You could cut the bias with a knife, I read the description and the terminology is laughable. The Georgian 'Regime' pounded Ossetia with 'weapons of mass destruction', it's funny
.

If that's not a WMD, then I am King Arthur.

True that it can cause a lot of damage but a WMD is a nuclear, germ or biological weapon.

So it is not a WMD.

And you are not f*cking King Arthur. tounge.gif

Hey guys, what's the death toll for this war?

1670 Russian citizen, 80 Russian soldiers(including peacekeepers) according to the film.

True that it can cause a lot of damage but a WMD is a nuclear, germ or biological weapon.

So it is not a WMD.

Official definition of WMD includes the military equipment/machinery which can cause damage to large areas and/or cause injuries to large number of people.

My god now we're arguing about what a WMD is. Think of it this way, by your definition the United States found a lot of WMDs in Iraq. Probably thousands.

Whose "official definition" are you using?

I was using Wikipedia one, but since you probably wouldn't like it...

The legal definition of a ''Weapon of Mass Destruction'' is from Title 18 of the United States Code, Part I, Chapter 113B, Section 2332 (A) any destructive device as defined in section 921 of this title; (B) any weapon that is designed or intended to cause death or serious bodily injury through the release, dissemination, or impact of toxic or poisonous chemicals, or their precursors; © any weapon involving a disease organism; or (D) any weapon that is designed to release radiation or radioactivity at a level dangerous to human life.

If you look in the box to the right on the Wikipedia page you will clearly see that a WMD is Radiological, Biological, Chemical or Nuclear. A bunch of rockets is not a WMD.

It seems you proved my point with your definition though.

Oh, come on, read the bloody article!

The term covers several weapon types, including nuclear, biological, chemical (NBC), and radiological weapons. Additional terms used in a military context include atomic, biological, and chemical (ABC) warfare and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) warfare.

The most widely used definition of "weapons of mass destruction" is that of nuclear, biological or chemical weapons (NBC), although there is no treaty or customary international law that contains an authoritative definition.

Any explosive, incendiary, poison gas, bomb, grenade, or rocket having a propellant charge of more than four ounces [113 g], missile having an explosive or incendiary charge of more than one-quarter ounce [7 g], or mine or device similar to the above. (2) Poison gas. (3) Any weapon involving a disease organism. (4) Any weapon that is designed to release radiation at a level dangerous to human life. This definition derives from US law, 18 U.S.C. Section 2332a[16] and the referenced 18 USC 921.[17] Indictments and convictions for possession and use of WMD such as truck bombs,[18] pipe bombs,[19] shoe bombs,[20] cactus needles coated with botulin toxin,[21] etc. have been obtained under 18 USC 2332a.

This is one of the stupidest things I've been trying to prove on the Net. Let's just leave it, shall we?

TBILISI (Reuters) - Gunfire broke out on Sunday on the South Ossetian de facto border after a convoy carrying the Georgian and Polish presidents approached, forcing them to turn back, officials said.

Georgia and Russia, which fought a five-day war in August, accused each other of provocation over the incident.

"Frankly I didn't expect Russians to open fire. I thought they clearly saw that this was an official cortege, this was a high delegation," Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said, speaking in English in comments broadcast on BBC World Service radio.

"Clearly it was intended as a provocation, certainly I would never intend to put the life of the president of Poland in danger, that was none of my intention but the reality is that you know you are dealing with unpredictable people," he added.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is accompanying President Dmitry Medvedev on a trip to Latin America, shrugged off Georgian accusations.

"This is a clear provocation," he told reporters in the Peruvian capital Lima. "It is not the first time they are doing so. They are organizing the provocation and then blame the Russian side."

"Inviting the (Polish) president to Tbilisi and then taking him for a car ride to a different country -- isn't that a provocation?" he added.

Lavrov stopped short of accusing Tbilisi of setting up the shooting incident, but denied any Russian responsibility.

"There was no shooting from either the Russian or the Ossetian side," he said.

A spokeswoman for Saakashvili said that Russian troops manning a checkpoint on the de facto border opened fire when the convoy approached.

The spokeswoman was not present at the scene, just south of the town of Akhalgori. A witness traveling with Saakashvili told Reuters that uniformed men who appeared to be South Ossetians fired shots into the air when officials began getting out of their cars.

Both Russia and South Ossetia strongly denied involvement.

Shaky television pictures were inconclusive. Automatic gunfire could be heard but it was unclear where from. No one was hurt and the convoy turned back.

"We heard machine-gun volleys about 30 meters from where I was," the Polish PAP news agency quoted Polish President Lech Kaczynski as saying.

He later told a news conference: "I appeal from this spot to my friends in the European Union to draw the proper conclusions from this event before it is too late ... I do not regret that trip along that dark road."

Russia intervened in Georgia in August to repel a Georgian bid to retake breakaway South Ossetia from pro-Moscow separatists. Russian forces have pulled back from buffer zones into South Ossetian territory and a 225-strong EU mission is monitoring a fragile ceasefire

Have just watched "Olimpius Inferno". Would say I enjoyed it, if only it wasn't "worse in reality" as they said.

Would love to see it on the big screen but I am sure they won't show it in Europe angry.gif

Well...

Im giving this a bump because it seems ever more likely that a new war will brake out.

There have been reports from both sides about deliberate provocations. Georgia has been especially active on that front and has even claimed today/yesterday that their controlposts have been attacked from SO.

So, what are the odds for a new war? Anybody wanna place bets?

EDIT: Aaaand Russian forces are on hightened readiness now.

Huge Bump.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8566571.stm

Panic was sparked in Georgia after a TV station broadcast news that Russian tanks had invaded the capital and the country's president was dead.

The Imedi network report, which brought back memories of the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia, was false.

But mobile phone networks were overwhelmed with calls and many people rushed onto the streets.

Imedi said the aim had been to show how events might unfold if the president were killed. It later apologised.

The head of the holding company which owns Imedi TV, George Arveladze, said he was sorry for the distress that the TV report had caused.

'Disgusting'

For a brief moment on Saturday evening many Georgians thought history was repeating itself, the BBC's Tom Esslemont in Tbilisi says.

It is only 18 months since Russian tanks came within 45km (28 miles) of the Georgian capital, our correspondent adds.

In its news report, pro-government Imedi TV showed archive footage of the war and imagined how opposition figures might seize power after an assassination of the country's President, Mikheil Saakashvili.

Although the broadcast was introduced as a simulation of possible events, the warning was lost on many Georgians, our correspondent says.

One local news agency reported that emergency services had received an unusually high volume of calls in the ensuing minutes.

And once calm returned, the report was seen by some as a poorly disguised swipe at the Georgian opposition politicians who recently travelled to Moscow to meet Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Mr Arveladze told Reuters that the aim was to show "the real threat" of how events might unfold.

That did not stop dozens of journalists and angry Georgians who gathered outside the Imedi TV studios to protest.

One opposition politician who was there labelled the report "disgusting".

Thank you for the bumpery.

The news kinda entertained me when I heard it the other day. I was further entertained when I went to the wiki page and searched for Imedi. I was a tad confused on the details but it looks like Imedi may be owned by News Corp. Someone who can read Georgian should go to the imedi site and see if it confirms that. Not normally one to give a damn about such things as ownership but i can see why some might like to hear that.

At this point... I still want the Caucuses to become a series of independent states... but it's still not very likely. Darn the bad luck.
