There Is Nothing Wrong With Eating Meat...

Recommended Posts

I've just done a Biology exam so have been studying this sh*t for ages. I'm glad it is proving useful.

It might have proved useful in a real debate - intellectual one where data is debated. here however if it's not nine parts ideology and one part data, people don't even listen.

Omnia sunt Communia

I'm a strict vegan and animal rights activist. I don't eat meat or any animal by-products. There are multiple reasons for this, some which tie into my love for animals, some that correspond with my health and others which have to do with my politics. I do not eat animal products on animal rights grounds because I believe that all animals (human or non-human) have the right to life without pain or suffering, I do not believe that there is a humane way of rearing livestock (especially to feed such a large number of meat eaters) because it all, eventually, results in death.

I do not eat animal products on health grounds because I believe that it is healthier for me. I've done the research and I've lived the lifestyle. Since turning vegan I've lost weight, stopped being ill as often and feel over all better in myself.

I do not eat animal products on political grounds because I do not agree with the massive capitalist consumer enterprises that are built around animal farming. Factory farms and organic farms both play part in the active oppression known as capitalism.

That said, I do not agree with vegan's rapid consumption of soya products as they can be just as harmful for the enviroment as meat farming.

You talk about not eating this and that for various reasons, but I would bet dollars to donuts that you use animal products. Or am I way off the mark here?

Ed: I should have been more clear with that assertion. What I was asking is whether or not your wore any leather or suede, or used a pillow stuffed with chicken feathers (et al). This would be a conscious decision to use products that involve the death of an animal.

However, what most vegans don't realise is that it is basically impossible to truly be vegan. This is because animal by-products are in almost everything we touch. Plastics used in computers (among other things), car tyres, soaps, crayons, candles and a multitude of other products contain stearic acid, which is a fatty acid that comes from animals. Animals had to die in order for these products to be made.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stearic_acid

Now, I don't know how you feel about shellfish, but the shells of sea creatures are commonly all crushed up in cement. So, you'd better hope that there's no concrete in your house. All those poor little suckers, crushed up for peoples' flooring and driveways...

Do you chew gum? Well, not anymore. Chewing gum contains capric acid, another saturated fatty acid that some poor cow was killed for, just so people could have fresh breath and a smile that doesn't quit.

Speaking of fresh breath... use toothpaste or mouthwash? *sharp inhalation of breath*... sorry, man. Contains glycerol. Better start shopping around for some vegan-friendly oral hygeine products.

Unless someone is willing to give up everything that contains an animal by-product, then I really can't see the point. Eating an animal is no worse than walking on one, driving on one, or using one to light your home during a blackout. The application of an animal by-product doesn't alter the fact that animals are still dying for your benefit. So, you may as well suck it up and have a steak, unless you really are doing it for health reasons. This 'political' nonsense is just hypocritical.

I make a consious decision to not use animal products wherever possible. Like you said, animal products are used it lots of places where it would be almost impossible to avoid them (apart from buying vegan toothpaste which is what I do). I'm not going to go out of my way to make my life uncomfortable to avoid the obvious misuse of animal products - because otherwise I wouldn't be able to do almost anything - I'll do whatever I can in my power to avoid them (which, yes, includes not wearing any leather or suede).

However, I do campaign against these abuses as an animal rights activist, so it may seem hypocritical but at least I'm trying to change the state of things. Plastics and cement are two big ones - agreed - but I'd much rather not see the two of them not used altogether due to their damaging effect on the environment and dependence on oil to produce.

Well, I have to say you're a lot more dedicated than most 'vegans' I know. More power to you. Now, as long as you're not affiliated with PETA we're fine.

I like animals, but we humans are carnivores, and we naturally have to eat meat. Unless you can convince a lion or bear not to eat meat, you can't really make a legit argument.

Sorry, but we're OMNIVORES. I dare you to have a healthy diet on just meat alone. And while I eat meats, and lots of it, we don't have to eat meat. Lots of people live perfectly healthy lives without meat.

This is about humans, not bears, and humans CAN choose to not eat meat, and many humans do choose to not eat meat. I don't know about bear physiology at all, but they lack the mental capabilities to choose to not eat meat for moral and health reasons.

To me, its not about the ability of one not to eat meat, but the way God made us, which is to eat veggies and meat.

We CAN eat both plants and meat, BUT we can do perfectly well without the meat, as the vegetarian and vegan members of this board show perfectly well. Even though I'm an agnostic and I tend to hate religious arguments: if God made our bodies so we could be herbivores AND omnivores, shouldn't we have the right to make that choice ourselves?

Doesn't really much sense to me, but I respect. I eat as much meat as I can get.

I believe in evolution yeah, but I think God had something to do with that.

I eat meat all the time. I tend to believe it's not a real meal unless there's meat involved.

Also I'm incredibly fussy and don't eat much in the way of fruit and vegetables.

If I had to live on a vegetarian's diet, I'd probably die.

This, get thrown in the wild and it would be difficult to nearly impossible.

Being Omnivores is a good thing, we don't just limit ourselves to 1 food type if we were stuck out there.

So here is a question, will you herbivores stay herbivore if sh*t were to hit the fan?

To me, its not about the ability of one not to eat meat, but the way God made us, which is to eat veggies and meat.

The absurdity of your statement is far-reaching. If you belong to a religious group (which, as an open-minded individual I have no grieveance against), then the presumption that humans were conceived by a deity, namely, god, is completely sound, just and fair. HOWEVER, suggesting that our conception resulted in a race of beings able only to eat meat is pure nonsense. You see, during our evolution and then during the lives of the ancestors, which were, as Homo Sapiens, anatomically the same as the modern humans of today, meat acted as an available source of essential protein and, ultimately, sustenance, allowing our ancestors survival. However, you must realise that humans also required, and, still require, the consumption of fruit and vegetables by which one acquires certain vitamins and whatnot imperative to correct bodily function. Therefore, we cannot be described as carnivores, instead, as Goose has stated, we are omnivores, able to eat both.

However, please do not misconstrue this. Today, as humans, we live sentient lives with direction far beyond survival. Now, animals need not die for our sustenance as we can manufacture vegetarian products

which provide the same essential proteins with minimal pain afflicted to animals. Jacky exemplifies this well, vegans can lead healthy lifestyles in our modern world as we are able to produce food which

is healthy whilst not deriving from a source which involves the slaughter of animals.

Despite this argument, I am not vegetarian, mainly because I enjoy meat and my philosophy is similar to that of Makeshyft's, we live in a society in which good-quality meat products from free-range and organic sources are available as a choice, I for one enjoy eating them but will not condemn anyone for deciding otherwise.

Not naturally. But yes.

In today's society, we can do well without meat.

However, in different situations, yes, we do need meat.
