Alexandr Solzhenitsyn

Recommended Posts

Stefan.

Russian writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who exposed Stalin's prison system in his novels and spent 20 years in exile, has died at 89, Russian media say.

The author of the Gulag Archipelago and One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich, who returned to Russia in 1994, died of either a stroke or heart failure.

The Nobel laureate had suffered from high blood pressure in recent years.

After returning to Russia, Solzhenitsyn wrote several polemics on Russian history and identity.

His son Stepan was quoted by one Russian news agency as saying his father died of heart failure, while another agency quoted literary sources as saying he had suffered a stroke.

He died in his home in the Moscow area, where he had lived with his wife Natalya, at 2345 local time (1945 GMT), Stepan told Itar-Tass.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sent his condolences to the writer's family, a Kremlin spokesperson said.

Solzhenitsyn served as a Soviet artillery officer in World War II and was decorated for his courage but in 1945 was denounced for criticising Stalin in a letter.

He spent the next eight years in the Soviet prison system, or Gulag, before being internally exiled to Kazakhstan, where he was successfully treated for stomach cancer.

I'm very sadened by the passing. He was a fantastic authour, a great thinker, and in my opinion would make a good politician. He's inspired my writing in a huge way, and has led me into debating, so I'd just like to say goodbye.

RIP. cryani.gif

For those that don't know about the man:

Alexandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn (11th December, 1918 – 3rd August, 2008) was a Russian novelist, dramatist and historian. Through his writings, he made the world aware of the Gulag, the Soviet labour camp system, and, for these efforts, Solzhenitsyn was both awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970 and exiled from the Soviet Union in 1974. He returned to Russia in 1994. That year, he was elected as a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in the Department of Language and Literature. He is the father of Ignat Solzhenitsyn, a well-known conductor and pianist. He died at home from a stroke or heart failure on August 3, 2008.

So, he denounced Stalin? Not smart. But he was lucky to get out of the Gulag alive, I've read about what the NKVD would do to people there.

Oh wow you just keep feeding him.

I'm not familiar with this person so I don't actually have anything to input towards the topic.

Edit: I have to admit, that was kinda funny. Pretty sure I know what Svip's on about.

Actually, Svip has many reasons for acting like a douchebag. That's assuming it's an act. moto_whistle.gif

Must of missed the thread.

"And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?

The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward."

— Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn

RIP to real hero who spoke truth to power & paid a heavy price for it.

May he always be remembered wherever free men gather...

f*ck! At least he lived a decent 89-old life, even though he was rotting in prison most of the time. There's always the consequences when telling the bold truth. The government wants their keep their sh*t straight and citizens stupid, and he unfortunately expressed about the Stalin.

And of course if you're not known or studied on, nobody cares. Truth.

Why nobody has denouced Svip is because he's gone mad with mawd-powah (lol typo). And he's f*cking crazy.

Truth.

Hey guys, I just told a lot of truth.

I don't see Taureg and others have decided to say nobody cares, what a f*cking dick thing to say, clearly someone does.

It's a shame to see older people who have seen and experienced so much go, this man was born before the Soviet Union existed.

Finally, someone agrees with me. I'm not the only one that gets a bit angry when in a topic about a famous person dieing, someone who's meant to be a role-model to members points out a simple flaw in the form of a spelling mistake. I'm not denouncing Svip or anything, I just think he could of acted a bit more maturely. confused.gif

Stalin made some mistakes but he did help us beat the Nazi's. He was a merciless man but a strong one, people like that are needed in time of war.

Not everything's black and white and I don't believe he was evil. Bad, but not evil.

I studied "...Denisovich" in translation, and thought it was amazing. It still ranks highly in my favourite contemporary literature, and never having studied Communist Russia, it was my first insight into life in the gulags. It inspired me to learn more, and to discover Solzhenitsyn himself was involved in activism made the novel all the more real. RIP to a true hero and free thinker of modern times, and a hearty "get f*cked" to anyone who just came in here to take the opportunity for a free post. icon14.gif

@Topic: I've never heard of that guy - needless to say I neither read any of his books, so I'll conveniently take Stefan's word on him. biggrin.gif

I don't really care about him. I mean, why would I like a man who spilled tons of sh1t on my Motherland? I could have some respect to him, if he did something good rather then moan and tell tales all his life but... he did not. To hell he goes. angry.gif

Eltsin, Solzhenitsyn... Hope Gorbachyov will be the next.

