Georgia attacks South Ossetia

Recommended Posts

Are georgians crazy or what? Do they know how much danger they're putting their bloody nation and its people in? Russia has a massive army (navy, land and air) and bloody nukes. What idiots!

You're the idiot. You don't even know the half of it, it seems.

Russia has been amassing it's troops at the Georgian border for about 4 months and only recently, Russia has started to move in his troops... Georgia had no other choice, but to attack.

War has changed.

Concepts of good and evil have been diluted to the extent that in such a conflict as this you can never truly tell right from wrong.

South Ossieta is not Russia.

But is it Georgia? or is it independent?

It's a breakaway region in Georgia.

Look at the map. Above.

Look at the map.

Right ... but if it is not legally/officially recognized as independent than it is still part of Georgia, no? And if it is, then it would seem that Georgia would have a right to attempt to control a "breakaway" region, no? So I don't understand what the Russian rationale is for invading Georgia ...

((WMD's?)) ... j/k

Typhus, I'm not Georgian and I have absolutely NO problem with you, but you always seem to talk in bloody religious riddles, seeking good and evil, or whatever.

Just watch CNN and get your answers.

Ossetia is a region that straddles the shared Russian Georgian border. South Ossetia is in northern Georgia and the Ossetians have been wanting independence from both nations for some time. South Ossetia declared independence during their war with Georgia and they are a de facto state, they govern themselves with a great deal of autonomy but the UN and the international community refuse to recognize them as a sovereign nation.

Russia isn't gonna do a thing because of Chechnya. It certainly benefits them to keep Georgia in turmoil but they cannot be seen openly supporting separatist groups mainly due to their situation in Chechnya.

Good and evil are not religious concepts.

They're ideas based on a shared morality, you don't have to believe in God to feel disgust at a rapist or a Nazi.

But war really has changed, assuming it was ever different to begin with. The moral lines have blurred. Georgia is taking back land stolen by Russia, Russia is defending itself, they're shooting at us, they started shooting first.

Guilt can never fully be established and so any victory is always hollow. Unless right and wrong are established from the get go a conflict has no satifactory ending.

CNN had a state dept official on about an hour ago who claimed that Russia does support and back the breakaway group - and that it is no secret that the do so.

I didn't think Russia was at war w/ Chechnya anymore - what do you mean exactly?

I mean there are still some separatists fighting in Chechnya, and Russia validating another separatist group only validates the Chechen's cause.

I'll retract my earlier statement that Russia isn't going to do anything when I see 100% proof that Russian soldiers are involved in large numbers. For a while there has been skirmishes between Russia and Georgia.

Georgia should under no circumstances join NATO. Because with thoughtless attacks like this it could spark a golbal conflict, as all the member sates of NATO are obliged to declare war on any nation which attacks one of it's member states. This seems like a relatively petty border dispute but if Georgia were to gain NATO membership or backing beyond that which it recieves from the US already then this could escalate. By all means I respect Georgia's right to fight agains the occupying Russian troops but I see nno reason why other countries should get involved.

America, although it backs the Georgian government, is unlikely to make any serious attempt to step in in such a conflict as it is almost alone in wanting Georgia in NATO and the US doesn't have the same support within Europe as it had before the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Even Britain has begun to distance herself from US foreign policy under Gordon Brown and so an American intervention in Georgia would be costly and nearly impossible.

I don't see this as the beginning of WW3 as some of you have suggested but I believe that it is events like this which in the future could spark WW3 if America continues to push for NATO membership for former Warsaw Pact nations.

The problem is Russians are using the minority excuse to send tanks and start the mess. God if S-Ossetia wanted to be rattached to Russia it would be done ages ago.

A statement just released claims over 1000 people have already been killed, both Soldiers and civilians. The Kremlin is claiming they are guarding against Georgian ethnic cleansing of Russians in S. Ossetia.

Russian tanks have already crossed the border en mass so I think it won't be the petty border dispute I thought it would be. I still don't think international military intervention is a possibility. Washington apparently just said they support Georgian territorial claims but the statement was far from warlike or even particularly disaproving. confused.gif

I've read 4 5 Russian Aircraft shot down.

Georgia is heavy on ground attack aircraft and rather light on Air Superiority fighters.

I do believe they have a rather large amounts of SAM's though.

The USA's statement was rather tepid, but they made their point. The truth is USA does not have troops to send to Georgia even if they wanted to (which they don't). I haven't heard anything regarding fighting on the ground or causalty numbers. CNN's coverage of important world events is TERRIBLE! (I'd much rather watch BBC for all international news).

It looks like these two nations will have to settle their disputes on the battlefield, and not at the Olympics, which is too bad

World War 3 anybody?

Well this looks serious but will likely fizzle out, but it could always turn into a WWI style unneccesary escalation of violence.

During the Olympics too, how odd. Georgia and Russia are competing correct?

The AP reports that the Russians have heavily bombed Georgia's airbases. And that many are dead in the streets (which isn't good). It sounds like Georgia thinks that the Ruskies are a bunch of sneaky bastards for invading their country during the Olympics and when all of their lawmakers are on recess.

If Georgia has no airpower to defend themselves I'm guessing that they're in for a real pounding, no?

Is anyone here actually in Georgia/Russia?

Just reported on NBC: Georgia to now withdraw 1000 troops from Iraq to fight at home! The coalition is falling apart!
