Slamman
Schenker came up in the guitar thread, and it is widely known that guitarists greatly respect him Alas, sadly, the general public did not catch on, despite the popularity of Scorpions and UFO. I am making a much needed appreciation thread for the band bearing his name I had came across a promo clip from his band's debut and it recorded from 1980 thru the 1990s and continues in some fashio today, as well. Schenker notorious for his drinking and some drug abuse (I gather) had a personality that conflicts with many others he has worked with, but nothing surpassing the importance of the ROCK he has bestowed upon the World All Hail Herr Schenker!! Enjoy some sampling! This is a promo from his first album, rare treat on YT!! And... -=-=-= With vocalist Robin McAuley and a lineup change, 1990... Venom
He was set to place a gig where I live but the band (MSG) had to pull out for some reason. About halfway through that night my dad gets a call up and is told he's playing a solo set - I went along with him. Myspace video which my dad shot on his phone. Afterwards, he said he's never done anything like it in his life - I was very impressed with his playing.
nabo45
I woulden't call myself a hardcore MSG fan, but I love Michael Schenker's guitar playing. He's amazing! MSG - Into The Arena Edit: Here's a vid of MSG from 2007, what the f*ck was up with the guy during that show? Slamman
Since you're a Yardie, I now have a reason to join! hahaha Schenker kicks many an ass. I love how fans have contributed to YouTube, there are new vids popping up all the time, and I tend to forget that. I saw a video I had seen VH1 use once, but never the complete video. With that Hammersmith show in 1984, where he's joined by The Scorpions, there is a Japanese LaserDisc as well as burned DVD of the complete show, without the USA/Chrysalis Vestron video edits that made the USA version, that was lame, but the first VHS tape I ever owned!!! Yeah, some poor performances were seen and reported, but this is Feb, 10th, 08! Edited August 16, 2008 by Slamman
nabo45
Yeah, it's like an on-and-off condition, I think . Dunnos. Glad he got his skills back, and I really hope they stop by Denmark sometime, I'd love to see him live. Meh, not gonna happen... I guess I'm just gonna have to view YouTube vids for the rest of my life... . Please come play live in Denmark Michael.. Herr Schekner - Attack of the Mad Axeman Btw, you know anything about Michael's signature Dean guitar? I've been thinking of buying it, when I get the money which shouldent take long. http://deanguitars.com/schenker_usa.htm
Slamman
Funny enuff, I was thinking on his worst (drunk) day, Schenker either plays better then me, or on the same level, perhaps! haha He signed my BC Rich Bich...the first one I owned. nabo45
Hehe, you're lucky dude. I wish I had a Bich... or even a Mockingbird. Both awesome guitars. Still got the signed one, or did you also pawn that one? Btw, do you know if their new album "In the Midst of Beauty" is worth buying, or even listening to? I mean it's with Gary Barden, so the vocals should be ok. I'm more concerned on Michael's playing, because AFAIK the album was recorded while he had like, no skills at all. Dunnos. MSG - Armed and Ready Awesome f*ckin song..
Slamman
It just shows it's a fine art to play guitar as well as Michael. He spent all his time playing when he was young, then his personal crisis took away from that, he's a fragile soul and I can relate. Doesn't take much outside meddling to mess with one who's tempermental like Michael. Some say he's his own worst enemy... but I hope he can dedicate himself when he needs to and of course, get help with managing the bottle and other demons. He needs a tight family influence, and I think Rudy is just that. I've yet to keep abrest of the new album... I'll buy it. In the mean time, I am currently listening to the Unforgiven Tour Live 2 CD set, and then there's the Werewolves in London Live CDs with UFO...in Reunion form, both are excellent live trackers! nabo45
Bump!! Come on, there gotta be more Schenker fans than me, Slammy and Venom. Anyway, right now I'm listening through the "Happy Birthday Klaus" bootleg by McAuley Schenker Group. It's awesome, Robin McAuley has an amzing voice, and it sounds so good together with Schenker's guitar. It's just a shame that they play it in e-flat tuning, all the songs sounds so "dark" or deep or whatever you call it. Slamman
If you're a musician, or even a TRUE hard rock music fan, you MUST know and HEAR this guy. Schenker is as dedicated to the music craft as David Gilmour. In fact, he turned down high profile gigs to play his way, his music! Even Ozzy wanted Schenker to join him. I was going to make a thread on Zakk Wylde versus Randy Rhoads, because often, the debates get lively there! I also think poor Jake E. Lee gets the cold shoulder, but he proved himself away from Ozzy with Badlands...also underrated. If it weren't for Leslie West, who knows where Schenker would be! Leslie, of Mountain fame, was a major influence for young Michael Schenker. Glad to see Mountain again out on tour as well. I remember the "Love is Not a Game" video, I didn't have MTV and would have killed to see that clip at the time. I was missing out! My first concert was MSG and Armored Saint at the First Ave night club! Splendid! Even my older sister showed up at that gig, the one and only time I saw her at a show I attended. Don Garcia aka NjNakedSnake
Even my older sister showed up at that gig, the one and only time I saw her at a show I attended. Slamman has a sister, an older sister.... Hm, and now we know even more about you're life. Interesting.
