@SkapeGote: How can you say that? Metal Gear Solid, (Which used to be called Metal Gear back then) debuted in 1987. While GTA debuted in 1998. GTA has nothing on MGS my friend. Hell, a lot of games were inspired by MGS. Like Splinter Cell. Sure the games have long cut scenes, but if you followed the games from the beginning. I'm sure you'd be dieing for more. MGS4 had long cut scenes but had a lot of gameplay as well to back it up. Such as the REX and RAY epic battle fight. Vamp, all of Beauty and the Beast, and Liquid. Nonetheless, Snake is a legend, Niko is just another ordinary video game character. Sort of like all the GTA games had.

 

But, this isn't even about that. It's about someone "knowing" why some people find GTA IV boring.

So, you think the game would be less boring if it was like Scarface where Niko would refuse to shoot any innocents if you point a gun at them, and his car magically never kills them?

... The whole point of this thread is wanting the character to change, not the game. In every GTA the character needs a certain mentality, Vic vance and Niko lack it, the story was so boring.. it doesnt feel like a GTA story.. the first times I played III, vice and san andreas just felt so much better than when I played GTA IV. Even if Niko was par with other GTA characters the story is still boring.. I keep saying this but GTA IV would have worked if it werent GTA.

I do agree that yeah Niko is pretty dull to be honest, he didn't really have that "Flare" to him, he was just a miserable man from East Europe coming down to Liberty City to get more miserable, theres barely a happy point throughout the whole game with him, it just felt like it just got worser and worser each time you did a mission unlike the other games where there would actually get great points and then the occasional shake up.

Niko was interesting, not nearly as interesting as characters like Tommy Vercetti, but he was interesting none-the-less. He was defiantly the most realistic. I defiantly wouldn't say he were as bad as the OP said.

I found Niko to be the most believable of the GTA main characters, simply for the reason that he's numb to violence and that's all he lives for, death. War made him that way, completely ruined the human side to him. It makes the mass killing done in the game make some bit of sense. If you don't think the game is fun, then shooting lots of Russians and cops isn't your thing. It's a game about being a hired gun and wheelman. I can live with it, it's a great game.

The game is great UNTIL you finish the story and then decide there is nothing to do. Niko is NOT as funny as CJ when you're just walking around and randomly killing people.

I find Niko to be quite a likeable character and he is much more believable than past protagonists. He is even funny at times if you pay attention to the dialogue.

 

You might personally like him but don't try and state that everyone else finds him boring. I don't think that a protagonists character should completely spoil the whole game for someone.....

 

But hey! Go on multiplayer you can make your own character who you can't really relate to at all and the only things they say are the VERY LIMITED phrases when you press LB.

So, i've stopped reading on Page #2 since you all say the same thing. You're passing the ball to eachother. "Oh, CJ was better" "Oh, Niko is more "human"." Yes, Niko is more human. He flead his old country where sorrow and pain were his bestfriend. He came in Liberty City for a new life. Did anyone listen to the videos at the beginning? He went at war, he owes dept to Mr. Bulgarin, whatever his name. How can anyone smile to this? Roman?

 

In MY opinion, Niko is the most realistic of all characters. Ok, he is abit slow with movements, but he doesn't run like CJ. In SA, you could run faster than a car. In GTA IV, I need to hail a cab to steal it. In VC, Tommy....heck, I don't even remember Tommy. Niko is slow, ok. But Niko isn't Superman. I'm not trying to reason things out. I'm not trying to say Niko is better than CJ, Tommy or Claude. Each character were different.

 

Everyone is saying Niko is better because he has evolved. In GTA III, Claude wouldn't talk, I didn't knew his name =O. In VC, Tommy had this look that really fitted the game. Cj just had this voice that would fit with the vicinity he lived. He had the stlye and you could customize him; his hair, clothes, etc. Cj had "more of an edge" because you had more options on his look. Niko is like the real-world, where immigrants come into America for money & fame or simply a new life. Niko is no different.

 

So, will everyone stop? Each character were different. You can't compare, because it's evolution. You play GTA IV and then play GTA III, GTA III will be boring as making love to a dead beaver. But then again, isn't it the most boring characters that makes the most interesting ones?

GTAIV is boring cuz its no real crime in Liberty City. All the crimes happen during game missions or side missions. Free roam in GTAIV is a disaster and the peds are in the game just for show. Nothing at all happens in Liberty City unless Niko is involved. GTAIV has too much superficial sh*t for show and not enough sh*t that actual makes a game fun. Rockstar fooled people by giving them all these little details and textures such as the realism of the buildings and the water that are cool to look at but what do they really enhance? The characters make GTA, not the buildings or the water. GTA is bout the people in the city and the gang struggles of the city. You dont see none of that sh*t in IV, everybody just walks around happy and the gangs just stand around doing nothing. I remember Liberty City back in the day when it was dangerous to ride the trains, I remember when the Triads used to run up on me at Portland Station, or when the Colombians used chase me up in Shoreside, I remember having to protect my neck everytime I went to Kurowski Station. I remember back in the day when the projects were wild, whe the Diablos were running around Hepburn Heights cracking peoples' heads wit baseball bats and when you couldnt go to the Colombian part of Wichita Gardens. I remember all the times I used to kick it infront of Big Al's bar and getting my ass whooped by the Diablos once, I remember not being able to go to the basketball court in Newport without getting shot. Remember when you couldnt go through certain neighborhoods? That was real when Liberty City was dangerous and when Liberty City was real and tough. This redition is weak, Liberty City got soft.

I agree with DoubleOGJohnson, it was much better when the gangs played a prominent role in the game. In IV they're all too inconspicuous and you never see anybody doing anything. I was hoping to see gangsters at war, and to have to watch my back when i go into certain areas. It would make LC so much more fun

I love how he hardly talks, so much better than verbose CJ. I like how he's not happy, better than a happy character. It fits more realistically to have an unhappy person committing crimes. What you're implying is that the game shouldn't allow you to kill as many people as you want off the missions? Doesn't even fit with the theme of the game, open-endedness.
