Lochie_old
<!--SS--><span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'><b>Short Story of the Month Competition!</b></span><!--ES--> I'm sure we all dig writing, honestly; why else would we chill here? But what I'd enjoy holding is a small competition where every month I update with a new theme that you guys must write a story involving <i>said</i> theme. (Keep in mind I'm tired so this might sound like dribble.) This month, is August! So; lets give this competition a trial and see how it runs. I'll set the theme, and anyone interested in writing will respond here and I'll add them to this months list; then they can work on their short story until the 25th where I'll gather them all (via. pm, just pm them to me.) and otherwise get A) A poll. B) Some judges. Interesting? Groovy! <b>Rules</b> I. Stories should be short. II. Run it through MS word, don't be a 'leet' speak gimp (No regulars are like this anyway.) III. Have fun. <b>August Theme!:</b> Fantasy - Write a short story involving the fantasy genre, maybe a legendary sword, a damsel in distress or a fire breathing dragon that is pissed off. <b>Length:</b> 2000 words (I'm not saying try and write too 2000 words, but thats the limit.) But I'll be pretty laced if its a tiny bit over. Happy writing! BBcode has been disabled for some reason, so when you want to read a story from now on you'll have to copy and paste the link into your browser, sorry guys. It also looks messy. <b>Finished Pieces:</b> <a href='http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=367238&hl=short+story+of+the+month' target='_blank'>The Princess Dipped in Lace - Eminence</a> <a href='http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=368585&hl=short+story+of+the+month' target='_blank'>Nightfall - Warplay3r</a> <a href='http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=368420&hl=short+story+of+the+month' target='_blank'>Tonight's Prey... - The Unvirginiser</a> <a href='http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=368601' target='_blank'>All Is Darkness - Struff Bunstridge</a> <a href='http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=368155' target='_blank'>Wanted Assailant - Lethal Skin</a> <a href='http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=365974&st=0entry1058463026' target=_'blank'>Ronmar the Only - Burn</a> ~Phusion Edited August 23, 2008 by ~PhusioN~
Cubanwhip
Fantasy, lame. I'll try it though. Usually my best works are ones where I base it around a prompt of sorts or topic. Naked, dancing, fire-breathing dragons FTW! Also, how will people judge them if you have them all? Will you re-post them or something?
The Unvirginiser
Ooo Fantasy! Got to get the creative jucies flowing for this one! Sweet idea! Edited August 4, 2008 by The Unvirginiser

Vercetti21
Great idea, I'm loving the new ideas springing up around here. I may decide to participate, I may not. I've been playing Fable lately so I'm itchin' to do a fantasy story, but if I don't get around to it I'll just be a judge. I'll let you know when I decide something. Carbine23
I'm in. I'll try to do a fantasy story possibly tonight because I'm not doing anything exciting.
mark-2007
Good idea, I'll definitely join in, it should give my writing a bit of direction. Maybe later though, fantasy isn't my thang.
Lochie_old
Sweet response dudes. You'll pm to me (Or if you have the delights of having me on msn you can send it.) and I'll then upload them onto shorttext. I'll then make a new topic and ask a mod to add a poll. Is that easy? Wanted Assailant
Fantasty? Not my normal cup, but that's the damn point. I'll see about it. I've always wanted to create my own fictious universe with bizaree names and words and absurd creatures. I think I can bake it.
Gabriel Constantin
I hate fantasy. I really do. But I'm going to have a stab at this, only if to try and broaden my horizons and keep me active. Actually, fantasy? I might be able to work with that. This should be fun.
Ronmar The Only
I'm in...I've written several shorts lately and had an idea that fits the criteria that you have given. Lad's, good luck. I'm planning on using an unusual fantasy setting in my short, I hope no-one else decides to use a similar setting though.

Rhoda
This is actually a great idea, was weighing it up this morning when I thought about themes and other variables, such as increasing/decreasing the word limit depending on the month. Maybe even letting the winner choose a theme. If WD needs an injection of fun once again, this would surely be the needle. As for my entry, it's proving a challenge to write but because I'm working with limits and guidelines I'm not tempted to waffle on like in other works. Good luck to everyone! Ronmar The Only
No, the competition isn't over till the 25 anyways. I've written one short which is what I was originally thinking about entering but I don't know...I am going to have to work on it some. I might just write a different short. Vercetti21
Haven't been here in a few days either due to my sh*tty internet connection lately. @Phusion: Are you going to post the winner's piece up here for everyone to see?
Lochie_old
In no way could I judge this myself, I think the plan of action is I'll post a new topic with a link to all the stories which I'll upload to shorttext. Everyone can read the stories and vote for their favourite. Of course some people may be douches and vote for themselves, but I'm pretty sure everyone in WD isn't an asshole like that. Eminence
Of course some people may be douches and vote for themselves, but I'm pretty sure everyone in WD isn't an asshole like that. Yes, they are. It's not a good enough system, and what's more, why upload the pieces externally? A better idea would be to compile them within the forum, and have people state their votes, which can then be tallied up - all in one topic for the competition. So, the pieces would all be posted, with people then replying to the topic with their vote - this way, nobody can vote for themselves, so everything works out. Maybe there could just be a poll, and after everyone votes, they have to post in the topic saying who they voted for and what the vote count for that person is now, and what the total vote count is. This can then show the before and after results and shows who has voted for who, and you can't vote for yourself.
Eminence
What's the point in making a poll? It just complicates matters, because if something doesn't add up, then what? It's pretty simple - just make a topic where everybody posts their choice and the results are calculated manually.
Ronmar The Only
E's idea is good, a smarter way to make sure people do not just vote for their own story. I'd say the voters also need to give a reason for their vote, but people probably would not give a good reason...at least some. How's everyone's stories coming together? Haven't even started. Many days away from the 25th so I have enough time to make such of a short story. Caculated manually, is much better than a poll. Simple. And no one should vote themselves, but what about others? Should the contestants vote for the others if they want? I mean you're losing your choice but it is a good way of showing sportsmanship. mark-2007
Actually, I'll give it a go. It won't be about the Lord of the Rings kind of fantasy though, more like Blade or something like that, taking place in the real world. I've got just over 400 words at the minute, what is the ideal word count?
