Past, Present or Future?

Which timeline do you want this game to be in?

What Era(3-SA or 4) do you want it to be in?

Why?

I think it's more a matter of where, rather than when. Where they set it will ultimately decide when I want it to be set. For example, if it's set in London, then I'd either like to see it set in the present or the seventies. However, if it were set in Anywhere City I'd most defiantly want it to be set in the future.

I really want the GTA-3 (III, VC, SA, LCS, VCS) to return. And set in the early 90's or late 80's in SA (SAS).

Call me conservative but I don't think GTA in the future would be good. Lately I have been thinking that a GTA set in '97, '98 or '99 could be good. Sure LCS was set in '98 but anyway.

Damo.

I'd like it in the late seventies. Great cars, music etc.

I'd actually refuse to buy the game if it was set in the future.

It just doesn't suit the game, particularly now that it's more realistic.

I reckon a '60s GTA could work. Heaps of stuff they can work with. The political climate, musical revolutions, and plenty of crime to boot.

It wouldn't work in the future though. It just really wouldn't go.

Yes, but there wasn't much emphasis on the fact that it was in the future.

Plus, on a 3D GTA, we would be much more exposed to all sorts of adverts, signs etc. And they would all reference R*'s idea of the future. We didn't see much of that in GTA2 'cause we couldn't.

I just think it would be too big a step for R* to go into the future.

Precisely, there wasn't that much emphasis on it being in the future. But it was still in the future! What's wrong with that same sort of setting in a future GTA game?

Rockstar's adverts basically do that already. They're all fictional, what's wrong with them creating more fictional adverts to place in the future?

I want GTA: BTTF

3 periods, the 50s, the 80s and the future!

You have to admit, 3 times are better than one! biggrin.gif

I have to admit the 80s was a great time to set VC based on the fact that it was when drug smuggling and dealing really came to a head in Miami andf alot of new drugs were becoming popular. The 90s was a great time to explore SA because it was a time of racial unrest in Los Angeles. I think the present was also appropriate for IV as new york is new york, not alot changes through time there and if it was set in another time it would have been pointless as not much would have changed. I think it all depends on the city and the storyline to be followed. Certainly the 60s would be interesting in London because it was a time of political change. However, the 80s would be interesting to explore London because of the IRAs campaign and the subtle but nonetheless present political unrest surrounding the issue. It all a matter of determining a location then finding a period of time that typifies that city without going too out there (We don;t wanna be in London in the blitz).

1970s.

As far as I know the first part of Driver- PL is the only sandbox game to do the 1970s, but it wasn't very good IMO.

I hope R* do 1970s Detroit or Chicago. If it's in the future I would like it set around 2010-2015.

Past - done in 2D and 3D

Present - done in 2D and 3D

Future - done in 2D

The only thing left is the future in 2D. I'd love to see them carry the dystopic/parody setting they had in every past GTA to the future. It wont be all Futurama-esque, but rather near future - hopefully based a lot on the late-70's to early-80's feel, with street gangs based on The Warriors, Paramilitary Drug Cartels like those in the beginning of the film Predator 2 and the Colombian Cartel in GTA 3, having massive shootouts with police, and their commandoes doing raids on police stations to spring high-ranking captured members. Also evil secret societies with their spooks control organised crime and law enforcement simultanously - and maybe even carry out a military coup later on in the game. inlove.gif

It could be like the SA riots, but with rogue soldiers and rebels Vs. Law enforcement and loyal soldiers. And you have to find a way to collect protection money for a gang, or enforce their control over turfs while all that's going on! ph34r.gif

While I wouldnt mind another 80's setting, I dont know if they can top VC.

VC was done in the past and they 100% without ANY doubt tore it

up and created one of the best video games of all time. They created the ultimate nostalgic feeling.

The best option I think would be for them to do one set in the present.

A future setting generally smells of "There will be robots" type bullsh*t with laser guns and floating cars. I see no point.

I'd actually refuse to buy the game if it was set in the future.

It just doesn't suit the game, particularly now that it's more realistic.

That is supposing that they make the game all scifi-like. If they did it right, then it would be believable.

If they did it the wrong way, the game would have:

-hovercars or hovercrafts or whatever

-laser guns etc.

-robots doing jobs like waiter in restaurants

-floating billboards and other hovering objects (kinda goes with hovercrafts)

-people with rocket shoes

you get the idea

If they did it the right way (the realistic, believable way) the game would have:

-smaller, more aerodynamic, more gas efficient cars and electric cars etc.

-a lot of pollution

-solar and wind energy, and other cleaner energy sources

That's honestly all I can think of right now. I'm having trouble thinking up what the future will be like. Also I'm thinking they would set it in like 2050, as opposed to setting it in 3200 or something. Anyways, everyone can add their own ideas to the list.

Now that I think of it, I would like this type of game, but not if R* made it. I just think the humor that R* uses in GTA games just wouldn't fit in that kind of setting for some reason.

Not the whole state, but definitely Las Venturas in the '70s. Think of all of the cultural influences: disco, exploitation films, Elvis' growing legend, Jimmy Carter, the oil shortages.....definitely an awesome setting, on par with '80s Miami. And like Vice City, the plot would be based upon a film - Martin Scorcese's Casino. You play a rich casino owner who's being pushed around by the Mafia, and are forced to drive them out of the city. That's my idea for a GTA game set in the past.

For the present day, as much as I'm tempted to say London, I'd have to go with Los Santos, from a Latino perspective. As one would expect from a city ruled by pop culture, Los Angeles has changed a lot since 1992, so a remake of it would have a lot to offer. Plus, a Latino protagonist would bring a fresh perspective on the series. For the future, I'd go with a remade version of Anywhere City. Check out my GTA: Cheyenne idea on the Build Your Own GTA thread (there's a link to it in my signature) for my vision of a new Anywhere City - or, as I should say, Anywhere State. Be warned: it features a female protagonist, so not everybody will like it.

Yea, mobs pretty much ruled the streets at that time . . . would be interesting having a setting were the people around you are more violent than you are.

However, I would like to play as an Italian/Irish mob member.

Imagine, you have a cousin in the mob. You're currently low on money, and you had some rough times with other gangs, so your cousin shows you to the Godfather and he says he'll take care of you as long as you do him a couple of favors. You instanly say no, then a minute later, "ok". You start out slow, doing whatever they tell you, and your financial problem slowly goes away. One day, you're sent out to intercept a drug run. Suddenly . . .

Yea a story like that.
