted to see if the grass was greener on the other side.

 

I can say the grass most certainly is not greener, I don't know how anyone can play games on those god awful machines. I mean maybe I have high standards but I am not joking if I had a PC that performed at the same level as a 360 the thing would get upgraded in a shot and that is before I even mention the god awful noise making dvd drive.

 

I suppose it all comes down to standards, I expect more out of my gaming hobby, I am not happy to settle for 1280 x 720 @ 20-30fps. I am not happy to use auto aim because the joypad is such an imprecise device with which to play with. I am not happy to have to pay for online gaming when it should be free. Oh and I am certainly not happy to accept a machine that has a DVD drive that sounds like an asteroid hitting a tank every 2 seconds.

 

So I will be supremely happy when the 21st November is here and I can play GTA 4 how I feel it should be played and I will never touch GTA on the console again, even if that means I have to abandon the GTA franchise completely. To me GTA + PC is the sweet spot and always will be.

I don't think your expectations are too high, I think it's just the difference between those that can accept low perfomance / graphics in games and those that know and realize how they should be played. Some might prefer consoles for any given reason, but for someone to say they perform better than any med to high end PC is just pure madness.

can we turn this thread into a social study? i have some theories based on time, technology, and society. i believe alot of what camp people fanatisize with is due to how and when they are introduced to gaming. then it just becomes engraved into their stubborn personalities like people who only drink one brand of beer. i don't mean to offend, but think of the american meathead that only drinks budweiser and will till the day he dies.

Thats what I like about PC gaming. Sure, the community can be a little immature at times, but overall its nowhere near like console gaming. It's also worth noting that new PC games drop in price quickly much faster than console games. It's like one month a game is like $40 and it's $20 the next or so unless it's some kind of special edition/version, where I live, at least.

Why is it so hard to accept ? I do not like second hand stuff. If I am handing over money I want NEW untouched stuff, I don't want people's cast offs. That probably makes me look a right snob (and greenpeace will probably bang my door down and tell me to be more "environmental") but I am sorry I just do not like buying stuff people have, for want of a better term "chucked out". Oh and the quality of the second hand discs is a concern. I have seen lots of complaints from people saying their experience of GTA 4 is being ruined because the discs are becoming worn and scratched (big surprise eh a game like GTA should NEVER be run from DVD).

I never said gaming on a console wasn't easy. It couldn't actually get any easier all they have to do is insert disc and scratch arse and away you go. I would still argue cost wise there isn't much in it. I still believe over the life span of a console you will probably spend more than I do if you buy at least 1 retail game a month. That doesn't even take into account repairs, if your console blows out of warranty you have to buy a whole new console. If my PC breaks I can fix it myself just for the cost of the parts. But I don't think we are ever going to agree, on this matter myself.

I would probably play on more platforms myself if there was anything of interest, the only game I was interested in on the console was GTA 4. Everything else I want to play is coming out on the PC. So I really have no need to be a multiplatform gamer.

 

This is the thing that bugs me about consoles, they do their damndest to force people into buying different devices and here is the good bit, people PRAISE them for it. If you had to have 3 different TV's in your house because certain channels only supported certain TV's you would be up in bloody arms about it all. But ohhh no not the damn consoles, nope people go "oh woooohooo blah blah is exclusive to blah blah". Really console gamers need to wake up and smell what they are standing in. Charlie I freakin <3 you I couldn't word that any better, that's exactly what PC vs. Console is. I have the standards you do. I can't stand anything lower than 1440x900 and less than 30fps (unless it's Crysis, that's smooth at even 15fps). I bought my custom made rig for this reason, and my 8800 GTX has shown me what real gaming is. I own a NES and a Gamecube from back in the day, and now I look back and see the quality/performance/replayability is very low on consoles.

BTW you're saying like all of the people on the console are 12 year old noobs, believe m, as much as I played on my PC, and yes I do have a whole bunch of PC games, there were more tards than I have ever seen, for example: Counter strike: source, WoW, Day of defeat: source, Battlefield 2, a whole bunch of need for speed games that I regret buying, and so on. After seeing what people are like on those games and on a console I changed my mind. There are less tards on a console believe me. To sum it all up, Console aren't bad! PCs aren't bad, one might want to buy a console, the other might want to buy a PC because those might be the things that give them an erection! I agree that the Consoles can not be upgraded, but Hey I'll just buy a new one in a few years time when it's released, I'm happy with the simplicity of the console, others are happy with the complicated wares and programs on the computer and I know my way good enough through both. You see, there are second hand games for PC also. You can check ebay and find out that you can buy second had PC titles for 2$ to 5$ easily. sh*t, even brand new (albeit older) go for sums such as 5 or 10$ US.

 

Plus, one needs to get some low cost not to be trusted hardware (being the console) and probably a brand new HD TV. Let's be honest, most people don't have those and you really need the HD TV to enjoy the "HD" console output.

