Save issues with Windows Vista

Recommended Posts

Hey. I recently got a new laptop that runs on Windows Vista. A week or so ago, I installed San Andreas, which I had bought back when it first came out on PC for my Windows XP. It worked fine on that computer, but after I installed it on this one, I got an error message telling me to insert the right disc. So, I looked for a patch online and I downloaded version 1.01. It was working fine, but after I got to the first point to save, I got an error message reading ""Save failed! There was an error while saving the current game. Please check your savegame directory and try again". I investigated it a little and I found that I'm supposed to have a "GTA User Files" folder, and I don't. In fact, I found no place to put save games at all. So it appears I just don't have a save game directory. I've tried creating one and that didn't work. I've also tried reinstalling it at least 4 times and patching and everything. I've been searching for a solution for a few days now, so I figured I'd post on here. Maybe it has something to do with Windows Vista? That's my only guess.

The User Files in Vista are located at a different location than in XP. Check all the following locations:

1. C:\Users\your username\Documents\GTA San Andreas User Files

2. C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\GTA San Andreas User Files

3. C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\GTA San Andreas\data\

Also, try reinstalling the game to My Documents. It has been reported to work.

And can you tell us your Windows user account name?

Does your account have a .? If so, Try removing it. I heard this error happens a lot if your user name have a . in.

I think what gtamodder is trying to say is: Are you running the game on an administrator account? I think the game has to be on an administrator account in order to save. (correct me if i'm wrong gtamodder, but your last post didn't make much sense and I was trying to clarify as it looks like a word or two got cut off as only a period shows.)

It may be the downgrader patch causing the problem as the patch was not designed for Vista. Try deleting the patch and see if that helps. Also, on Vista the save location is different than it is on XP. Also, about the disc read error, it only happens when you try to run the game in windows 98 compatibility mode, as when I was trying to get it to work on my Vista PC, i tried 98 mode and it didn't recognize my disc even though it was in the DVD drive. So, try not using a compatibility mode or try not using 98 mode and see if that help. Hope this helps.

The period (.) is what gtamodder wanted to say. If a Windows User account name has a period (.) in it, then it becomes impossible for you to save the game. It either asks you to check the directory or shows the savefile as corrupt. In order to tackle this, you have to create a new user account without a period.

girishb, I looked in all of those places and I couldn't find it. My user name is my name, "Seth". And i'm the only user so I'm also admin. But what do you mean reinstalling it to my documents? I already tried changing "Documents" to "My Documents" and reinstalling it, but it didn't work.

And radio, what do you mean compatibility and 98? I don't know what those are.

Right-click on gta_sa.exe > Properties > Compatibility > Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 98.

Try if the above thing works.

First of all, don't triple post. Use the EDIT button.

As for your issue, right-click on gta_sa.exe and Run as Administrator. And running the game inWindows 98 compatibility mode is irrespective of the game version, so give it a try.

I don't understand what you mean when you say "install it to My Documents". Do you mean make the path of installation right into My Documents? AKA having the Rockstar Games folder in there instead of in the Program Files.

Yeah, that's what I meant.
