Russian jets targeted major oil pipeline: Georgia

Sat Aug 9, 2008 10:38am EDT

TBILISI (Reuters) - Russian fighter jets targeted the major Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline which carries oil to the West from Asia but missed, Georgia's Economic Development Minister Ekaterina Sharashidze said on Saturday.

"This clearly shows that Russia has not just targeted Georgian economic outlets but international economic outlets in Georgia," she said at a news briefing.

There have been no independent verifications of Russian jets targeting the BTC pipeline.

Ah sh*t.

I had a bad feeling about the giant oil pipeline in Georgia ever since the very first page of this topic.

Russia in there for more than just South Ossetia, it's obvious. confused.gif

I'm not feeling to confident anymore. And I am also begining to think that perhaps Russia is after more than just retribution for shelling. If the news of Finnish border patrols is true then that is worrying. In the last 24 hours the official lines of most European powers has strengthened to saying they will defend Georgia's territorial integrity.

And TFatseas, that post you linked to was interesting. Russia certainly has been flexing it's muscles recently, especially cutting off Ukranian gas supplies and Bomber sorties she flies over the North sea in a direct test of the RAF. Perhaps WW3 isn't so far away. confused.gif

The Georgian foreign ministry said the Black Sea port of Poti, the site of a major oil shipment facility, had been "devastated" by a Russian air raid.

In Gori, Russian aircraft bombed mostly military targets, where Georgian troops had been massing to support their forces engaged in South Ossetia.

The BBC's Richard Galpin in Gori heard loud explosions and saw large plumes of smoke rising into the sky; soldiers and civilians were seen running through the streets.

Injured civilians were being pulled from the buildings, which were on fire.

Russia stages raid near key oil pipeline: Georgia

TBILISI (AFP) — Russian warplanes on Saturday staged a raid near a major international oil pipeline that runs through Georgia but did not damage it, Georgia's prime minister said.

The 1,774-kilometre (1,109-mile) Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline is the world's second longest and takes oil from Azerbaijan to Western markets.

Prime Minister Lado Gurgenidze told Georgian television: "The area of the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline was bombed by Russian planes. Miraculously, the pipeline was not damaged."

The BTC has a capacity of 1.2 million barrels of oil a day but is currently shut down after an explosion in a Turkish section which has been claimed by Kurdish rebels.

Faaccckk.

So, what's Russia's plans then? To claim the oil? That would be quite hard if they completely wiped the facility out.

Because apart from hurting the global economy, Russia are not doing themselves any good at all by destoying oil plantations.

Georgia is one of the last major energy corridors into the west that either isn't controlled by Iran, or Russia. They have always hated this.

Russia could have Europe by the balls.

The Georgian parliament has approved a presidential decree declaring that the country is in a state of war for 15 days.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has denounced Russian reports of a high civilian death toll from his forces as an "egregious lie".

Mr Saakashvili said he had decided to declare that Georgia was in a state of war because it was "under a state of total [Russian] military aggression".

Georgia is withdrawing its entire contingent of 2,000 troops from Iraq to help deal with the crisis.

This has escalated very quickly and seems like it can only spiral out of control even more after there were rumors this morning of a possible cease fire shortly.

Going for the oil, doesn't that have something to do with cutting Georgia's supplies?

Its a war now after all.

Russia could have Europe by the balls.

Russia could have Eastern Europe by the balls. Britain atleast could be supplied by it's north seas oil reserves and it's massive coal reserves. It could probably keep France and the rest of Western Europe going for a few decades too.

But I agree it seems Russia is moving to secure many of the worlds oil reserves and corridors. It has it's own, it is about to com into possesion of Georgia's. It funds Iran to protect it's oil reserves and it has planted a Russian flag in the Sea bed of the Arctic Circle which scientist have recently declared to be full of oil.

However globally the West is in possesion of as much oil as Russia, the American Oil reserves in Alaska and the Southern USA. The Oil fields in Northern Canada and the Pro-western governments of the UAE and other Middle Eastern states.

And yes, Georgia Declared open War on Russia a few hours ago but Russia has demanded an immediate Ceasefire and the Withdrawal of Georgian troops from S. Ossetia.