 

Let's take me and my friend as an example. He bought a PS3, HD TV (Sony also) and around ten games. He sold some and traded the others, they usually go for a half price. His total was around 3000$. Things are a bit more expensive here and he usually doesn't pay with cash, so I gets even more expensive.

 

I, on the other hand, am assembling a new PC which will run all the newest PC titles on max easily (including the acclaimed console ports, excluding such games as Crysis). It will cost some 1500$ (including a nice 20" Samsung monitor) since I deal with good old cash and don't poay any extra when I don't need to. If I buy another 10 PC games for 35$ average price per game, that's another 350$. All in all, not even 2000$.

 

So how is console gaming less expensive? Please, do tell.

I am against THIS implementation of consoles, it causes nothing but trouble for the industry having 3-4 formats is a complete and utter waste of resources. Just consider how many games you could buy if you didn't have to spend $300 on a 360 $400 on a PS4, $200 on a Wii and $1000 on a PC. This can all be done without losing competition.

There is no reason why Sony or MS could not do a PC compatible console either, for about the same cost as the consoles they have now. Want to know why they won't do it ? Because they lose control and they would lose a sh*tload of money. So they are screwing you royally but here is the best part. As astonishing as it seems console gamers not only thank them for this they f*cking love them for it. They even pick sides !!!!!! Sony and MS must be laughing their arse off at this gamers.

 

If you think this current implementation of console gaming is "great" then you really must like wasting money. I got sucked in and thankfully got back out again. I will not touch console gaming again until the console users start showing some f*cking brains and stop taking it up the arse or till MS/Sony do something constructive for the games industry instead of trying to segregate it, water it down and cripple it with mass market rubbish.

nope sticking with the 360, Why on earth would i want to play GTAIV on PC same mediocre game different system, The only reason i brought a new PC was to play spore now thats a game that your not going to get on a console. Thats a game that is new and not done before unlike GTAIV witch they pulled out of the recycling bin thrown away all the good stuff then packaged it again and sold it to the general public.

 

Cummon you guys tell me the truth, you are only going to buy this so you can mod it and make it into the game it should be with all the missing features ( if you guys do that then i may get it). but it really isnt worth getting a new PC just to play this game.

no its not, i want games that are made once and can run on more things than just a pc. A movie DVD can run off my pc but i still have a DVD player on my tv. lets say i have a low powered laptop and i did not want to buy a gaming pc because of money room ect. i could just get something that is less power full but i can still play the game. and for a lot of people just playing the game works, not if your hardcore but for other people it will. Also game company would not haft to wast there resources if they only had to make it once.

If all else fails you can still rent console games, something you cant do on a pc. this is what my friend did. this works for some people.

I was not forced , i wanted a 360 so i happily handed over my cash and am more than happy with the machine. Saying i am 'forced' to buy a 360 to play gta4 is idiotic. Thats like buying a microwave meal and then moaning that you have to 'take it up the ass' from Sharp by having to buy their microwave to cook it.

I didnt buy a 360 just for gta4, i saw the wealth of games also available and thought i would like one. I have a PC also, its fairly decent spec and i play games on it too, but i can happily own both without constantly comparing graphics or whatever. They are just machines at the end of the day.

I own a 24" IMac (Don't even start on how Macs aren't good when it comes to games because I know that), I plan on buying a copy of Windows XP down the road to duel boot on this hell of a machine just to play IV. That's IV and nothing more than IV because I'm not a big PC gamer hence why I bought a Macintosh. It'll look great on this comp. too It has the specs to top most of the games on the market right now.

I'll prob. just buy all the games I want on the 360 first (Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, Rock Band and Guitar Hero, and the GTAIV DLC) then sometime in 2009 get enough money to buy Windows XP, GTAIV (PC) and while I'm at It I'll buy a ram upgrade. with a grand total of around $420.

I didnt buy a 360 just for gta4, i saw the wealth of games also available and thought i would like one. I have a PC also, its fairly decent spec and i play games on it too, but i can happily own both without constantly comparing graphics or whatever. They are just machines at the end of the day.

I was forced to buy a 360, I have TWO PC's that are easily capable of playing GTA 4 but thanks to these "exclusive" deals it was held off my platform of choice. So I did not CHOOSE a 360 I had to buy one to carry on playing the franchise I have enjoyed for so many years.

 

Let's look at your analogy shall we, let's say you buy a Microwave to cook food. You then find out that the microwave you bought can only cook certain types of food, to cook other types of food you need another microwave that is exactly the same as the one you have it just has a different bloody name on. Now would you be going "oh goodie what a good idea" or would you be thinking "what kind of dickhead thought this would be a good idea".

