Slamman
I've had a Smart Computing magazine for a few noteworthy subjects, including How the Internet Works and for Windows ME when it was the latest OS, in fact. One of the last periodicals I bought from them is on Files of all sorts, and while they have a file extension glossery, it's not up on all the extensions that I seem to run into. Let's use this thread to discuss various ones we wonder about or are having some issues with, even. One that puzzles me currently is stored in XP whenever my digital movies from my digital still camera are moved to folders on my computer or laptop. That extension is .THM What does this file entail? I find it utterly useless, so I delete it. I figure it is used internally by Windows and many files are, like Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs) I saw this file again in a program app. I was browsing on a troublesome HDD, in Safe mode. I planned to move files from that drive to USB thumb/flash and it's working in Safe mode, so I'm happy on that front. Typically 9X (Win 95-98-ME) OS under Safe mode don't allow you access to ext. ports and even D drives can fall silent. That's another problem I face a lot, however. In this case, some Extension definitions should aid all who are not intimate with Windows
kingvercetti
.thm is a thumbnail file, it shows the little thumbnails of all the images you see. If you delete it, Windows just regenerates it next time you look in the folder in a view mode that shows thumbnails.
Slamman
That just shows up for the short movie files, and I think thumbs show up anyway. I never see THMs show up after deletion. I'll watch, I assume that's with the folder open. When it's showing thumbs on top of a folder, it's typically the last photos added, and only four. Slamman: Video thumbnails are mostly created on Digital Video Cams as well as Digital cams that capture video; THM files(Video Thumbnail File) sometimes you may or not be able to transfer to other computers depending on what type of software is being used to import the video: Note: THM file shares the same filename as the video clip it belongs to, so you will see files like these: clip001.AVI" and clip001.THM. follow by clip002.AVI" and clip002.THM. and so on. I beleive they're either hidden or stored elsewhere, because Disk Cleanup gives you the option to delete all thumbnails, and when you do then go back to a folder with lots of images or videos, you see it run through making the thumbs. The ones Windows creates are .db files called Thumbs.db, .thm is usually thumbnails for images on other third-party non-ms stuff.
kingvercetti
Oh that's right, I got muddled up. I remember now, .THMs can accompany MP4 videos for devices like the PSP, which obviously shows thumbnails.
Slamman
I was looking over a disposed Dell Dimension I got days ago and it had the same THM files that were not assigned to movies or any other picture file. That drive was a bootleg XP Pro, BTW, and not a WinME install but it was plagued with the most viruses I've ever seen, over 20 errors so the free trial software they put on it wouldn't heal the drive. I erased it with FDISK and started over! They could have saved the PC if they had wanted to, now I got another...but anywho, I rarely like files created during transfers like that that just create eyesore when managing folders, I've yet to have them recreated that I can tell, when I do delete them
