nah you want more RAM. 512 is suggested, but you should just go and buy about 1GB or more, since it's pretty cheap nowadays and it'll help you along the road with multitasking and such. icon14.gif

GTA VICE CITY

Minimum System Requirements:

128 MB of RAM

8 speed CD / DVD drive

915 MB of free hard disk space

(+ 635 MB if video card does NOT support DirectX Texture Compression)

32 MB video card with DirectX 9.0 compatible drivers ("GeForce" or better)

Sound Card with DirectX 9.0 compatible drivers Keyboard & Mouse

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GTA3

Minimum System Requirements:

Pentium III 450 CPU

96MB RAM

16MB Direct3D Video Card

Fully DirectX compatible Sound Card

8X CD-Rom

500MB free hard disk space

Win 98/ME/2000/XP

Direct X 8.1

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Honestly you might be able to run GTA3 with not so much trouble by turning down some services using both: SAFEXP AND GameXP

GET BOTH HERE

Safe XP will turn down some running process and services that are not actually needed in your system's environment a lot configurations will have all services running but never use or need them. This will greatly increase your system response times and overall performance. Also you can perform a few tweaks that will also do your PC some good.

First:

Remove old "Restore Points":

Make sure your system is updated with drivers, patches and such and in good working condition.

You will remove old entries and create only one point but will save you space and increase performance.

Click Start.

Click Control Panel.

Double-Click System.

Click System Restore tab

Click to add a check mark in "Turn Off System Restore On All Drives" box.

Click Apply.

When the pop up box indicates that all Restore Points will be deleted Click 'YES' to continue.

Now turn the Restore Points back on by repeating above steps by un-checking the box.

Second:

Clean your System:

On the Desktop: Double-Click the "My Computer" icon.

Right-Click "Local Disk (C:)".

Click "Properties".

Click "Disk Cleanup" and wait for report to show.

Check all boxes unless you prefer to uncheck "Compress old files". (These are useless files that are never needed again)

Click "OK"

Answer "Yes" to: "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"

When complete Click "OK"

Repeat for other hard drives, if any.

Third:

Disable Indexing Services (Hogs resources at all times)

1. Go to Start

2. Click Settings

3. Click Control Panel

4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs

5. Click the Add/Remove Window Components

6. Uncheck the Indexing services

7. Click Next

Use this for searching instead:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/...h/getitnow.mspx

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We'll that's about all I can come up with for now I also know of manually tweaking the services by going to the RUN command and typing: without the commas: 'services.msc' and setting all that you can to manual. Make sure you create a new restore point and name it whatever you like.

If you really want to make it super fast and slipstreamed you can use XPlite:

XPLite Free Trial

This gets rid of boring screensavers, fonts,MS applications, ect, ect and all the crap MS has shoved down our throats that most people nEVER use. lol.gif

Good Luck!

Damit! I had to EDIT after seeing your avatar because that's exactly how I looked the other night when I got wasted.....GIN is a hell of a drink.....almost crapped on myself...Please! donot drink over the limit. ph34r.gif

Why even bother? If it's an "old" PC obviously you have a "new" PC so just run it on that?

Throw a small Linux distribution on there, a 750 gig harddrive, and turn it into a network file server.

leik oh em jeez!

you don't really need more ram, the PC is about balanced exept for the processor, get one that is at least like 1.3Ghz, then try to get a 512mb ram upgrade. Depending on the resolution of your monitor, you will probably need to upgrade your graphics card to play SA lag free at reasonable settings. I would recommend a somewhat new 256mb GFX card, you can probaby get a used one on ebay for under $40.

GTAVC will not run properly with that CPU's clock speed, it will crawl seriously. That Graphics's card is fine for GTA3.

The graphics card he already has is better than an Mx440-460 which can run SA at least at low settings if his CPU would be higher.

Maybe we can determine what options you might have.

its a old gtaway essential.

also i ran GTA VC with no tweeks to the os and got about 25 fps at max and 5 at low (evey thing on low). I wold love to overclock this thing for fun but i really dont know how. confused.gif

also it says it was made 4 win 98. should i put win 98 on it?

I ran SA on medium settings lag free for a year with HALF of the REQUIRED VRAM. It was because, I had plenty of RAM, and an (at that time) awesome processor.