 

Now great you bought a 360 and you can play games, oh no wait you can't if you want to play MGS4, Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and Little Big Planet you have to go out again and buy yet another console. This is inspite of the fact you have a perfectly good games machine there already that can play games but because of exclusive deals you have to buy ANOTHER console. The fact you can't see how absolutely retarded this all is just shows what a number Sony and MS have pulled on you guys

as i said before, if it makes money there will never be one of them. life not fare and you know that. also no one was holding a gun up to your head and told you to buy a 360. Here in the usa we haft to pay like 10 cents a text msg (unless you get unlimited or like 2000 with plain). And that is a total rip off but people still pay for it any way. they could just pay for data and use just use that. but they don't. why you ask? its because it's convenient and they have a community around it. same thing with consoles. but im not going to say they suck, even if it is a big rip off i still use them. (kind of, i still like community)

I was not forced , i wanted a 360 so i happily handed over my cash and am more than happy with the machine. Saying i am 'forced' to buy a 360 to play gta4 is idiotic. You are acting like anything being exclusive is evil and is the work of the devil. And i dont appreciate you judging me saying MS have pulled one on me. I simply wanted a 360 to play games on, same way you wanted to buy parts for your PC to play games on. I dont prefer one over the other, if i had a high spec PC i would probably play it on that, but i just cant be arsed with it.

Yes I was forced too and by forced I don't mean "had gun to my head" there are other forms of coercion you know. It doesn't all get done at the end of a gun barrel. Did I want an Xbox 360 ? Erm no why should I, I have a PC twice as powerful as the 360. Did I want to play GTA 4 ? Well yes since I have been a fan of the series since it's birth on the PC. Was there any hint of GTA 4 coming to the PC ? No there was not and it looked incredibly unlikely there would be a PC version. Put that all together and yes I consider I was forced to purchase a 360 because I wanted to play a franchise that started on the PC.

Why should you NOT want to play those games, by all accounts Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 look to be pretty fantastic. If you are a fan of FPS games it is difficult to see why you wouldn't want to play these games. However thanks to exclusivity if you want to play them you have to fork out another $400 to have the honour of doing so even though you already have a perfectly capable to play them on. If MGS4, Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 came to the PC then yes I would love to play them. However I refuse to get sucked into this petty pathetic exclusivity crap.

I wouldn't say "evil" I believe all they do is shaft the end consumer ie YOU. But Sony and MS have done such a great job they have even convinced the consumer that exclusives are GOOD for them. You even see the console users holding exclusives up like some sort of medal followed by statements like "ha ha you can't play blah blah 30 because it's exclusive". All exclusives do is reduce the choice for the gamer and force gamers to spend more money than they really need too. But the staggering thing about it all is we have console gamers grinning and thinking it's the best thing since sliced bread. That is why I say MS and Sony have done a right little number on you and other console gamers. They actively reduce your choice and force you to pay more and you actually thank them and think the sun shines out of their arses for it.

Now are you sure about that and it isn't translucantly liquidfied enjoy it whilst it lasts I am sure if Sony or MS have their way they will make "wet" exclusive to their specific machine if they can.

 

To be honest I will stick with the PC from now on, I made the mistake of getting GTA 4 and a console to play it. I won't ever do it again, I do not care if the next GTA 5 is a console exclusive I am not going to waste money on a machine that doesn't play games to the same standard that my £500 PC does.

no one forced you to do anything. you could have w8ted a bit longer to see the pc one coming out. don't blame Microsoft/Sony for you jumping to gun and being a early adopter for this game. now your defence is that these contracts are not fare, can you please tell me when a company signed a contract that was fare for all? yeah it would be nice if everything was one, yeah it would be nice if there was a standards. but thats not true right now so im going to get my ps3 and wii. this is why i said in the past that i dont like it when video games and money mix.(was not on this form, i posted this on a non commercial stand alone game developer form)

I don't know how much simpler I can make this. Did I want a 360 ? No I did not want a 360, infact the 360 now resides in the shed propping the lawn mower up. I wanted to play a pc franchise that I had played for 10 years. The only way to do that was by buying a console so yes I was coerced into getting something I didn't really want. Yes I should blame MS because it is MS that made sure that it created enough uncertainty about the PC version to con people into buying their console.

 

You keep bringing up "fairness" I never said this was fair or that it is unfair. My point is to say console gaming is the best is a load of rubbish. If console gaming is the best why do MS and Sony have to pour billions into securing exclusives or making certain titles exclusive to their specific platform and keeping them off the PC for as long as they can ? I mean surely if console gaming is so great there is no reason to delay the PC version of GTA 4 for nearly a year. Oh wait yes there is, that Peter Zetterburg told us if they release a game on the consoles and pc simultaneously then people will most likely buy the PC version. Hm doesn't seem to me that console gaming is so great then.

 

As for why I feel so strongly about this, well I have been a gamer for 25 years and in those 25 years I have seen gaming go from a fantastic form of entertainment into a money grabbing, user shafting pathetic shell of it's former self. The games used to be about bringing the best experience possible to as many as possible. Now it is just about meeting specific deals and fulfilling specific contracts and the end user instead of showing they aren't happy they praise the hell out of these companies.
