leik oh em jeez!
Ok, so I'm trying to decide on a new graphics card(s). Right now I would really like to get three 9800gtx's, but I want single slot card, I would get water cooling for them, but after passing through two overclocked 9800gtx's, I don't think the water would still be cool enogh to do anything for the third. So does anyone know of any aftermarket coolers that will turn the 9800gtx into a single slot card?

leik oh em jeez!
I wanted single slot cards... I would like to conserve as many pci slots as possible for audio card, physics card, tv tuner. Plus, I would rather have a PC I can build slowly, with the one gtx280, I have to go and spend $500 all at once.
Edmachine
Video Cards use PCI-E, not PCI slots. Unless you get a PCI-E audio card (which I've never seen). What's a physics card?? You'd need a motherboard with tri-way SLI if you want 3 GFX cards. Oh, and each card goes into it's own slot. So they are 'single slot' cards. EDIT: @Post below: Oh... whoops Edited August 10, 2008 by Edmachine We will be the arms that lift you up We will be the hand that strike you down
Rocketkiller
A single slot 9800GTX would be terrible. Get an HD4850, faster and single slot. Also, don't get a physics card, they're just a gimmick, plus sonn you'll be able to run physx in nvidia cards. Edmachine: He's talking about how the cooler covers the slot next to it because it's so big.

leik oh em jeez!
I've allready decided to go with nvidia rather than ATI, most games run quite a bit faster on an nvidia card than on an ATI card of the same specs. (really, look it up.) For the motherboard, I'm getting an XFX 780i. And wouldn't running physx on the graphics card put more strain on it? And while we're at it, does any one have any idea WTF this asus splendid hd1 video accellerator does? I've looked it up, but no-one seems to really know what it actually does. Actually, the HD48xx series absolutely rapes nvidia's cards with AA enabled, IMO ATI is winning this series but if you're set on nvidia then go ahead. Also, I've read about many problems with nvidia's intel boards.
leik oh em jeez!
I've never read of any problems with the XFX board, I can get the EVGA 780i thirty dollars cheaper, but I read that it has problems, especially when OCing. I wounldn't want to save $30 and then kill my $1300 PC when I go to overclock it.
Rocketkiller
I don't know much about intel chipsets, but from what I've read nvidia's intel chipsets suck in general. Again I could be wrong, but personally I would stay away from them.
Fozzy Fozborne
I think the only way to get a single-slot 9800GTX would be to remove the stock heatsinks and put on an Arctic Cooling Accellero S1 on each card. I'm not sure how the cooling would be with another card blocking airflow, though.

That doesn't help, it would still be a dual slot card, the actual card would take up one slot while the heatsink takes up another slot.
Rocketkiller
You could always go watercooled, that's your only viable single slot choice for that card.

Democrab
I'd go with the HD4850, its single slot, and when you get multi card (CrossfireX and SLI) CFX really kicks SLI's butt in scaling, back in the day, two HD2900XT's were equal to two 8800GTX's because Crossfire scaled better than SLI does. Not to mention, nForce chipsets suck... But if you are going with nVidia, Get a 120.3 Radiator, some SLI waterblocks and set it up like this. Ask about it on the watercooling section Here, they know a LOT about water-cooling.
crazymodder
going for GTX 280. that can beat a 4870.
Rocketkiller
going for GTX 280. that can beat a 4870. *sigh* Could you please post something useful for once? He wants to get a 9800GTX and wants single slot coolers. The GTX 280 doesn't fulfill any of those criteria. Honestly, I would get an intel chipset mobo and an HD4850, those are single slot, and in the worst case just a bit slower than a 9800GTX. Plus your whole computer will be more stable with an intel chipset. But goes 3x 9800GTX is just stupid IMO, you're gonna have terrible scaling with the 3rd card because SLI doesn't even scale well with 2 in the first place, the 3rd card will probably give you an extra 25% over 2 cards, and that's being optimistic. You'd be much, much better off just getting an HD4870 X2 when they come out, that will only take up 1 extra slot, which you probably don't need anyway, and it'll probably be a good deal faster, and cheaper for sure. So to reiterate, single HD4870 X2 for the fastest, or multiple HD4850 for single slot.
Fozzy Fozborne
You could also go with three 9800GX2's and have a hex-SLI system and save the trouble. Just kidding, obviously that would be insane and not possible. How about the new 9800GT's? They are similar in performance to the 8800GT but some support tri-SLI and are a new manufacturing process (cooler running with lower energy consumption). And they're single slot cards. I've only seen a few that support tri-SLI, but it's worth looking into if you can find any at the stores you buy things from.

Anyways, I'll start looking into some other cards...

Fozzy Fozborne
That's the one I looked at a while ago. I thought for sure that other manufacturers had plans for similar products, though. What you could do is start out with one of those and then when/if other manufacturers release single slot tri-sli designs you could buy those. This would leave you 2 expansion ports. I still don't see why you are focused on tri-sli, though. It's seriously a waste of money. The third card really isn't used to its potential and I know that as soon as you finally get that third card in the computer NVidia or ATI will roll out a new card that will completely decimate it and you'll be kicking yourself. If you want the highest performance right now, look at the 280 GTX. If you want something a bit cheaper, look at the 4870 with crossfire motherboard. However, the way that NVidia has been completely overusing the G80/G92 and sister products I'd say that something completely revolutionary is on the horizon. Add in that fact that ATI has finally crept up on them and I'm almost positive (think the difference between G70/G71 and similar products in the 7XX0 series versus the G80/G92). Anyway, that's just my two cents. It's obviously up to you to make a decision.
leik oh em jeez!
I basically want the best I can get, while not spending more the than $500 on graphics, and to keep as many expansion slots open as possible.
