CrazeLaze
Shouldn't this be moved to Tech and PC chat? Anyway, The only thing Usenet is used for nowadays is downloading things. Am I allowed to post this link? - http://torrentfreak.com/how-to-use-usenet-a-beginners-guide/ Edited August 11, 2008 by Goldey

Saggy
Anyway, The only thing Usenet is used for nowadays is downloading things. That's like saying the World Wide Web is only used for porn. Sure it has some validity, but it's not entirely true. QUOTE (K^2) ...not only is it legal for you to go around with a concealed penis, it requires absolutely no registration! CrazeLaze
When you get to number 4 in that tutorial, here is a list of free news servers you get with your ISP. http://www.usenettools.net/ISP.htm If your ISP doesn't have a news server, you will probably have to pay for a subscription... Slamman
I pretty much started in Usenet! My humble PC beginnings. I used a link from an HTML page and someone wondered how the hell I managed that without a direct Newsreader....well, I was on AOL since day one and still am, so it seems tied to IE I guess. Anyway, I have seen the various Usenet listings and there is FAR FAR more SPAM then PORN!!! Fact is, if there is a subject of interest, you can find a newsgroup discussing it, and it's only text based, which is why it's not all that popular any more. I moved away for moderated discussion as well as graphics and sound, etc. Newgroups are much like non HTML emails, if you signed up for a Googlegroup, etc. I get them still for one on Sony's MiniDisc tech. Should say, Email newsletters are different then Usenet because it's not found in your emails like those, and people can email you from the newgroups. There are ways about hiding links and many people would mess about with others while I was there. I just tried an old bookmark I had made for the one on Laserdiscs, where I frequented. It brought up some AOL Help page then crashed so I am not sure why that happened. I'll see if I can figure a way to put a link on a forum, though I think it only works going out from AOL's ISP, or did. Alt.video.laserdisc, alt.video.vcr, alt.video.dvd.....etc, etc. In fact, alt.guitar is a great way to get help on playing and TABS! I noted the former integrated AOL newsreader appears defunct, as the links above didn't pan out... I get "Document Deleted" page from AOL. Slamman
BUMP, just to say, I was looking at two versions of Outlook Express, both dating to last year 2007, and that's version 6, offering a link to MS's Newgroup forums, and I tried that on this computer, I got a message saying I was not supposed to be here and that's it. I guess it's a "dead Letter Office" now. Anywho, here's a service that appears free and is RSS ready as well. Newsreaders should support both, I gather. Newgroups and RSS, Really Simple Syndication is what that stands for, and it is often easiest on portable devices like the PSP where support is added in the firmware. -B Link->>http://www.wizzrss.com/<<-LINK Edited August 17, 2008 by Slamman
ghost of delete key
It's basically just a mailinglist. Imagine a forum like this one, but distributed via mail. Leave it to the Great Misinformer. Apparently you've only ever surfed web-based usenet. Just so the uninformed aren't misinformed, Usenet (sometimes called newsnet) is a kind of internet protocol (NNTP - News Net Transfer Protocol), just like the web (HTTP - HyperText Transfer Protocol) Usenet has addresses like the web, but are heirarchically structured like: alt.arts.poetry.urban or alt.fan.tom-servo Each node is not a website, but instead, a newsgroup. NNTP has it's own type of browser called a News Reader. Works basically like a webbrowser. A newsgroup is otherwise structured just like these Forums, (or I should say the other way around!) each one being a listing of articles, which are the roots of response threads. But unlike the forums where each article occupies a single linear thread, a usenet article may expand into many branched threads of sub-discussion. It may look something like the tree view in your Windows Explorer! Really, only web-based newsreaders (websites which feed NNTP posts via HTTP) send you an email for subscribed posts. Because its' the fuggin web! A real NNTP newsreader has all these utilities built in... because it's fuggin Usenet! The alt.binaries. heirarchy is the official node for binary file transfer (as you can attach files to posts in usenet), and is probably the most lively branch. Many newsgroups are strictly pirate, but a great many are for legitimate sharing. And yes, you can find porn too. Big Surprise. Usenet is huge, and depending on your server's output (or your hacking abilities ) you can reach half a million newsgroups... of every specific topic you can imagine. BTW, it's very easy to create a new newsgroup, however it's nearly impossible to get servers to carry it as a legitimate node. I pretty much stay away from the 'net these days. I try to avoid triggers, as I'm a recovering Usenet Junkie. Anyway, (sorrynolinkslookthemupingoooooogle) use either Ozium or Forte Agent (preferred) as your reader, and get your access from TitanNews... the world's most secure anonymous servers. You don't want any "hackers" monitoring your "traffic" now, do "we"?