I'm saying if you get a 1.8Ghz Processor, a reasonably new 256mb graphics card (Here's one that's $20 adter mail in rebate.)

and a 512mb RAM upgrade, he would be able to play SA at 1280x1024, without AA.

Jackmackg: If you would like to install 98, I say go for it it will run a lot faster since the hardware will take full advantage of that OS thus less stress on your system and you'll have all the memory and Hard Drive space left for gaming. But I would suggest downloading all the drivers, updates you can find or need for 98 before you format and install. windows 98 (1st ED.) can be troublesome at times during the setup process. Be prepare to have a startup disk so you can format the drive and convert the disk to fat32 so windows 98 can run properly. Because XP will not allow you to install an earlier version of windows on top of it, so a format will be necessary besides it's a lot tidy and convenient.

Just In case

Windows 98(1st ED) doesn't have the format command on it's startup disk so you'll need either (SE version or ME) Anyways here's one:

Win98SE Startup Disk

Good Luck!

Ahh, but GTA3 actually runs slower than VC on slower systems due to the wat it's loaded.

You should have asked me! I missed your Q, however, I was intending to get my Dell D800 to run GTA 3 and Vice City, however it was stolen and the only internal graphics was a Go5200 at 32MB, however, Radeon ATI and nVidia are offered for that same Dell!

I plan on building one to my spec, and I got a base this past week to start from.

I would say, chuck any Pentium 3 under 500Mhz, because you can get Pentium 2s that run at 450Mhz, and the Slot 1 packages can adapt to Socket 370 CPUs with what I mentioned before, a SlotKit.

Anyway, I was under the impression a Slotkit could make a Pentium or Celeron Tualatin run, and that's not true. The shrunken core of the new-tech Tualatin CPU only works in a small handful of mobos and the pricing and bidding is very active on these today! I tried and finally got one with a case, and the whole shebang! Cost me $30 to $40 with shipping. With this part, I am saying a native P2 runs up to 450Mhz and Pentium 3s often start at 533 IIRC, and move up, so you want to confirm that the mobo from Gateway supports Coppermine, and perhaps, Tualatin, but being Gateway, that's highly doubtful

On those "FOOLS" telling you 1 to 3 GB of RAM and you're fine, BEWARE, old boards put a serious cap on memory expansions, like the Compaq Presario SFF I mentioned here I think, some time back, memory expands, as it says (front panel spec sticker), to only 256MB, and I had 64MB in most of my machines. As far as system and graphics card ram, both, 128 to 512MB is the range you can play around in, or slightly higher with all 256MB cards, I doubt even mobos with 4 slots dating 8 years to 10 years back will allow upto a full GB of RAM! Although I never run most of my machines at that spec anyway

Fozzy Fozborne

My old computer would BARELY run GTA3 at lowest settings and vice city was the same way. Even on a fresh OS install and all the latest drivers. Unless there was something wrong with my PC, then I'd say definitely not on your computer.

1.6Ghz P4

768MB PC133 RAM

Nvidia Geforce 6200 128MB (non-Turbocache)

120gb hard drive

450 watt power supply

I'll be first to admit there is slow graphics at a crawl, and one needs to adjust a few things, but that is true PC hot rodding if you can muster something akin to what the PS2 can do with the same game.

Keep in mind, I think comparatively, the xBox was said to be 750Mhz in speed?

I started with 700Mhz and the PC I just claimed (in the trash, but rescued!) is a 733 Pentium 3 and I put a PC133 256MB card in that.

As I type, I am installing Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven's Shield and GTA3 on it. I just wiped the drive and put a fresh copy of XP Home. There is no anti-Malware software, and the XP Firewall is on as well as Update service, but all the services run in the OS background can be turned off, as well as the GUI tuned down so it boots fast and gets to an app with aplumb... no waited slow down...at least as can be had with all the services set at default.

@Fozzy, your P4 is an entry P4 speed (I mean, P4s at 1.4 clocks, in particular, but close), the Tualatin before it was much better, those were the worst Pentium 4s of the line. You might want to just upgrade that CPU. I have a nVidia 6200 card as you do, bought as the last eBay purchase (I got another ATI Radeon 9200 locally) with GDDR2 spec RAM at 256MB, which was the biggest factor in getting it. You could just look at vid Ram increase along with CPU. My 9200 ATIs are all 128MB vid Ram as well.