89 years is not too bad... I heard, captured animals live in Zoos longer than in the woods too.

I like that fact the people in this topic that don't like Solzhenitsyn either never grew up under communism, or are too young to remember it.

Solzhenitsyn spoke the truth, like it or not. Even the old Soviet records don't dispute this. They recorded the death tolls, they recorded the atrocities, they just thought their system wasn't going to fail and the west wouldn't get their hands on it.

Russia has completely embraced the capitalist system, Moscow is the most expensive city in Europe, has the largest number of billionaires than anywhere in the world, and they don't plan to go back.

The only communist movement in Russia are a bunch of ancient Red Army Officers, government officials and their wives who are pissed off because they lost their jobs after the Red Army and government collapsed in the early nineties. There is no young communist movement in Russia, at least not in any disconcernable numbers, I find it ironic that the only large youth communist movements exist in western, free nations that have never experienced communism.

It baffles me that people support a failed economic system, centralized state government and limiting personal freedom.

Communism is a socioeconomic structure that promotes the establishment of a classless, stateless society based on common ownership of the means of production and property in general.

Yep, that's what it is SUPPOSED to be, but true communism has never occurred, and it never will. It's a failed idea.

All countrys that have ever said they were communist was a totalitarian regime where the government controlled all.

There is a big difference between what it is on paper, to what communism is in reality.

(For the record, I hate communism, true or otherwise.)

I like that fact the people in this topic that don't like Solzhenitsyn either never grew up under communism, or are too young to remember it.

I lived in communism for 4 years. I got fed, walked to a kindergarten and a lullaby sang at night. How can it be bad?

Solzhenitsyn spoke the truth, like it or not. Even the old Soviet records don't dispute this. They recorded the death tolls, they recorded the atrocities.

No they don't.

Russia has completely embraced the capitalist system, Moscow is the most expensive city in Europe, has the largest number of billionaires than anywhere in the world, and they don't plan to go back.

Heard about Yukos, TNK-BP, Mechel, Aeroflot and some other businesses? wink.gif

The only communist movement in Russia are a bunch of ancient Red Army Officers, government officials and their wives who are pissed off because they lost their jobs after the Red Army and government collapsed in the early nineties.

There are plenty of young supporters on communism in Russia, just watch any demostration from may Day or Victory Day. And their number grows every year. Communists always come up second in any election with 25 percent of votes. Mind you, every f*cker who was in CPSU in the late 1980 retained the power and managed to get oil refineries and car plants for couple of pennies because of that. So no, noway todays Communist Party supporters are former government officials.

There is no young communist movement in Russia, at least not in any disconcernable numbers, I find it ironic that the only large youth communist movements exist in western, free nations that have never experienced communism.

I think the problem being is that the existing CPRF has gone totally crap comparing to CRSU. They adopted many capitalist principles and comrade Zyuganov drives aroud in a black Merc. Many people, including me, turned away from CPRF because of that and stayed with the ruling United Russia party, because IMO they are more close to what Russiand believe to be communism then CPRF is.

It baffles me that people support a failed economic system, centralized state government and limiting personal freedom.

Sad, isn't it, when not everyone thinks like you.

Oh sure. You haven't contribued anything to life or society as well.

Yeah, but on another hand I keep silent about disadvantages of Russian Empire, Soviet Russia, USSR, Russian Federation, UK and Wales smile.gif

For the record, I hate communism, true or otherwise.)

What are you going to say, when I tell you that one of the most important USA allies has got socialistic government? ph34r.gif

I think complaining about the acts and details of a communistic nation is the other country's business. Same goes for the communists vice versa.

So you dislike the way they work, big deal, mind your business and get back to help your own country. Stop complaining that they're restricting freedom. Until they do something drastic, then do something.