Slamman
Yes, Don, I have one brother, two sisters and a mom and dad. Cool ain't it? No broken home history here. I applaud Nabo45, however, he should have gone with CaptNemo for his name/handle! Edited November 16, 2008 by Slamman
nabo45
MSG - Cry For the Nations Do any of you guys know what album that song is from? All I know is that it's by MSG and from 95, but I can't find any info about it.
Slamman
I thought you were throwing a quiz out there! That's easy, the first two MSG albums are rather confusing. You need to look for M.S.G. as well as Michael Schenker Group, on Chrysalis Records... both have Gary Barden and are masterpieces. MSG Assault Attack has Rainbow vocalist Graham Bonnet, who was such a personality handful that he didn't last. Cozy Powell on drums up to 1984. He sadly, passed away. There's Built To Destroy as well with Barden returning, and of course, high pipe singer Robin McAuley who sang on a number of subsequent LPs/CDs. There's an acoustic Toshiba/EMI import release with color booklet, very spendy but I listen to it still... try and hunt that one down!! nabo45
No man, it's defiantly not the original version. It's some re-record with another singer, and it's not Barden. I can know his voice anywhere. And as I said it's from 95, after Robin McAuley and Schenker split up the McAuley Schenker Group, so he's not singing either. Sad thing about Cozy passing away though, I remember watching VH1 Rock's, Michael Schenker edition, whatever it was. And they were talking about Cozy Powell, and how he passed away. Sucks really, he was by far the best drummer MSG ever had. When he was behind the drums, the whole band was on f*ckin' fire man, he rocked! Slamman
....You mentioned their replacement singer at the Superrock '84 show that is archived. I was thinking of him...Ray? I forget to, he wasn't very good, but he was passable. I didn't have a real problem with MSG's singer who had a falling out with Michael. Again, he's always plagued by not getting along with someone, kinda like me here at GTAF. Anywho, People, I read that Jeff Beck got praises in an ad for his upcoming DVD and new CD, where they claim him as the greatest living guitar hero, but with Herr Schenker...that is just INCORRECT on all counts. Jeff Beck's best playing was on Roger Water's Amused to Death, but I'll still get his DVD, mind you!!
nabo45
That guy who sung on Superrock in 84', Ray Kennedy, sucked. I mean, no offence to the man, he can hit the right notes, but his singing style sucks. Anyway, I was searching around YouTube for some MSG vids, and I found some very rare recordings of the McAuley Schenker Group from 1990. It's amazing, lol. McAuley Schenker Group - I Am Your Radio McAuley Schenker Group - Get Down To Bizness It's such a shame that MSG didnt make a live DVD with McAuley. MSG with McAuley was amazing live, and I also liked Mike's playing, while with McAuley, the best.
Slamman
Hey man, as it happens I was watching the UFO Story Too Hot To Handle on DVD again, just portions of it, but that I had on Griffin Video VHS before there was even a DVD, and then most recently found some Eddie Trunk interviews with the band on YouTube, I fu**in love it! I wish I'd get the chance to see them live WITH PETE WAY!!
nabo45
Pete Way f*cking rules, his the Schenker of Bass (if you could say it that way). Anyway, I just found some pretty cool demo traxx from the first MSG album on YouTube, featuring Billy Sheehan, who would later join David Lee Roth, on bass. Michael Schenker Group - Just A Lover (Demo) McAuley Schenker Group - Vicious The 2 first songs are very bluesy, IMO, and I really think it's a shame that not more MSG songs are that bluesy. The 2nd one is an unreleased tune from the Save Yourself album, with Robin McAuley on vocals. Michael Schenker Group - Get Up & Get Down Come on guys, there has to be more Schenker fans on here than me a Slamman, lol . Edit: I just read through my post, and concluded that I don't make any sense right now, too tired :x I'll probably edit it tmorrow. Mister Pink
I actually got their 'best of' because of that track Attack of the Mad Axeman you posted. Watched some more videos. They're excellent. RUBBΣR░J♢HNNY (スオッ)
nabo45
That's great. MSG has really made some amazing songs, it's just a shame that they're so underappreciated. Here's another great one, it's from their 2nd album, and it's IMO one of the best songs they ever made. Michael Schenker Group (MSG) - Never Trust A Stranger
Slamman
I think it's insane, considering back in 1983, I bought one of the magazines covering UFO as they were breaking up, it was the Making Contact album and tour. Without Schenker I know, but I got into the band with Wild Willing and the Innocent as the new album, then Mechanix as well as No Place to Run. All of those BETTER be in your collection because Paul Chapman actually played with UFO and Schenker in the mid 1970s, that's why he was a shoe-in when the needed to fill Schenker's spot. The song Never Trust a Stranger they credit to keyboard/guitarist Paul Raymond, who also joined Pete Way in Waysted. Paul has said on record that he feels the 1980s UFO material is quite good, but the others weren't so sure of it. I think it stands up, not on a par, but certainly head and shoulders above other acts!!