This is just it, now it's been declared a war Russia will probably use much more force than they did two or thee days ago. We might not see it until a weeks time, but Russia will spark something much bigger with this fight.

That ceasefire is a decoy. tounge.gif

They've stopped short of declaring war - declaring a state of war allows the Georgian government certain provisions, like imposing curfews, etc.

Georgia Update

A service of the Government of Georgia

Statement of Carl Bildt, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden

Russia's justification of its offensive deeply ominous

"The Russian offensive against and in Georgia is an act of aggression that is incompatible with international law and fundamental principles of security and cooperation in Europe," says Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt in a statement on Saturday.

"We - and Russia - will have to live with the consequences of Russia's use of force for a long time to come.

"The justification given by Russia is that it is protecting Russian nationals, but the obligation to protect people - irrespective of their nationality - lies with the state in which those individuals are located. No state has a right to intervene militarily in the territory of another state simply because there are individuals there with a passport issued by that state or who are nationals of that state.

"Attempts to apply such a doctrine have plunged Europe into war in the past - and that is why it is so important that this doctrine is emphatically dismissed. The same doctrine can be equally dangerous in other situations.

"We did not accept military intervention by Milosevic's Serbia in other former Yugoslav states on the grounds of protecting Serbian passport holders. And we have reason to remember how Hitler used this very doctrine little more than half a century ago to undermine and attack substantial parts of central Europe.

"It is important now to demand an immediate end to the bombing raids, immediate withdrawal of the Russian troops that have entered Georgia and the establishment of political contacts to bring about a peaceful solution. As chair of the OSCE, Finland has a particularly important role to play."

Joint statement on Georgia-Russia War by Presidents of Poland, Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania    Print      E-mail

Georgia Update, a Service of the Government of Georgia

We, the leaders of the former captive nations from Eastern Europe and current members of the European Union and NATO– Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland – are extremely concerned about the actions of the Russian Federation against Georgia.

We strongly condemn the actions by the Russian military forces against the sovereign and independent country of Georgia.

Following the unilateral military actions of the Russian military forces, we will use all means available to us as Presidents to ensure that aggression against a small country in Europe will not be passed over in silence or with meaningless statements equating the victims with the victimizers. To this end we intend to urge our governments to take the following positions in discussions and to raise these concerns in the European Union and the North Atlantic Council:

    * Can the current Russian authorities be called adequate strategic partners of the EU;

    * Can the family of European democratic countries pursue a mutually beneficial dialogue with a country that uses heavy military armour against an independent country;

    * It is pointlessness to continue a “visa facilitation” program with a country that does not meet even the minimal requirements set by the EU and which uses visa facilitation to issue Russian Federation passports to foreigners and then abuses this EU given privilege to claim intervention rights such as "we are protecting Russian citizens" in South Ossetia.

    * The actions of the Russian Federation in Georgia should influence the talks with the Russian Federation, including negotiations on the new Partnership and Cooperation Agreement.

We underline the obvious bankruptcy of Russian “peacekeeping operations” in its immediate neighbourhood. The Russian Federation has overstepped a red-line in keeping the peace and stability in the conflict zone and in protecting Russian citizens outside its own borders.

The EU and NATO must take the initiative and stand-up against the spread of imperialist and revisionist policy in the East of Europe. New international peacekeeping forces should be created as the current setting proved to be ineffective.

We regret that not granting of the NATO’s Membership Action Plan (MAP) to Georgia was seen as a green light for agression in the region.

We believe that the EU and NATO as the key organizations for European and Transatlantic stability and security should play a leading and crucial role in securing freedom, security and prosperity of countries not only in the EU but also in the neighboring European area.

It a litmus-test for the credibility of the EU and NATO to solve the conflict in its immediate neighborhood and to prove for all EU and NATO members, aspirant countries and democratic partners that it is worth being members and partners of these organizations.

This Declaration is open for the accession by the leaders of other democratic countries.

President of the Republic of Estonia Toomas Hendrik Ilves

President of the Republic of Latvia Valdis Zatlers

President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus

President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczyński

On CNN they said Georgia was officially in a State of war.

I don't think Georgia and Russia will see eye to eye in a long time, which means the crisis will continue.
